Villeray is a vibrant, diverse neighbourhood in Montreal that perfectly balances residential charm with a bustling food and cultural scene. Just north of Jean-Talon Market, one of the city's largest and most vibrant farmer's markets, the area offers an abundance of cozy cafés, bakeries, bars, and restaurants. Families, young professionals, and longtime residents mix seamlessly, creating a welcoming, community-driven atmosphere that I truly appreciate. The neighbourhood is dotted with leafy parks, green alleyways, and community vegetable plots, and comes alive with many street activities in the warmer months.
I moved to Villeray about 20 years ago, when it was still an unassuming but pleasant neighbourhood, tucked away from the hustle of trendier areas. Since then, I've watched it evolve into one of Montreal's coolest places to live.
With its dynamic culinary scene, green spaces, and authentic local vibe, Villeray is a must-visit for anyone looking to experience the city like a local. Below are some of my favourite spots to eat, drink, and cheer.
First, coffee!
There are plenty of choices to stay caffeinated in Villeray. Whether you're after a quick espresso or a leisurely latte, Villeray's cafés deliver plenty of charm. Grab a shot of old-school Italian energy at Café Vito or Baristello, where the coffee is strong and the banter even stronger. For cozy neighbourhood vibes, Café Larue (2 locations), Oui mais non, and Café Ferlucci are local favourites perfect for catching up or people-watching. Café Velours offers a warm, homey atmosphere with Levantine accents and comforting dishes. Meanwhile, Saison des pluies stands out for its sleek design and creative, seasonal sandwiches worth crossing the neighbourhood for. If you enjoy having coffee while being surrounded by beautiful books in a light filled space, head to Chez L'Éditeur where the coffee comes courtesy of the excellent Café 8oz.

Fresh bread and baked goods
Villeray's bakery scene blends French finesse with global flavour. At Fanfare Brunch Boulangerie, the line often spills onto the sidewalk for buttery croissants, inventive pastries, and hearty brunch plates. Boulangerie Jarry keeps things classic with crusty baguettes and no-fuss loaves that locals swear by, while Le Pain dans les Voiles masters the art of flaky viennoiseries and award-winning breads. For a gluten-free twist, Le Marquis crafts indulgent desserts and breads that rival any traditional pâtisserie. And at Lahmajoune Villeray, Levantine flatbreads emerge warm from the oven, layered with spiced meats or tangy za'atar for a delicious gustatory trip.

The Restaurants

Located on a sunny corner of De Castelnau Street, Casavant is a modern French bistro that has quickly become one of my favourite Montréal restaurants, thanks to its refined yet approachable cuisine and the warm welcome I receive every time. Signature dishes like the sausage and mash, seasonal tartlet, and beef tartare infused with smoked mackerel have already become iconic, while rotating specials highlight fresh ingredients from nearby Jean-Talon Market. The colourful interior, with Art Deco touches in the cabinetry and a beautiful ceiling fresco, creates a cozy, inviting atmosphere. With a well-deserved Bib Gourmand in the 2025 MICHELIN Guide, Casavant is a must-visit.

Claire Jacques is a go-to spot for a relaxed evening in Villeray. Run by a charming couple, she's in the kitchen while he manages service, the restaurant serves great wine, flavourful dishes, and especially exceptional desserts, reflecting her training as a pastry chef. The welcome is always warm, and the simply decorated space is filled with personal touches, like the large back table that feels like a family kitchen. Perfect for a leisurely apéro, it's no wonder Claire Jacques made Canada's 100 Best Restaurants and Air Canada's long list of Best New Restaurants in Canada.

Moccione is one of my favourite spots in Villeray for Italian cuisine. I love their handmade pasta, succulent meat dishes, and outstanding seafood specialties, the octopus is always divine. The beef tartare, drowned in parmesan, is an absolute must, and you definitely shouldn't ever skip the tiramisu. The cozy, intimate setting makes it perfect for date night or an outing with friends. To top it off, the same team also runs one of the best pizzerias in the city, just a couple of blocks away, making it a double treat for Italian food lovers.

Located just across from Jean-Talon Market, Le Petit Alep has been a neighbourhood staple since 1995, and a regular in my own repertoire. I love coming here for the bold flavours, cozy atmosphere, and attentive service. Some of my favourite dishes are the zaatar fries and chiche kabab terbialy, which never fail to hit the spot. The wine list is among the city's best, featuring rare finds alongside affordable bottles. The MICHELIN Guide and I agree that Le Petit Alep is perfect for lingering over plates of mezze with friends.

Mesón has been around for over a decade and is one of my go-to spots in Villeray for an authentic taste of Spain. I can never resist starting with their pan con tomate and perfectly layered Spanish tortilla, two dishes that feel simple but are executed with care. Their brunch is also one of the best in the neighbourhood, featuring patatas bravas drowning in a delectable garlicky sauce, cocas (traditional flatbreads) with jam and cheese, and other Spanish-inspired dishes that pair beautifully with a glass of cava. With its warm, lively atmosphere and friendly service, Mesón is a virtual trip to the sun-soaked tables of Spain.

Sip, savour, cheer and repeat
Villeray's bars offer something for every taste, from craft brews to fine wines and inventive cocktails. Huis Clos shines with signature cocktails, elevated bar fare, and a focus on seafood. La Courtepointe pairs a great selection of beer and wine with satisfying comfort food, making it a true neighbourhood favourite. Polari ranks among the city's best wine bars, perfect for sipping and savouring unique bottles. Chez Josie is a charming buvette de quartier serving hearty comfort dishes. Meanwhile, EtOH Brasserie impresses as a local craft brewery with great beers brewed on site.

Treat yourself
Whether you're craving ice cream, chocolate, or a refined pastry, Villeray's artisanal sweet shops have something to satisfy every sweet tooth. Les Givrés has been making its natural and artisanal ice cream since 2010. Crafted with local ingredients, these seasonal delights attract crowds. Avanaa stands out as a bean-to-bar chocolatier, producing ethically sourced, handcrafted chocolates that are both beautiful and delicious. Mlles Gâteaux is a charming and welcoming pâtisserie specializing in delicious, seasonal cakes and pastries, perfect for any occasion.
