When a close friend from Greece insists a local spot tastes'just like back home,' you listen. That's how I found myself at Village Grec Souvlaki, a cozy, unassuming eatery in Montréal that delivers an authentic Greek experience with every bite. From the moment I stepped inside, the warm, taverna-like vibe-complete with Mediterranean accents & the hum of lively conversation, felt inviting.
The star of the show, as promised, is the'Village Grec Gyro'. Wrapped in a soft, pillowy pita, this humble-looking masterpiece is a flavor explosion. Thinly sliced meat is seasoned with a masterful blend of spices, charred to smoky perfection, & paired with crisp tomatoes & onions that crunch like they were plucked from a garden that morning. But the real magic lies in the tzatziki -creamy, tangy, & utterly essential, it elevates the gyro from great to unforgettable. My friend wasn't exaggerating: this is the taste of Greece, no passport required.
What surprised me most was the consistency. After two return visits, each gyro arrived with the same care & quality, a rarity in the fickle world of dining. The staff, friendly & efficient, wear their pride in tradition like a badge of honor, emphasizing their commitment to time-tested methods.
While the gyro alone justifies a pilgrimage, the menu teases other classics: souvlaki skewers sizzling off the grill, Greek salads bursting with feta & olives, & lemon-roasted potatoes that I've vowed to try next time. Takeout & outdoor seating options make it a versatile spot, whether you're craving a quick lunch or lingering over dinner with friends.
In a city brimming with trendy eateries, Village Grec Souvlaki stands out by keeping it simple. No fussy garnishes, no avant-garde twists-just fresh ingredients, tradition, & a commitment to authenticity that's as rare as it is delicious. As my friend said,'This is what it tastes like back home.' & after one bite, you'll believe it too.
In a million years, I never thought I would ever post a lack luster review for one of my all time favorite spots. But unfortunately, here it is. Today I ordered 2 chicken souvlaki on pita & Greek salad. I paid almost $30 which I honestly don't care about for the nostalgia factor but my 2 pitas had one dollop of tsatsiki at the front end of the pita, two half pieces of sliced tomato on each side & the skewer of chicken. Needless to say, there was no tomato or tsatsiki in the 2nd half of my pitas. The Greek salad had only 2 olives (but a decent piece of feta) & the container provided made it so that it leaked through the bag & made it difficult to carry without it getting all over me. Last time I went the pita were much better. So my review is a combo of both visits. As it sure was disappointing this time around, I'm sorry to say.
Coming from Toronto, it's not difficult to find, amazing authentic Greek foods there. However, I think I took Montreal's Greek food scene for granted because Village Grec absolutely exceeded my expectations. It's no surprise because this restaurant is located in Montreal's Greek neighbourhood (Parc Extension). Their souvlakis are super tender especially when they're hugged in a warm, fluffy pita. But by far, their most famous dish is their village grec gyro pita which is my personal favourite. I loved how soft, & tender the meat was & with the tzatziki sauce the whole dish just melts in your mouth. Honestly, I think their souvlakis & gyros probably beats any Greek restaurants I've eaten at in Danforth, Toronto (TO's Greek town). The place can get busy, but the wait is so worth it. Village Grec truly doesn't disappoint & only elevates Montreal's food scene even more with its authentic Greek cuisine.
Long time customer but not returning. Very noticeable drop off in food quality & service. Entree & main served at the
same time. Tzatziki entrée came without the usual Kalamata olives & oregano, tasteless tzatziki, & 3 slices of burnt bread for two. Gyro pita wasn't as good or generous as it used to be.
Been going to this place for more than 10 years, always order the doner pita, the best pita in town Edit: it is now 2021 & i still go to this place for my pita fix Edit 2: moving to the usa in 2024, went to this place one last time
Lovely quiet place to go for awesome kebabs & pita Staff super friendly.
Greek food has always been a favorite of mine, I've found it more scarce in Montreal than Toronto to my dismay. This restaurant presents everything that makes me love dining at Greek restaurants- big portions for fair prices, great service & generally delicious food. I went for a Gyro platter. The pita was absolutely perfect. I asked for extra onion & got the exact % extra I was aiming for. The rice & salad were a bit plain but didn't need to be stars of the show. I prefer crushed feta for the salad. Amazing fries too. The tenure of this place speaks for itself, the walls are lined with photos of C-D List celebrities that have dined there. The old school wood theme brings comfort along with the food.
Première fois que je mange grec, super bonne adresse ! Le pita « village grec » était TROP BON 🤩🙌🏼
I travelled from Kitchener Ontario to have a donair pita. WOW! I've been travelling throughout the country & the donair I had at the Village Grec is the best in the country ( in my own opinion). Congratulations!!!!
I used to go there in the 80s. It was, by far, my favorite restaurant in mtl. If it's still the same I would love to have souvlaki in pita sent to me in vancouver bc. Hold the onions please.
Very delicious. Friendly staff. We'll definitely be back. Large Greek salad feeds four if everyone gets a pita.
