Universel Déjeuners et Grillades Montreal Restaurant: Menu, Reviews & Reserve (2026)
InternationalGrillBreakfastBurgersPastaGrilled CheeseBrunchResto-Bar
Located in the heart of downtown Montreal, this restaurant takes the classic diner and gives it a hip makeover. A modern stainless steel decor provides the perfect setting for a casual lunch or night out. From pizza to pasta, from traditional omelettes to upscale veal dishes, and from simply brochettes to an intimidating array of triple decker sandwiches, Universel Déjeuners et Grillades has something to suit any taste. An extensive wine list cements this resto's reputation as an up and coming nightspot, but the list of beers on tap reveals an establishment that takes pride in what Quebec has to offer. Despite its obvious appeal to the young adult crowd, Universel Déjeuners et Grillades also has a children's menu available for both its breakfast/lunch and dinner sets. Add in some impressive breakfast platters and the house specialty "Déjeuner Universel", and it's clear that this diner juggles its dual personality as a family friendly establishment and a chic eatery with ease.

Review Summary

Universel Déjeuners et Grillades is described in reviews as a reliable, affordable go-to for hearty breakfasts and lunches in downtown Montreal, offering large portions and a wide variety of dishes from eggs Benedict, French toast, crepes, and waffles to burgers, fish and chips, and poutine, with all-day breakfast options and indoor and patio seating. The atmosphere is casual and family-friendly, and the menu appeals to both meat eaters and vegans with generous sharing portions. Service is frequently praised for friendliness and efficiency, though there are occasional notes of slower service during busy brunch times and a few complaints about tipping and a couple of unfriendly interactions. Food quality ranges from very good to decent, with standout items including eggs Benedict, smoothies, crepes, and house-made sauces, while some reviews mention coffee quality or a noisy, crowded vibe. Overall, Universel Déjeuners et Grillades offers a generous, value-driven experience with multiple seating options and a convenient location, making it a popular choice for breakfast or lunch, especially for groups, families, or travelers seeking a substantial meal.

I would rate zero stars if I could. Vicky did not give us what we ordered & then acted entitled to a tip at the end. She was extremely rude & unprofessional, even stating that she & her coworkers made a bet on whether we would tip or not. Despite receiving incorrect items, we still tipped out of courtesy, but this behavior was greedy & unacceptable.

We came in during the brunch hour which was quite busy at the time. We ordered our food & asked for minor changes. However our food first areived very late & the changes we asked for were never implemented by them. Still the food was good we enjoyed it. When we paid for the food along with the tip added, the he server came back & started asking for more tip ad the tip we gave was not enough & it didn't work that way in the restaurant apparently. He started expanding the tip system they have which i found was way too rude. The owner needs to work on this tip asking system.

The food at this restaurant was decent, but my experience with the server was very unpleasant. She appeared to be in her 40s or 50s , greyish hair & was extremely rude when I initially forgot to tip after paying with cash. When she addressed the tip, it quickly felt like shaming rather than a polite reminder. I was willing to tip when she mentioned it because I genuinely forgot. But the way she spoke to me was inappropriate & made me uncomfortable. If the manager is reading this, please train your staff to not be petty when it comes to tips. To always be kind & communicate politely if needed. It can greatly improve customer experience. Unfortunately, due to this experience, I will not be returning.

The food was tasty & the price for it okay. The server noticed that I doesn't speak French The first time. He came back to bring me the bill & started again in French. He seemed a bit upset that I didn't understood him. I paid & then he was even more upset about the tip. Only 5 dollars!? It felt like a bit forced to tip him more so I had given him around 4 US dollars & then he smiled a bit. Location is good

My family & I had a pleasant experience at this restaurant We stumbled on this place while looking for a breakfast joint on Rue Cathrine before a campus tour. We were warmly greeted upon entry. Our server was excellent. I've never had someone ask'which language would you prefer to communicate with?' That's memorable service which warranted a huge tip at the end of our meal.

Anyway, the breakfast portions weren't huge, but just right. I ordered a western sandwich on croissant (excellent). My daughter ordered a croissant sandwich with egg, sausage & Swiss cheese (also excellent). My youngest daughter ordered plain crepes. When I tasted hers, I ordered my own single crepe as well. It was one of the best crepes I've tasted outside of what is made at home, or what Cora's serves.
I was most impressed by the bottle of maple syrup , free of charge, brought to the table to enjoy with crepes , French toast or waffles. The maple syrup was so good, i was considering sneaking the bottle into my daughter's purse (I didn't!)

We were greeted warmly by three people on the way out as well. Once again, excellent, tip-worthy service

The chef could not seem to get the omlette right even after specifying what was required - it was too dry. Getting the bill took ages as well plus I was forced to give a 15% tip.

We went there Easter Sunday for breakfast & the service was horrible. The attitude of the staff is very unprofessional. We had to ask for everything instead they suppose to provide us by default. Example with egg breakfast combo with potatoes & toast. You suppose to have SALT PEPPER KETCHUP & JAM. But no they didn't even bother. I had to ask them. The pancakes for the kids were very hard & the chocolate milk portion was very very small... my kids didn't eat their pancakes. I had to ask for the coffee refill all the time. The waiter wasn't present . I had to look for him in order to ask for anything to be served.. The best thing in the end he comes with the bill woth TIPS included. I ask him why the tip is included, he said I have no choice to pay for it & it's a law. I have to give him 15% tip. My food order was 146$ & his tip was 22$ which equals to 168$. I told him I'll never give you a rip for bad service. He was insisting that I had no choice. So I ask for the manager & the manager is telling me the same thing. Also he start giving me excuses about the service. **he quote oh sir this us our fitmrst day for the terasse *** i replied since when this is a customer problem ...also I told him your service was bad & you still oblige me to pay him tip . He said sir. You have no choice, when I was discussing with him . One of his waiter had an audacity to interfere in the matter. I don't think the person was acting as a manager was actually a manager. I never had such an unprofessional behavior & 3rd class service. Honestly the food was good & expensive. I end up giving the waiter 15$ tip because I know they have to declare 7% tips of the total sales. I will not recommend anyone to go eat at that place. I really had a bad experience & ill highly recommend to stay away ....

This place is great! They have 2 for 1 martini nights on fridays & 2 for 1 on wine & beer between 5 to 7 for the remaining days of the week! I come often with my friends & family! I had a their Grilled Salmon House Salad which was recommended to me by my waiter who really made the experience great! He was nice enough to show my daughter directions & tips concerning her acceptance at Mcgill! He even went out of his way to draw her a map of the campus so she wouldn't get lost! Cool guy! Good restaurant! The food is nothing amazing, but it is tasty & not too expensive.

Went there for dinner an hour ago, when we paid the check the waitress came back asking for more tip money. She said if we didn't give her more money she would have to pay for it out of her own pocket, we have been to many places in Montreal including this very restaurant earlier today & have never heard of anything like this. She said we would not understand how this works since we aren't from here. I gave her 5 dollars & she went away. This was very embarassing since we were with company. I hope they fire her. They need to hire people with better manners. I'm never going to this place again & will make sure that no one I know goes there either. We sat inside by the window & had 2 infants with us in case the restaurant management is reading this.
