UMAMI RAMEN & IZAKAYA is the very first fully vegan ramen restaurant in Montreal.
Thanks to the import of a Japanese machine for making noodles, the establishment makes its own homemade noodles from organic wheat, in addition to making its broths, Tsukemono, kombucha and sprouts! The restaurant offers several varieties of ramen and small classics of Japanese Bistronomy in a vegan version. Whether we think of okonomiyaki, gyozas, Agedashi tofu or even tempeh Tonkatsu, Cédric and his team are happy to present to you every day, from starter to dessert, these revisited Japanese classics... just a few exclusives straight out of our kitchens. 'Had an amazing experience here! The food was delicious from start to finish, & the service made it even better. Gabrielle & Sophia were absolutely amazing -attentive, & welcoming! We tried Gyoza, Tantanmen, Karaage, crème brûlée & everything was delicious & reasonably priced!

La bouffe est excellente. Cependant, nous avons choisi le menu dégustation & nous avons été pressées par le service beaucoup trop rapide & ce même si on a demandé d'avoir un peu plus de temps. Les plats arrivaient alors que l'on avait à peine entamé les entrées.
Première expérience dans ce resto vegan samedi dernier & c'était une surprise de taille! Premièrement, service, impeccable, ce qui de nos jours est assez rare (voire inexistant).
Comme il n'y avait plus de menu dégustation, la serveuse nous a immédiatement proposé de faire son propre menu dégustation. Enfin des gens qui prennent de l'initiative! & c'était un choix incroyable!
Au menu, sept ou huit plats tous inventifs & succulents. Mention spéciale au genre de peau de tofu frit (qui remplace le poulet) qui était une réussite totale, les épinards avec épices &… le clou: des morceaux de crinière de lion marinés, découpés & cuits placé par dessus une purée de daikon… juste wow!
Parlons finalement du prix : 90$ (incluant le pourboire) pour le menu complet avec un drink signature & un verre de blanc. On était plus que rassasiés.
C'est à essayer absolument!

We had some cocktails & share plates, which were hot or miss. One of our cocktails was tasteless & the other too bitter. Unfortunately, the service was not great. It took 40 minutes to place drink orders & this pace remained for the rest of the meal. The decor is nice & cozy though. Could have been great, but overall, not worth it for me. Maybe go for a bowl of ramen & call it a day.
We visited today after making an online reservation that specifically noted we had a child with us. Despite the heads-up, the experience was a series of frustrations.
As we were physically halfway up the stairs carrying a stroller, the staff member holding the door actually asked,'Should I keep holding the door or do you have it?' I would think it's common sense not to stop assisting someone in the middle of the stairs. Even a stranger would have the courtesy to wait until we reached level ground. Also it's not like we took forever. There were two (three?) steps... So ridiculous.
The high chair provided had a broken strap & was wobbly. Also, despite booking ahead, we were told that patio seating isn't an option for online reservations, which was never made clear during the process.
This establishment is clearly not welcoming to families. If you have a young child, I'd suggest going elsewhere.
Important detail: this was a mother's day brunch 💀

Mostly good food, although the entrees we ordered left me wanting a bit more of a punch (a little bland). As for the mains, the the truffle ramen was tasty but the broth was way too thick. It felt like I was eating mushroom soup with a ton of noodles in it. Sadly, the confit tomato'egg yolk' got lost in all the other flavours.
The atmosphere was nice. The waitress was kind. If I go again, I'd opt for a ramen that was more broth-y.
I've visited Umami Ramen & Izakaya twice now, & the food is consistently excellent. It is easily one of the best spots for vegan ramen in Montreal. The broth is rich & flavorful, & the menu is creative-the attention to detail in their plant-based options is impressive. The atmosphere is very cozy & perfect for a late-night dinner.
The Service:
We arrived at 8:50 PM without a reservation. A cancellation luckily opened up, & the server was very accommodating, getting us seated quickly & providing helpful, knowledgeable recommendations from the menu. However, the service became a bit'hands-off' once the food arrived. We had to flag someone down just to get water refills, which was a bit of a letdown compared to the great start.
The Tipping Culture:
One point of frustration was the payment terminal. The tipping options start at 15%, which feels high as a forced minimum in the current economy-especially when service isn't quite 100%. I think restaurants should offer more flexible options to keep things fair for everyone.
J'ai beaucoup aimé mon repas & les gens sur place sont sympathique. Le sol bémol est que l'endroit n'est pas adapté au grand groupe, donc lorsque vous êtes plus que quatre les seules places disponibles sont au bar. Mise à part cela, j'ai bien aimé l'expérience. :)

The tofu karage was fantastic, ramen as well. Service was fast.
The only issue was a super loud ice cream machine that would turn on every few minutes loud enough to interrupt your conversation. Everything else was great.
Second time visiting & definitely not the last! Everything is delicious! So nice to be able to order anything off the menu (even if you can't read it) & know its vegan. Staff is so friendly & welcoming.
Nous avons pris des entrées & le ramen du moment, & j'ai malheureusement trouvé le tout soit trop salé ou trop peu savoureux. J'ai aussi eu de la difficulté à digérer le ramen, ce qui a été mentionné par d'autres après avoir lu les avis ici.
De plus, on offre que 18% & plus pour le pourboire à la machine, ce que je n'ai pas apprécié.
Service adéquat (mais relativement long), belle présentation, bonne ambiance & bon cocktail.
J'ai bien voulu aimer le concept, mais je n'y retournerai pas de mon plein gré!
J'ai donné plusieurs chances à cette place mais rien à faire j'aime pas. On dirait que les plats sont faits pour être esthétiques & le goût est secondaire. Tout est soit fade soit trop salé. C'est dispendieux. C'est long. Pis forcément c'est le genre de place où le pourboire minimum est 18% sur la machine. Rendez-nous La Fabrique !
