Since 1957, St-Viateur Bagel has been a central part of the culture and daily life of Montreal. Its legendary landmark bagel shop operates 24/7 and sells over 1,000 dozen bagels a day.
St-Viateur Bagel offers a classic Montreal bagel experience with wood-fired bagels baked right in front of customers, a crisp exterior and chewy center, especially the sesame classic, and reviews praise fresh and hot bagels and quick in-and-out service. Some say the place is cash-only and takeaway focused, with lines that sometimes test patience, while others note the atmosphere can be minimal or unpretentious but the craft and aroma shine through. A few reviews mention bagels not always fresh or a bit hard, and a handful caution about the no seating policy, but most celebrate the iconic status, consistent quality, and the ability to watch the bagel making process. Many travelers say it is among the best bagels in Montreal, with others cherishing the experience enough to stock up for a long drive home or to share with family, and a note that a second store exists nearby to choose if something is not hot out of the oven. Overall, the place is seen as a must visit for wood-fired, freshly baked bagels, with devotion to the craft and a reliable, if sometimes crowded, performance.
Amazing bagels, especially fresh out of the oven! This is only a bakery, but you can purchase fixings, i.e cream cheese & smoked salmon to make your own sandwiches at home. They do have a cafe location near Mont Royal where they will make sandwiches. It's unfortunate they choose not to tell us this when we visited. Ladies at the cashier were not kind & annoyed with our questions.
The original St Viateur Bagel. No matter how many times I've been there over the years I never get tired of watching them make the bagels, pulling them out of the oven, & eating them oh so hot & fresh. & of course taking a bunch home for eating later.
Exceptional bagels! Even after traveling 600 kilometers, they remain fresh & delicious. Regret not purchasing more. The service was excellent & friendly.

These bagels are worth going out of your way for. We went twice in a weekend because we loved them so much, which says a lot as we were traveling from New York City haha. I highly recommend the rosemary/sea salt bagel - it's delicious! They also have a really cute mascot & great merchandise (I left with ~yet another~ tote bag). Bring cash (American dollars or Canadian) because they don't take credit cards.
Bagels were delicious! I wish this place, & all places, were not cash only. That makes things so difficult these days. I always buy much less when it's a cash only spot.
