If you're visiting Montreal & want a truly authentic local food experience, St-Viateur Bagel is an absolute must. This iconic spot has built a reputation that goes far beyond hype.
The moment you walk in, you're greeted by the comforting aroma of freshly baked bagels. What really sets this place apart is that the bagels are almost always warm-often straight out of the wood-fired oven. That warmth isn't just a detail; it completely transforms the experience. The outside has a slight crispness while the inside remains soft, chewy, & subtly sweet, thanks to the traditional honey-water boiling method.
Watching the bagels being made right in front of you adds to the charm. Whether you go for a classic sesame or poppy seed, or try something like cinnamon raisin, every bite tastes fresh & satisfying.
Pros:
- Consistently warm, fresh bagels straight from the oven
- Authentic Montreal-style bagels with a unique slightly sweet flavor
- Open 24/7, making it perfect for late-night cravings
- Affordable pricing for high-quality, handmade products
- A true local experience with visible traditional baking methods
Cons:
- No seating on this location, this is more of a grab-&-go spot
- Can get quite busy, especially during peak hours
- Cash-only at times
- Limited menu if you're looking for a full café-style experience
Overall, St-Viateur Bagel isn't just a place to eat-it's an experience. The combination of tradition, quality, & that signature warm bagel every time makes it unforgettable. If you're in Montreal, skipping this spot would honestly mean missing out on one of the city's most beloved culinary traditions.
Best bagels we have ever had. This place is a must visit. Take cash.
Délicieux bagel toutes chaudes par contre ils ne prennent que du cash donc s'y préparer!
Cash only! ATM on site that charges about $4 in fees. They help people really fast & the line moves fast! I got a variety of bagels & they were patient & courteous helping me out.
When we're ever in Montreal, we have to make a stop for St. Viateur Bagels! The shop sits along the 80 Avenue du Parc North bus line & is just a minute from the bus stop, making it easy to reach by public transit. It operates as a grab-&-go storefront with no seating. If you don't have cash, an ATM is located near the entrance. Our friends & family love St. Viateur Bagels & can't wait to come back again to make a large pick up when we are ever in the area!
Their bagel selection sticks to the basics & expands into a broader range, including the classic Sesame, Poppy, & Plain, alongside more varied options like All Dressed, Cinnamon & Raisin, Rosemary & Sea Salt, Whole Wheat, Blueberry, & Pumpernickel. The pricing is available per single, half dozen, or full dozen, which helps us plan quantities for take-home consumption. Their bagels are constantly made fresh, & the store can get really busy, being so popular with long lines at different times throughout the day.
The store also offers merchandise such as t-shirts, tote bags, bagel chips, oils, all-dressed seasoning, pucks, & mugs, as well as refrigerated items like spreads & dairy products. The packaging provided for bagels is a brown paper bag, but they offer plastic bags for storage afterwards. The staff suggests slicing the bagels in half before freezing to preserve freshness. Lastly, make sure to bring a bag to carry it all home!
I visited St-Viateur Bagels on New Year's Day, & despite all the history & hype, my experience was a bit underwhelming. The bagels were fresh & tasty but on the harder side rather than soft. They also lacked consistency-one side of the bagel was thin while the other was thick, which made me feel that having so many hands involved in making these bagels affected the quality. Overall, the bagels seemed uneven, & I've had better elsewhere in the city. On top of that, they only accept cash; even though there's an ATM on-site, it was still inconvenient.
There is nothing like grabbing a bag of hot bagels & devouring one 🥯on the step of the bakery. I feel sad for my friends who will receive theirs 9 hours later after the long drive home. Don't forget your cash & don't miss the portrait of Bill Shatner near the entrance. I even feel sorry for Captain Kirk💫& every expat of Montreal … too bad Mr. Scott can't fix the transporter to get him here every morning.
Delicious just a reminder they are cash only. Order what ever bagel is fresh & warm, cannot go wrong!
Cash only, zero atmosphere, not a restaurant, get great wood fired bagels & leave. Fast & efficient line up moves fast!
Long wait.
Cash only. Which is advertised no where despite multiple reviews here showing that is been a problem in the past.
Staff is rude & snobby,
& really - pretty average to be honest.
Go spend your money & wait somewhere else.
Small bagel shop with tasty bagels. Just a take away shop with no seating. Cash only but they do have an ATM. I got two bagels to try. The sesame was warm & right out of the oven & delicious. The all dressed bagel was not warm & pretty chewy. I would recommend getting a warm bagel as it was very good.
They only take cash, & I didn't have any. I tried to get cash from the ATM inside, but my card was declined. So, my group of 4 & I had to go elsewhere.
The bagels are really tasty & affordable. I did got onion, sesame & rosemary which some cream cheese (which you need to purchase extra). All of them tasted great, especially the ones being fresh out of the oven.
Please note that they only accept cash.
Interesting place. They only make bagels here. You can buy additional add ons like cream cheese, smoked salmon, etc & assemble it yourself. So judging the bagel by itself, not bad. I still prefer a New York City bagel. This place also is cash only.
i'm still thinking about it. warm. chewy. soft. a hint of sweetness. i think the everything bagel was the best bagel i have ever had. make sure you get a fresh one. & have cash.
Wish they accepted credit & debit cards. Currently only cash is accepted.
Their everything all bagel & the sesame one were to die for . Please carry cash if you are visiting St Viateur as they do not accept card.
