Schwartz's Deli est largement décrite comme une institution montréalaise, célèbre pour sa viande fumée emblématique, une ambiance de deli old school et des sandwiches généreux que beaucoup décrivent comme fondants en bouche; malgré les longues files, le service est généralement rapide et efficace et la file avance souvent rapidement, avec un comptoir à emporter juste à côté pour les pressés. Les avis saluent la tendreté et l'assaisonnement marqué de la viande, le pain de seigle traditionnel, ainsi que les accompagnements comme les cornichons, les frites et la poutine, tandis que certains notent une graisse variable de la viande ou des portions inégales et parfois un service peu constant; dans l'ensemble, l'endroit demeure un passage obligé pour les amateurs de viande et un morceau mémorable de l'histoire de Montréal, même si certains estiment que le prix et l'affluence peuvent être des inconvénients.
It's impossible to get a sense of scale of this sandwich, so I put a toonie in the shot. It's the most serious sandwich you'll ever have. Brace yourself!
There are two sides. One side is run by warm, friendly people who seem to have a deep connection to the restaurant. The other side is run by hostile 20 somethings who seem to be resentful of anyone who walks in the door. This may make it difficult for Schwartz's to pass the torch & keep the business alive. The food is very good. I didn't stand in line, but it would be worth the wait.

A gem! We opted to share the large platter (~$24) & it came with the bread shown, we could assemble our own sandwiches & apply as much mustard as our heart desired. $2.50 per pickle & I recommend slicing it up for your sandwiches. Yum! We ordered medium cut (not too fatty) The style of dining is communal, there are 6 person tables that they seat mixed groups (in our case, 3 pairs of strangers) they are full at all times & do this to run efficiently, if you come in solo I noticed you were sent to the high top to sit without much wait in the queue. Notice the plate of fries in the top right corner of the photo? That was our table mates food, so it's cozy & tight, not a place to be able to privately chat, but more so a place to strike up a simple conversation with fellow hungry table mates. One of them told us about the Cotts black cherry pop as a must try, & it was very sweet but did cut the fat of the meat. Poutine fried done just right. Would return & recommend. They have a take out storefront next door also.
Fantastic diner experience with very tasty food. The food is freshly made & very hot. The smoked meat is heavenly juicy & delicious, the coleslaw is intriguingly sweet but acidic tangy at the same time & the whole pickle is fantastic paired with the meat. It is better to have a light schedule because the line is generally long especially if you are a party of 4+ people. I went on a friday night at 20:30 & the place was packed with a 20-25 minutes long queue.

I recently visited Schwartz's Deli during a trip to Montreal, & I must say, it lived up to its legendary reputation. The moment you step inside, you're greeted by the aroma of delicious smoked meat wafting through the air. I ordered their classic smoked meat sandwich, & it was absolutely divine. The meat was perfectly tender & packed with flavor, complemented by tangy mustard & fresh rye bread. The service was friendly & efficient, adding to the overall enjoyable experience. If you're in Montreal, Schwartz's is a must-visit for any food lover craving an authentic taste of Montreal's culinary heritage.
Really amazing smoked meat sandwich, I'm not usually a fan of mustard but it complemented it really well. Definitely worth it. There was a small line to get in but it was really quick & staff is very friendly.
Best damned Montreal Smoked meat out there. Honestly, they offer thick, fresh, juicy slices to die for. They keep it simple & do it well. It's a must everytime I come to MTL!
