For those confused about this place, I'll shed some light. First, why it's popular & second the quality of the food, & why people get these quite different things mixed up. Popularity: The smoked meat sandwich is a big deal because it's a LOT of meat, which makes the price of 14.50 + tax "good, not great" in my books. This, along with the long line (which can be bypassed for takeout) & "no frills" atmosphere make it different & fun. It's an institution, it's original, it has character, & the line of tourists (notably, not many locals) draw attention & adds to the hype. There is value in hype, I respect that. But.. The meat: Usually, when good meat is slow cooked, the connective tissue softens ending in a "melt in your mouth" effect. Schwartz is not that unfortunately. They are clearly aware, as they try to compensate for the dry texture by including a bit of extra fat. It gets about half way there. The sandwich: A good sandwich is about balance. The mustard has a decent sweet tang, & the bread (seemed slightly stale) offsets the tough meat somewhat. A pickle would go a really long way though, or any kind of acidity really. My stomach is struggling hours later due to the tough lean protein... be warned! Conclusion: If you want a lot of meat that looks cool & is an experience, do it. If you just want a good, tasty & balanced sandwich & aren't impressed by the hype & the vibe...eh. There's a place on Mt Royal that is far superior, cheaper & bakes their own sandwich rolls fresh. Forget the name, but it's on the Jeanne Mance side & that line is 100% about the food. Edit: It's called Kahwa Cafe & is rightfully rated better than Schwartz. Granted it's different, but I'd wage 9/10 people would be better off going there.

Roast beef sandwich is highly recommended! My American rueben lovers should try a version of reuben sandwich with white bread instead of rye without sourkraut & thousand islands but with mustard 😋 Fries could be better.

Service can be described using only one word. Amazing!! Our waiter was very, very kind & friendly. He tried to get to know us & even was okay being in a picture with us! Moving onto the food, our smoked meat sandwiches were a must have! The bread was very soft & fluffy, while the meat was not dry & perfectly cooked! The smoked meat poutine, as well was also phenomenal! It was above average poutine with Schwartz's above average meat! However, like all other restaurants, Schwartz has its downsides. Some of the forks & cups looked dirty & unwell washed & scrubbed. However, the dirty forks & cups do not, at all make a dent in my 5 star review for this restaurant.

I realy do not understand why is this place so popular. & why the people stand outside in a line. The meal is just a meat slices put in plain bread.....🤭

Second time to try smoked meat in Montreal, maybe a bit over expectations cuz the first time was a surprise. The bread was dry & meat was a bit salty

Schwartz's is an experience, you line up to get in & often end up sharing a table as most of the tables seat 6 except for the counter. It's not a place to linger, you go in & get smoked meat the way they've been doing it for about 96 years & the only question you'll get asked about the sandwich is whether you want full fat or medium. Still it is for me, one of the best smoked meat sandwiches you can get, served on rye bread with mustard.

Had the smoked meat sandwich the meat was delish & the thickness of the meat was good too, good amount of mustard & slice of bread was a good size too, noticed though over the years they have continually shrunk the size of the sandwich & for what you get for the price now it's not even close to being worth it to get a sandwich from here, they literally give you one slice of rye bread cut in half & plop down an inch of meat on it & charge you 25 dollars, at least a few years ago they would give you 2 slices of bread for the same price

This place is overrated.... The service was excellent! But the food left much to desire. The meat melts in your mouth but it lacks flavour & it didn't taste smoky at all. The sandwiches are meh, very little effort just a bunch of meat some mustard & some white bread. We didn't wait long for a table but you are seated with strangers so it's not the most comfortable spot...

Meat is great but there are not enough sides to add to it, consider adding bread, rice, pita, something. Also the place it too small. You are forced to seat shoulder to shoulder with 2 other strangers. They should expand the restaurant to nearby locations.

I always come here every time I visit Montréal. They have the most delicious smoked meat. The service is very quick, specially during weekdays. I ordered small smoked meat with pickles. They serve it with bread in case you want to make a sandwich with it. But, even the small size platter is too much for one person. Lol I also recommend their coleslaw, as it's creamy & delicious.

Visited Montreal & friend insisted we go to Schwartz, so we did. We got an order of smoked meat Schwatz poutine & the full plate with rye bread to make your own. Both were amazing!!! The smoked meat is done to perfection 👌🏻 staff is friendly & helpful!!

It was blizzarding outside, & there was still a short line to get in. Worth it. Service is super fast though, had the sandwich within a couple minutes of ordering. The smoked brisket is amazing. Melts in your mouth, tender. Piled high on the bread, with mustard... So good. Lives up to the hype.

A gem! We opted to share the large platter (~$24) & it came with the bread shown, we could assemble our own sandwiches & apply as much mustard as our heart desired. $2.50 per pickle & I recommend slicing it up for your sandwiches. Yum! We ordered medium cut (not too fatty) The style of dining is communal, there are 6 person tables that they seat mixed groups (in our case, 3 pairs of strangers) they are full at all times & do this to run efficiently, if you come in solo I noticed you were sent to the high top to sit without much wait in the queue. Notice the plate of fries in the top right corner of the photo? That was our table mates food, so it's cozy & tight, not a place to be able to privately chat, but more so a place to strike up a simple conversation with fellow hungry table mates. One of them told us about the Cotts black cherry pop as a must try, & it was very sweet but did cut the fat of the meat. Poutine fried done just right. Would return & recommend. They have a take out storefront next door also.

I recently visited Schwartz's Deli during a trip to Montreal, & I must say, it lived up to its legendary reputation. The moment you step inside, you're greeted by the aroma of delicious smoked meat wafting through the air. I ordered their classic smoked meat sandwich, & it was absolutely divine. The meat was perfectly tender & packed with flavor, complemented by tangy mustard & fresh rye bread. The service was friendly & efficient, adding to the overall enjoyable experience. If you're in Montreal, Schwartz's is a must-visit for any food lover craving an authentic taste of Montreal's culinary heritage.

This restaurant does two things right, sort of! One: Great marketing for a really lousy, nasty restaurant. Two: Speedy service but that's because the restaurant is treated like a production line.

We arrived at 11:40 in the morning & there was no line up. Upon entering we immediately noticed that it was dirty & cramped. In fact, so cramped we were seated with strangers & required to share condiments. This is the norm & not exceptional.

The waiter who informed us there were no combos, although they are clearly on the menu, was rushed, inattentive, unhelpful & definitely lacking charm. Our order was taken almost immediately. My fries & my husband's poutine came first. About five minutes later came our smoked meat sandwiches by which time our fries were cold. The fries & poutine were both lacking seasoning. The gravy on the poutine was thick, cold & bland. The smoked meat sandwiches were incredibly dry on stale bread & very little mustard. The meat fell apart not because it was tender but because it was brittle. The best thing we had were the soft drinks & that's probably because they came in a can otherwise fountain soft drinks would probably have been a disaster as well. They were also very necessary in order to wash those dry sandwiches down our throats.

Our bill was handed to us while we were still mid-meal. We paid our $50.00 & were out by 12:00 (20 minutes total) by which point there was a line up outside.

This restaurant is severely overrated. It is not only the worst smoked meat I've ever eaten, it is the worst restaurant at which I've ever eaten period. What kind of icon & institution is that? You can literally get better smoked meat anywhere, perhaps even in a dumpster. Go anywhere else!
