The customer service was phenomenal! The food was excellent & the staff were wonderful! They were attentive, knowledgeable & friendly. They provided great recommendations from the menu & always checked-in on us. As mentioned above, the food was excellent! It had different flavours but were not overpowering each other. Would come back here again & I highly recommend this place to anyone who is going to Montreal.
⭐?⭐?⭐?⭐?⭐? Beba never disappoints.
Every time I go, I'm reminded why it's one of my favourite spots in Montreal. The service is always warm, attentive, & effortless - you really feel taken care of. The food? Absolutely incredible. Every dish is thoughtful, balanced, & packed with flavour. You can tell there's passion behind everything that comes out of the kitchen.
The ambiance is just right - lively but intimate, with that easy charm that makes you want to stay all night. Whether it's for a special occasion or just a mid-week dinner, Beba somehow makes it feel like both.
Highly recommend it to anyone who loves great food, genuine hospitality, & a place that truly gets it right.
Service is perfect. The staff is very attentive. Shoutout to the server who refilled my glass 6 times , not letting me stay dehydrated.
Food- the menu changes frequently so you need to check the website for latest menu. Some dishes are also served by piece - like the caviar with potato knish.
We ordered 4 dishes:
- mackerel on sesame rice with horse radish (our favourite. Great flavour)
- red dates with foie gras & pistachio (this was fantastic, it's on the sweeter side but it has wonderful flavours)
- morcilla with peppers (this is very similar to Korean blood sausages . Peppers were great)
- veal sweetbread (unique flavours. The little bits of meat were a bit too salty. It overpowered the natural flavours)
In this category of elevated comfort food, Beba is the place to visit. Phenomenal dishes, impeccable service. I went 2 nights in a row. The 3rd visit a few months later didn't disappoint. The originality remains with unique flavours.
During the past few years, this Montreal neighbourhood hidden gem has progressively ascended the' Top 100 Best Canadian Restaurant' ranking list. Currently, it occupies the #7 spots, just behind our Ontario-own Pearl Morissette, Alo, Edulis, 20 Victoria street…etc.
By pure luck, dining options for our relatively large party of 6, required special handling by the smallish & cozy restaurant & its compact kitchen. This resulted in our being offered a fixed price, pre-arranged'omakase' menu, consisting of communal size dishes for sharing. This menu will be specially crafted in person by Montreal celebrity chef/owner Ari Schor himself! A nice surprise & welcoming privilege!
Upon arrival, we were greeted warmly & graciously by the wait staff & the two owner brothers, Ari & Pablo. After exchanging hand shakes, hugging & verbal pleasantries, we all settled down, ordered our pre-dinner cocktails & eagerly awaited the arrival of our culinary feast.
We were presented with the following dishes:
Appetizers:
- Potato Knish with Imperial Osetra Caviar
- Montadito of Mackerel with sesame, salted butter & horseradish
- Involtini of Zucchini & Swiss Chard with yogurt & pine nuts
Mains:
- Drunken Guinea Fowl & Liver marinated in Sherry
- Tagliatelle served with Chanterelle, braised Zucchinis & Pamiagiano
Reggiano
- Gloucester Old Spot Pork chop with creamed corn & black truffles
- Rabbit with Octopus, Chorizo & Potatoes
- Wild Mushroom Paella
Desserts:
- Strawberries with Marsala Zabaglioni & Amaretti
- House made Vanilla Icecream with roasted Pistachios
Our intriguing French & South American Hispanic fusion fare, with a touch of Chinese theme thrown into the mix, was both rustic yet refined. Dishes' progression was a balanced blend of subtle flavour creations intermingled with some concoctions packed with relatively bold & complex taste profiles.
The Shanghainese scallion pancake taste-alike potato Knish topped with salty caviar was a great overture to our meal.
The Chinese drunken pigeon clone main -'Drunken Guinea Fowl with Sherry' was IMO a clever, masterful touch! The delicious meat, tender & moist…..the medium rare, velvety smooth & creamy foie, exceptional!
I am normally not a fan of rabbit, finding it usually overcooked & dry. Yet, Beba's rendition was a pleasure to eat. The well seasoned meat was nicely seared, flavourful & juicy. Same applies to the pork, which was also perfectly executed, caramelized crust on the outside & moist juicy meat inside. The pile of shaved Black truffle topping was super-generous & the sweet Chilean creamed corn sauce, delightful!
Overall, it was a satisfying & sumptuous meal with generous portions, encompassing some creative, intriguing & unfamiliar ingredient composition & flavour profile
The only downside to our meal was the rather underwhelming, blend tasting & mushy textured pasta dish plus the loud &'funky' background music, which featured African tribal like songs to crackling Caribbean percussion to mellow Hispanic. What a weird mix?!
An evening of good food, warm attentive service & great company! A near perfect total package!
As foodies who try a variety of different restaurants, Beba is our favourite of all time. My partner is Argentinian & loved every single dish we ordered, gladly pleased to recognize the flavours of his culture. Service is also incredibly welcoming, warm & authentic. We recommend this place to everyone we meet !
Wow, found a true gem, limited menu, amazingl flavours.
Service is unique & detailed.
Small place, need to reserve well ahead unless you are interested in 5pm.
Must try
The Pisco Sour was better then mine! Hard to accept.
I had the quail & appreciated the elegant & subtle flavour. The hot sauce served with the rabbit empanadas makes you speak languages you didnt know you knew. I could start a diet of bread & hot sauce, this one.
I loved the zabaglione because the sugar respects flavour & texture. Over attentive service, the bill well ballanced: Welcome to Verdun BEBA!
Everything was INSANE! Every ingredient used was thought & the quality was insane! Each dish was explained with details of the techniques used & where did the products come from. It was crazy! We had two from the classique: the KNISH ; the cured mackerel on a sesame bun I.N.S.A.N.E it was soooo good! Like each flavour was perfectly balanced & everything came through! Third was the beef tartare! CRAZY! So fresh, herby, lemon, with the perfect garlicky well toasted sourdough! With ANCHOVIES! In a really comforting way it satisfied my PIZZA CRAVING! & the last was QUEBEC LAMB two ways. The first was lamb belly sandwiched & seared with black trumpet & there was the T bone equivalent of the lamb all served with sautéed greens topped with a pine nut+raisin+capers gremlot & a red wine jus! This whole experience was amazing & I am SO GRATEFUL! It was truly a WORK OF ART!
What a little gem. The food & service were incredible & strongly recommend to anyone looking to discover new & delicious flavours. Make sure to speak with your waitress as not all items are listed on the menu.
Quick breakdown: So this has been on my bucket list for years now. I have only heard good things. For my personal taste it was not it. The best thing I had was the mackerel toast. When it come to these types of restaurants I love to rely on guidance from our waiter on ordering & whether or not our order is well-balanced & hitting on their most recommended dishes. I did not get that experience. What was ordered: Mackerel toast 10/10 - Absolutely phenomenal . Layered with buttery & bright flavours all while topped with a fresh piece of fish. No complaints amazing!! Would eat 3 of these. Clams & artichoke 6/10 Very subtle & almost bland. Did not do it for me. Some type of rillettes (not pictured) 8/10 Was very good, but at this point Was frustrated to keep on eating dishes that were paired with a piece of bread or on toast. This is where I would've appreciated more guidance to not have ordered so many toast pairings. Pork chop 7/10 Was fine. My partner loved it. I have had better. Was cooked great, but not running back for it. Very generous portion.
Had very high expectations going into this considering how it's ranked #8 on Canada's top restaurants, but the food was very disappointing. No unique flavours, everything tasted very bland. We got the mackerel, rabbit, octopus, salad, & lamb. Especially for the price of the dishes, it was a big let down. Service was great though.
Amazing meal! This place certainly deserves its national recognition. Every dish is a masterpiece with bold flavours & a level of craftsmanship that is rarely found. If you can get a table, lucky you!
First time trying it, & it was amazing! Must visit, the tasting menu, even though is pricey, its worth every penny, lots of food, great flavours, variety, freshness & great service, one of the few places in montreal where I'm happy tipping 18-20% because of how much they care & accommodate. Would be back, love it!
Came in as a walk-in. Was really just looking for a place out of the heat. The service was fantastic, each employee asked if we preferred english or french, & was very personable. The guy behind the bar was most of our interactions, & offered specials before listing them - a great touch. He was excited to share how each menu item was made & made everything sound both delicious & simplified how it so that even I could understand it. Skipped the fancy restaurant terms & just explained what the food was in clear & excited terms! He was super personable, noticed my partner's tattoo, & spoke about his own for a bit. We ordered the montadito, which is essentially 4 pieces of mackerel on two sesame seed buns, with horseradish, & the fish marinated in vinegar. Each bite was juicy & delicious, Even 25 minutes later I can still feel the flavours on my tongue. Definitely an excellent place to check out if you're in the city.
Beba ranks as the number 8 top restaurant in Canada for 2024. When entering you wonder how? It's just two young looking cooks behind the counter. While the food did not disappoint, there was much to be desired from the flow of service & the space itself. The space is actually has a ton of charm, & the outdoor patio with the fire is very cute - unless you get sat there during midge & mosquito season. Trying to have a conversation with the bugs just constantly hovering was tough, I'm glad we got moved inside. Once inside, we were sat at the bar where the bartender was pleasant, knowledgable, & always smiling. The service would be 5 stars, but the production & speed from the kitchen was atrocious. 4 dishes in 2.5 hours just left you always desiring something. Getting to the food, it was excellent, I would go as far as saying better than Vin Mon Lapin (currently the top in Canada). Starting with the mackerel toast - delicious. When it landed on the table, my guest & I both looked at each other thinking this was going to be a fish bomb of oily stinkyness - boy were we wrong. First bite, good, second bite, great, third & fourth bite left us saying "wow, I could order a few more of those, yum!". Moving to the strozapretti & rabbit ragu, absolutely killer dish, one of the better ragu dishes I've ever had. Again, we could have eaten many more. The salad was a salad, a nice break with acidity & freshness, & the guinea fowl had tons of flavour & perfectly cooked & crispy skin. Getting to the desserts, the classic flan has been a staple on their menu since they've opened & it's a very good version of this classic dish, but it did not hold a candle to the wonderful pistachio semi-freddo. The texture & taste of that dish was outstanding. If there weren't so many restaurants to visit in Canada, I'd be back here a few more times - it's excellent. If they can just speed up the service from the little kitchen, that would be great. Overall though, I can see why they are a Top 10 in 2024.
TLDR: great service, good idea but food was mostly bland, undercooked, & absurdly portioned. For context I live in NYC & am used to expensive small plate restaurants. I am genuinely confused at how this place can defend some of the dishes. Overall, the idea behind the menu is nice, but the food was very one-note, lacked seasoning, but was also very very rich & buttery. 1. The asparagus dish was $26 for exactly two stalks of asparagus & hollandaise sauce. 2. The knish was bland & the bite lacked flavour. 3. The beef ham was bland & extremely underwhelming. 4. The guinea fowl was completely undercooked, with visibly raw parts. I took it to go & cooked it in a pan the next day. The zucchini involtini & pistachio dessert were great. Also, the service was lovely. I love how they have the servers explain each dish. Maybe I came on an off night, but I can't recommend this place at all unfortunately.
It was disappointing overall. We dined here based on all the positive reviews, but last night the food was certainly far from the best. Some dishes were bland with little flavour, others had too much liquid & were drowning. The couple beside us were actually asked if they could leave because their two hour dining time slot had expired - BUT only half their orders had arrived as the kitchen was behind! WTH? They offered to pack up the rest of their dishes for takeout! Overall a disappointing experience & will not return.
The website menu indicated that there were sweetbreads & that was the dish I wanted & was looking forward to, but the menu on site did not have any. Despite my disapointment, everything else we had on the menu was delicious. The flavours & textures were fantastic. The service impeccable. Thank you!
I have nothing negative to say about my experience last night. From the moment we walked in to the moment we stepped out, the service & overall culinary experience was unparalleled. We ordered the Guinea fowl liver tagliatelle, the mackerel, the homemade coppa & the rabbit. Their seasonal menu is not for those with close-minded palates. The combination of flavours was incredible & we were treated like royalty. The cocktails were also made to perfection. Would highly recommend for those who are looking for a funky & delicious meal!
