I used to come here often. In fact, Pho Bang New York (not in New York) was the one that first taught me to appreciate this Americanized northern Vietnam dish more than three decades ago even though there were many pho places in town. The first day when I revisited Montreal recently, I brought my grown daughter to Pho Bang New York. We returned to this place several times during our short stay.
Their noodles are less bouncy than I prefer. But their meat cuts are superb, & their soup has a different emphasis from what I often get now. After all these years, they still keep their prices low, although they seem to have adjusted portions somewhat understandably due to inflation. Surprisingly, they now have a weekend special with ox tail soup. That soup has hot spices, & they offer a special hot sauce. You don't want to miss it if you visit on Friday, Saturday, or Sunday!
I still remember the weekend evenings when diners quietly - nay, loudly wait to enter near the small doorway at the plain-looking storefront. Today, people do the same. Their interior used be plain, too. But now, they have quite a bit of decors that look loud but do not necessarily go together. General atmosphere here is cozy. Staff speak fluent French & English - many speak Vietnamese, too.
Space is tight in this restaurant. So, expect some inconvenience if you visit during winter. (They now have a coat rack in the back although not many people notice that.) & prepare to pay cash. (How do you suppose they can keep price so low?)
It was my first time visiting this restaurant, & also my first time trying this kind of soup. The shrimp & vegetable soup was something new for me, & I really enjoyed the taste, it was interesting & delicious in a different way. I had a great experience overall.
It ain't what it used to be… the quality of the grilled porc was extremely disappointing today!! If you decide to eat here, ('cause it's still a Montreal institution) I suggest you go for the soup with the raw beef & the spring rolls.
So far, the best Vietnamese food I had in Montreal! Their noodle grilled chicken 🍲 soup is 👌 👍. Their grilled beef + chicken +rice is a MUST try 🤪. Give it a try 👌.
Prices are fairly well.
All in all: Quality 👍, price 👍.
This is my spot & will be in my monthly to go list!
Just keep in mind: no credit card, no debit, only Cash!
Stopped by on a road trip to Montreal, felt like a popular spot in Chinatown. The service was friendly enough, I realize they were busy for dinner.
We got the chicken & minced pork vermicelli, chicken tonkinese soup/pho, & vegetable vermicelli. The portions & prices were reasonable. The pho broth was flavourful & rich!
Will definitely be coming back!

I've been to Pho Bang NY 5 times in total & I'll say this, their Pho is off the charts. It's amazing when it's fresh. It has all the perfect blends of flavors & you get it right quick, which means it's piping hot, just the way I like it!
Now the last 3 times a went I wanted the spicy noodle soup, Bun Bo Hu, something I've always wanted to try. Every time I went, until yesterday, they ran out because it's a weekly special. So you can imagine how excited I was when he said they still had some.
Well let me tell you it was the exact opposite of what I would normally get.
They essentially gave me a HUGE BOWL OF TEPID BATHWATER. It was the most bland beef broth with oxtail & flank steak. There was barely any seasoning & no coriander. But the worst part is it's suppose to be SPICY NOODLE SOUP. There was no chili in it at all.
It virtually tasted like eating warm canned consume. I just can't see myself going back after getting served that. It was like they decided to serve me anything because they just wanted my business that day. Normally I'd consider it a one off thing & talk to the server about it but he just disappeared after serving us.
It's really sad because it was really a nice thing to look forward to every second week. I love Pho & now I have to find a new spot.
