Great dishes, the devilled brussel sprouts were amazing, so was the roast beef. There was a marriage proposal at the table right next to us, many festive occasions, mutiple birthdays. Everybody smiling & enjoying the lively vibe, A+ ps I've also been to Joe Beef & I liked McKiernan even bette
Absolutely loved our experience here. We came as a group & enjoyed the family style menu, & tried a bunch of their dishes. I loved the Brussel sprouts, the rigatoni & the chicken with gravy the most! Can't wait to go again in the future.
Not sure if we went on an off night or if Mckiernans is extremely overhyped. To start off on a good note - our waitress was very kind & did explain to us that the kitchen was a bit slow (totally fine).
I had high-ish expectations for Mckiernans from reading reviews, their instagram, & being a fan of Liverpool House. What I didn't expect was to have my first bad meal l in this city.
We ordered a few dishes (2 apps) & 3 mains to try a bit of everything. The apps ended up coming with the main meals which we didn't expect. Not a fan. Every single bite that was taken was bland & somewhat dry. It's like they completely forgot to add salt before during or after making the dishes. Overwhelming when they brought all the food at once.. underwhelming when eating. I do hope this was just a crazy Friday night & not an every weekend occurrence of meh.
When I Comme to McKiernan I feel like
Home lol the food is so good & different from other restaurants, I just love it & im so lucky I leave close by :).
One of my favorite dishes is the Jagerschnitzel, & their donuts are so deliciousss!
I really love this spot for dinner. It's got this great, bustling energy without being too loud, making it perfect for a date night. You should definitely try to make a reservation ahead of time if you can.
At first glance, the menu can look a little all over the place, but once the food starts coming out it all makes sense. The roasted chicken is absolutely fantastic, chicken is cooked perfectly & the sauce is so good. The pasta dishes are also a great option with good portion sizes.
For sides, do yourself a favor & get the deviled brussel sprouts. They are seriously delicious & awesome for sharing. You might want to skip the fries, though. They can be a little hit or miss, sometimes coming out a bit overcooked & dry.
A quick tip for dessert: if you're eyeing the donuts, ask your server to set some aside when you first order your meal. They sell out super fast!
A Few Thoughts on Brunch:
I'm probably in the minority here, but the famous brunch double down just isn't for me. I don't get the hype. The hash browns feel both dry & oily at the same time, almost like they were pre-made & then just flash-fried to order. It's not a dealbreaker, but I'd recommend trying something else instead.
As for the service, it was only a mixed bag the last time I went. The hosts at the front were incredible-super helpful & welcoming. But our waitress seemed a little checked out. We all have off days, but it was weird to see her totally happy & chill with other tables but just meh/cold with us. She did perk up when I went to pay with cash, which I found kind of strange.
Overall, I'd still highly recommend this place for a great dinner out.
Update: went back recently, food & service was top notch, 5 stars all around.
Incredible food & very fun vibes inside. We had a fixed menu & the dishes were solid all around, especially the brussel sprouts & tartare
Amazing food! Everything was delicious! THE SCAMPI PASTA is a must! It's delicious & seasoned so well, better than many italian restaurants I have been to. Only thing was the shnitzel was a littttle dry! But other than that, great service & food! Would come again to try the other dishes!
Unfortunately, we were disappointed. One of the signature dishes, the roast chicken is dry & overcooked. It also takes an extremely long time for it to be served. Service is functional but did not feel warm. Service was also very slow.
I absolutely love the atmosphere at McKiernan. Rustic barn, ballroom vibe. It is simply one of my favourite places to eat in Montreal time & time again. Never disappointed. Staff is always on point as well. The quality for the price is totally fair & the clientele are a nice mix from all walks of life. No elitism just people passionate about good food.
I've heard that you can rent out the venue for wedding receptions & such as well which would be fabulous!
Their brussels sprouts are one of my single favourite dishes & all of Montreal.
Recently went back for brunch & it was lit! Photos addd to my review.
We visited McKiernan based on the recommendation of a friend. How had we missed coming here? Parking presented the first challenge but there must be a trick to it. The building hosts a range of businesses & everyone arrives by car so it's chaotic. The entrance to McKiernan is on the St. Patrick side & is clearly signed. Once inside there is a gloomy staircase to climb until at last the bright open space is reached & you have arrived at McKiernan. We hadn't booked but we were found a table. Service is friendly & efficient. We chose from the menu ordering the seafood dish & the prime rib sandwich with fries. The food was excellent although we found the portions to be on the small side. Anyway, to compensate we had a donuut & lemon meringue for dessert. Overall we really enjoyed it & we will back but we will book & be prepared for the parking, & probably order more dishes.
Went on Friday night at 10 ish. Service & food was amazing. We had a variety of dishes to share & everything was delish. Do not skip out on the Brussels sprouts & ribs! Our server Nic recommended an amazing orange wine & we finished dinner off with some donuts. 10/10 experience from start to finish, will definitely be back!
McKiernan is the perfect blend of laid-back & upscale, offering top-notch restaurant service in a relaxed, casual atmosphere. The vibe is unbeatable-stylish yet comfortable, making it a great spot whether you're out for a casual bite or something a bit more special. The food is consistently fantastic, with dishes that are both creative & satisfying. It's the kind of place where you get that fancy restaurant experience without any of the fuss. If you're looking for great food & an awesome atmosphere, McKiernan is a must-visit!
Came for the schnitzel, coming back for the brussels sprouts. It is the apex of side dishes. I almost died, like in a good way.
Marcello took exceptional care of me & my girlfriend throughout our dinner. He is the best. Very casual & comfy place to grab food. Some dishes may be on the heavier side which can pair very well with the Cucumber summer salad.
Great brunch spot! The pancakes with fresh berries were delicious, as was the sandwich. You get to dine in a beautiful airy space with natural light, lush greenery, & soft chatter filling the air. Will have to come back to try their dinner menu, but all in all recommend! Update: we came back for dinner & still give this place 5 ⭐️! We were a table of five & got to try multiple dishes. Everything was delicious, but what we all agreed stood out was the fish which was buttery & melted in our mouthes, as well as the brussel sprouts & tartare (get a side of their homemade buns with herb & garlic butter if you can!).
Great service & atmosphere! Food was good but was expecting more from what I had heard about this place. Will be back to try more dishes. We were given free donuts for dessert as they made extra or something, & they were delicious! Love the location & interiors.
We had a wonderful dining experience at McKiernan restaurant! We tried a variety of dishes from the menu, & everything was fantastic - each dish was flavorful & beautifully presented. The staff was attentive & knowledgeable about the menu. One thing to keep in mind is that the place is quite loud, so don't expect a quiet evening. Despite the noise, it's definitely worth a visit for the exceptional food & vibrant atmosphere!
This was our first time visiting Montreal & we were so happy to have made it into McKiernan. Everything about our dining experience was perfect - the stunning & super welcoming space (we LOVED the open floor concept, loads of natural light, thoughtfully curated art/decor/plants, etc), the exceptionally friendly & knowledgable staff (a huge shoutout to Alex - one of the best servers I've ever had - & Rob for their top notch service), &, of course, the variety of incredible dishes we enjoyed (the cucumber/green goddess/ricotta salata special, schnitzel bomba, & blueberry/cheesecake-filled donut were the highlights of the meal). If you're looking for a casual yet elevated dining experience for a date, family dinner, or group outing, McKiernan should be at the top of your list. Looking forward to coming back to dine with y'all soon!
Great chill out place, away from any big croud. Love the interior. Good dishes, specially the cheesecake donut.
Even with a reservation, we had to wait 45 minutes. They sat us at a huge table where we could not hear each other from across the table because it was so large. They were out of their two main dishes (which we came for). However, the food was delicious & the staff were lovely.
