Kyo Bar Japonais is praised for fresh, beautifully presented sushi and a wide range of dishes from sashimi to wagyu and takoyaki, with flavors described as vibrant and well balanced. The vibe is warm and stylish in Old Montreal, blending intimate ambiance for dates with a lively energy that makes evenings feel special. Service consistently earns praise for being attentive and knowledgeable, with staff guiding guests through the menu and helping with sake and cocktail pairings. Many diners describe occasions from Valentine’s nights to anniversaries as memorable, thanks to thoughtful touches and smooth pacing. While the quality and atmosphere shine, some guests mention the price and portions as high and a few experiences of crowding or slower service on peak nights. Overall Kyo Bar Japonais is regarded as a standout choice in Montreal for sushi and Japanese dining, offering reliable excellence and a festive, refined experience.
Tony was an outstanding host & bartender, best Montréal old fashioned (cocktail) made & served by him. Karage was alright but gyoza & shrimp tempura roll was on point.
My partner & I were curious about this place for the past few years so we decided to stop by a few days ago when my mom was in town to try it. Very disappointing, food wise & service wise. First of all, all the food items seemed to be loosely based on Japanese food, but just jam packed with fancy ingredients, leaving no trace of Japanese taste. We ordered a kimchi cream udon, sushi & shrimp tempura. The sushi wasn't much to write home about, which was what we were craving. Just your usual tempura-stuffed rainbow rolls with just caviar or something on the top. The shrimp tempura came out lukewarm & soggy, even looked microwaved & took forever for it to come out. The udon was way too heavy, just bombarded with a bunch of thawed seafood & shimeji mushrooms, & I didn't quite understand the kimchi concept. Food left us all confused. Second, a customer next to us dropped a glass. Could happen, I worked in a restaurant a while ago so I'm familiar with it. But some of the glass seemed like it flew onto my mom's shoe or sock & she kneeled down to check. The manager came to address the customer next to us & laughed, but as he passed my mom, he just looked at her in a strange way instead of asking if everything was alright. Didn't sit well with me. However, our server was generally alright & was informative & nice. Overall, if you're looking for fusion food specifically, this may be the place for you. But in my opinion, this meal was not worth $102.33 & I'm embarrassed to have shown my mom this restaurant. We won't be coming back, not a great place for Asian food at all. You can get sushi for much less & bigger portions than what this place charges.

I recently visited Kyo Bar Sushi & had a mixed experience. The atmosphere was inviting & stylish, & the service was great. We started with the pork belly, which had good flavor but would have benefited from the fat being rendered & crispy. The tempura was good, with a very light batter. We also ordered the chef's maki set which was disappointing, offering little variety & mostly consisting of variations on California or dragon rolls. Overall, Kyo Bar Sushi provides a pleasant dining environment & great service, but the food options we selected were average.
Food is really good, some great dishes. The chicken & beef skewers are great starters & the Curry is amazing. Makis are really good, but a bit slow to make & a bit difficult to understand how the roll actually is made. I will definitely come back & recommend

We were looking forward to eating here as a large number of reviews seemed quite enticing. But unfortunately, the experience we had wasn't as great as we were hoping it would be. The service was passable. The atmosphere was fantastic. I removed one star because we ordered three different dishes to share & all three were disappointing. The lobster tasted quite'fishy', one of the rolls was served to us freezing cold (when it should normally be served room temperature) & chicken karaage was far too sweet (felt like we were eating sweet & sour chicken). I removed another star for pricing. Given the size of the portions (& the slight disappointment in each dish), pricing was excessive.
Amazing food. Beef tataki melted in my mouth. It was full of flavour. We also got the snake rolls & chicken karage - best one I've ever tried. If you're visiting Montreal put this on your list
After having had such a large breakfast & lunch, we wanted something light for the evening. Sushi sounded great & we found this place just around the corner from our hotel. They fit us in on a busy night. Great atmosphere & an excellent waitress. Of course, we ordered several dishes: - Nigiri: sea bass, mackerel, salmon, albacore tuna, red tuna, yellowfin tuna, scallop - Signature roll: rainbow - shrimp tempura, tuna, salmon, albacore, hamachi, avocado - Chicken gyoza: pan-fried chicken or pork dumplings, sweet chili shoyu, truffle oil, green onion We really enjoyed all the dishes: excellent fresh sushi, perfect Gyoza & the "Rainbow" rolls were very tasty. We had a delicious bottle of warm sake, recommended by our waitress. Really nice meal. Thank you KYO! Also posted to my food blog on Instagram @AbbeyKing16

Excellent place with a no-fuss menu of amazing Japanese & fusion food fare. My favourite was the maguro 🍣 tuna tataki with jalapeño. The salmon tataki with apple pieces was also very nice but not as memorable. A nice portion of the miso soup with fragrant mushrooms & the edamame beans cooked perfectly with a dash of sea salt. Then a tall glass of Sapporo.
Big shoutout to my server Megan for her attentiveness: I wanted to make a few hand roll wraps with the tataki so asked for a bowl of rice & some seaweed sheet. She easily accommodated both & I really enjoyed them. I definitely recommend this place.
Feedback: please add a chirashi dish to the menu or just make one up if asked (you have all the ingredients!).
Cold night with only a few places to choose from. The room is gorgeous for my taste with a comfortable temperature, which for some reason many restaurants can't maintain. Our server was very good although as the room filled it became clear the resto was sorely understaffed this evening. The result was unfilled water glasses, dirty dishes left on our table for almost the entire evening & the one thing I do not want to see, hurried staff.
The cocktails were very good. The appetizers were uneven with the agedashi being the winner. The sushi was well made but uneventfull.
The 3 rolls arrived in sequence & were enjoyable & beautifully displayed. The most notable was the last, a roll with a sweet taste that included strawberries.
Overall the sushi was a little above average .
You should though try the black rice dessert which included a very tasty topping of mixed fruits.
