Review Summary

Overall, Katsuya is described as a go-to for generous portions of crispy katsu and a fusion friendly menu that covers pork, chicken, cheese katsu, takoyaki, udon and miso soup with refills. Diners praise the quality, variety and value, with favorites like rose sauce katsu, curry katsu and cheese filled options and plenty of sharing friendly portions. The staff and atmosphere are often noted as friendly and welcoming, and service is quick, though there are occasional complaints about oiliness, overly heavy sauces, long waits and uneven portion details. Many reviews emphasize the reliability and authenticity of the katsu experience while appreciating the sides and sauces that elevate meals. Overall, Katsuya stands out as a top Montreal spot for katsu, offering big portions, tasty sauces and creative twists, while some meals can feel heavier or less consistent depending on the dish.

The freshness & crispiness of the donkatsu I had on-site were truly excellent. The sauce for dipping the donkatsu is absolutely delicious. I definitely want to come back. The staff serving the food was also very friendly.

good portion of katsu. Rice is not tasty. BBQ sauce with the japanese katsu item is strange. Sesame is hard to make into a paste because no space to do it. Everything is korean style, sweet, garlicky.

Shrimp appetizer, miso soup & fries were excellent! Katsuya original chicken was not delicious for us. The sauce was not good

This place brings back memories of Saboten Japanese Restaurant from China ten years ago. The ingredients are fresh & delicious, & the portions are very generous. The service is also very attentive & useful . The only downside is that the sauce is a bit on the light side. It costs around $6 for an additional serving. The salad is free.

Every katsu we tried were delicious! My favourites were the garlic sweet chili katsu & the sweet potato & cheese katsu. You get 2 pieces of katsu if you don't order the cheese or sweet potato katsu. The sweet chili sauce tasted similar to the yangnyeom sauce & the addition of the sweet potato & cheese to the katsu gave it a nice sweet & savoury balance. The service was good & it wasn't too packed on a Saturday lunch. You get unlimited soup, rice & salad refills which is nice. For the price & portion, I think it was worth it! Will come back again!

Good crispy katsu. You can get extra sauce but I don't think it's necessary. Katsu portions are large while rice portion is small. The chicken karaage included 3 types of sauce. The chicken is offered either as wings or boneless, but they only had boneless at the time. Be aware if you like cheese the Brick Cheese katsu includes a ton of cheese & my friend felt it can be a bit of a heavy meal but the cheese does stretch.

My partner & I ate here on Friday August 9th around 4PM. This is a small restaurant conveniently located steps away from the Guy Concordia/St Mathieu exit of the metro. It's close to the university & many other great asian restaurants. Decor is modern, clean. Recently renovated as it opened in June of 2024. I heard about it through social media, they have other chains throughout Canada & the videos I saw all featured beautifully presented, generous portions of fried pork, chicken, fish or cheese drizzles in sauces & curries. My experience was just as advsertised, & delicious! Since we dined early, the restaurant was pretty empty. We were seated right away, offered a jug of cold water & showed how to retrieve the menu. They do not serve a printed menu, you will need to scan a QR code at the table to open up a PDF menu. This is easily accesible on their website as well. The specialty is fried chicken, pork cutlets, fish or cheese deep fried in a light breading & coated with a curry or teriyaki, mayo style sauce. There are different types of curries & sauces to choose from, including carbonara which is an original idea. The dishes are served with a small soup, white rice & pickled slaw/vegetables. We ordered an appetizer of the "snow cheese balls" which are deep fried mozzarella balls covered in a sweet honey type powder. Our main meals were the chicken katsu with carbonara & the pork katsu with original curry. The portions were generous, enough to share, & flavors were amazing. Meats were super tender, the curries were mild, not spicy & the breading on the meats were krispy, cooked perfectly. There's a lot I'd love to try, highly recommend coming with more people if you want to order more food & share. Service was friendly, food was speedy & everything was tasty. Must try!

The portion is HUGE, well worth the 20$ price. This shop specializes in fried cutlets (katsu) : you can choose the type of meat you want (chicken, pork, fish) or vegetarian (cheese or sweet potato & cheese) & also the sauce that you want. They have several options to choose from. I tried the curry one & my friend got the sweet chili supreme. Both were nicely fried & sauces were good. Earlier in the month, I tried more stuff from the menu & the quality was maintained. Get the fried cheeseballs & the yuzu highball. Overall, a good place for lunch, for takeout or just a easy supper.

There's a complementary soup that goes with every meal. I got cheese balls as an appetizer, which are satisfyingly crispy with a melty center. They taste surprisingly sweet, & comes with a sauce that tastes like ketchup. The Japanese pork katsu was good. It is a good portion, with two cutlets, perfectly crispy. The sauce tastes like ketchup too. The service was good despite the restaurant being busy when we went. However, there is no air conditioner or fans, so it was extremely hot since it was so packed & it was about 30 degrees Celsius outside. I personally wouldn't go back for this reason.

First time there & I ordered the honeycomb pork loin katsu. The portion size is huge & really good for the price but I wish there was slightly more sauce for the katsu ratio. Service was great. Would definitely go back & try their other katsu.

First time here with the missus, I tried the Terri Mayo Katsu which is basically a katsu with the toppings that come with takoyaki (sweet bbq sauce, mayo & dry fish flakes). They gave us some cold entrees & soup (refillable) to start which was pretty good. The Katsu itself was really tasty. The place is a bit cramped when it gets busy, there are a ton of small tables for 2 & they're all kinda crammed together in the middle. At least that's how it was for dinner, might be different for lunchtime. All in all, pretty good. Thanks Katsuya MTL

The restaurant needs to turn on the AC...it's too hot in there. The music & the people were too loud. Tonkatsu is not that good. Not enough sauce & too dry. Way too expensive for what it is.

The food was alright. Good portion but nothing incredible. The sauce was too thick. If you've travelled to Japan you know that you grind the sesame seeds & pour the sauce & mix. It was impossible with the tonkatsu sauce they provided.

I was a bit sad that the previous restaurant that occupied this space was gone but at the same time my husband & I were very excited to try the food here. The place was packed & there was a bit of a wait but we understood that we had come during its peak hours. It actually didn't take too long before we were seated & we pretty much knew what we wanted from looking at the menu while waiting. But it there were a lot of people so it took time before the waiter came to take our order. I ordered the Japanese style fish katsu along with a house lemonade while my husband & his friend got the pork loin katsu & each ordered one of their whisky cocktails. Water & a complementary soup was brought right away & we chatted as we waited for the food. Finally my husband & I got our respective orders but for some reason our friend, who had the same plate didn't get his for a long time. At least we finally had our drinks. The waitress asked if we wanted more soup & we accepted but again for some reason our companion did not get his soup. So we waited with him & by the time his plate arrived our food while still warm was no longer hot. The food was okay, it was a good portion but not quite what we had hoped for (my husband loved katsu when he was in Japan it was not quite the same). My fish the batter was nice & crispy but difficult to get the tartare sauce to stick to it. I seemed to have a smaller portion of sesame seeds compared to my husband andbour friend so that when I crushed it it was all stuck the the grooves of the bowl. I had to scrape the grooves to loosen it into my sauce. I think the main disappointment was the drinks could have been served while we were waiting for the food. But the atmosphere was good & the appetizers the tables next to us did look interesting. I might go again but sadly my husband will not.
