Review Summary

Katsuya is widely regarded as a standout destination for authentic, high-quality Japanese comfort food in Montreal, frequently praised for its consistently crispy, tender katsu and generous portion sizes that offer excellent value. Many diners highlight the delicious variety of sauces and creative fusion dishes, such as the rose katsu and udon, which mirror the flavorful experiences found in Japan. While the restaurant experiences occasional challenges with wait times during busy periods and inconsistencies in atmosphere, the staff is generally described as friendly, attentive, and helpful. With its fresh ingredients and comforting meals, this restaurant remains a popular choice for those seeking a satisfying and reliable dining experience in the city center.

Perfectly cooked tonkatsu, it is honestly as good as having the same dish in Japan. Great service, atmosphere & quality of food overall.

I ordered the Gold Katsu. It tasted great, but I didn't know the proper way to eat it at first. It might be helpful to let customers know to crush the sesame seeds first! I didn't expect so much cheese-it felt a bit too rich, & I would have preferred more meat since the cheese took up most of it. On a side note, the waitress was super gentle & friendly!

Quality Katsu has a 2nd location in Montreal! Fluffy, flaky, well done Katsu. In a large dining space instead of a tiny narrow one in Chinatown.

It is in some ways missing the Sando or the fatter cuts/bites but what I ordered was executed to perfection.

Worth craving for.

The food was fantastic but the atmosphere was very poor. It was busy when I entered & waited a bit, then it was time to order & the waiters were very rude & a bad tone. I understand everyone can be tired & their job is hard. But having a dull tone in front of customers is not acceptable. When the waitress asked how we were doing her tone felt insincere & sounded like she was asked to tell us how we were doing. For some reason the service was slow even though there wasn't a lot of people. I understand that they might be overwhelmed by the rush, but other people who came after us got their orders first & had similar dishes to the one we ordered. On the plus side the food was good but the price was high which was fine. I think if the servers were much nicer & not in a rude tone, I would've given this place a happy score. Not sure if I want to come back again.

I've been here several times because the food is consistently good. The portions are quite generous, the sauces are delicious, & the complimentary welcome soup is also very tasty, although I wish the serving was a little bigger. The staff are generally friendly & welcoming. The only downside is that the restaurant seems a bit understaffed during busy hours.

However, what really disappoints me is the way they handle cash payments.

On one visit, I paid in cash & was supposed to receive around $2-3 in change. Instead of giving me my change, the staff simply said'thank you' & moved on, as if the remaining money was automatically considered a tip.

On my most recent visit, my bill was a little over $50, & I paid with a $100 bill. After taking my money, the cashier asked me how much change I wanted back. That made me feel very uncomfortable. The proper procedure should be to return the full change first, & then let the customer decide whether or not to leave a tip. Tipping should always be voluntary, not something customers feel pressured into.

I really enjoy the food & would like to keep coming back, but I hope management addresses this issue because it leaves a very negative impression.

I went a month ago & forgot to share my experience: I loved this place! I went there on the spot in the middle of the afternoon for a solo date & the food was so good. I took these cheesy sweet balls they were amazing. I also tried some noodles (I honestly don't remember the name of the dish) but delicious!! The server was nice & helped me pick something out of their menu for my first time. It took a little while to have my food, besides that 10/10 I will go back!

If you like katsu then this is your place to go. The meat is tender but very crispy on the outside & the sauce is delicious. They also give a generous serving of shredded cabbage.
