Review Summary

Reviewers describe Hoshi as a small, cozy Japanese spot on the edge of Chinatown with authentic flavors, where generous portions and affordable prices pair with a simple menu centered on katsu, curry, udon, tempura and donburi. Dishes like rosu katsu, hire katsu curry udon, katsudon, ten don and salmon don are frequently praised for a crispy crust, juicy meat and well balanced sauces, often accompanied by miso or creamy mushroom soup as a starter. The atmosphere and service are praised as warm, attentive and friendly, with staff going the extra mile and soups served while you wait. While most reviews are glowing, a few note small seating area, wait times during peak hours, and occasional inconsistencies such as overly salty soups or katsu that is not perfectly prepared. Overall, Hoshi is seen as a hidden gem and a standout spot for authentic, flavorful and generous Japanese meals in a modest setting, especially for pork lovers seeking a standout katsu experience.

Hoshi's tonkatsu truly blew me away - it's the best I've tasted outside Japan in years! The pork was thick-cut at 15mm, perfectly cooked to tender, juicy perfection with a satisfyingly crunchy crust. Honestly, it almost sounds like a love song to this dish! I would recommend asking for tonkatsu sauce (sweet) on the side.

The miso soup complemented the meal beautifully, bursting with authentic umami flavor. The service was impeccable, & despite being a cozy, family-run spot, the atmosphere felt genuine & welcoming.

If you're a fan of tonkatsu, I wholeheartedly recommend Hoshi - a true gem for any pork lover.

The pork tenderloin Katsu is really really delicious, very juicy & pink color & absolutely no stinky meaty odor. Also serving with loads of cabbage, I'm fan of the cabbage sauce, it tastes a bit sweet with Yuzu flavor. The only downside is small dining area, only has 5-6 tables, during the busy hour usually need to wait for 20 mins. In short, it's an authentic Japanese restaurant.

A cozy casual Japanese restaurant in Chinatown, serving authentic Japanese street food. Pork cutlet sandwich was the best I have had in Canada. As good as you can get in Japan. Good service too. Limited seating availability. You may need to wait for a while to be seated during busy hours. Credit card was accepted.

We came here twice on our trip to Montreal. Everything about this place is fantastic! We had the Curry Katsu, the Katsudon, the Ten Don & the Katsu Sando, & every dish was just as authentic as we had on our trip to Japan in November! All the compliments to the Chef & all staff

Hoshi was an okay experience. My partner & I came after seeing an ad on Instagram. We started off with complimentary mushoom soup that was a great way to beat the cold. I ordered the Katsu-don, & my partner got the katsu. The katsu were as thick as the pictures showed. It was crunchy & maybe a bit overdone as it was slightly chewy. I personally would've liked the cuts to be thinner if anything because I value the crunchy outside. The egg didn't seem to be seasoned, maybe intentionally, but the sauce with the rice was really good. My partner's comments were that he also found the katsu to be a bit tough & would've liked more of the seasoning on the side. There was also a lot of salad. Overall, this is a cute hole in the wall Japanese restaurant that really tries to give authentic Japanese food. Personally, I don't see myself coming here too often, but it was good.
