Gibby's provided a mixed experience. A recent visit (July 2025) for a special occasion was unfortunately a major letdown when compared to our five-star experience back in 2022. That first visit set a high bar, making Gibby's our top choice for this special celebration. Unfortunately, our recent experience was exceptionally disappointing.
Disenchanting Seating & Ambiance
I'd specifically requested a private, intimate table in my online reservation, knowing it was a special occasion. Arriving early on a Monday evening, the restaurant was not busy, with plenty of quieter seating available. Despite this, the hostess seated us in a noisy section, surrounded by a lively group of businessmen & a family with young children. Our small table was also positioned uncomfortably close to another, making private conversation impossible. It was baffling why, given my request & the available space, we were placed in such an unsuitable spot.
Rushed & Questionable Service
Our server was polite but seemed rushed. When I mentioned our special occasion, he gave a cursory acknowledgment, in stark contrast to the genuine interest shown by our server back in 2022. It felt like our server on this occasion was focused on moving things along & maximizing the bill, constantly suggesting the most expensive items & add-ons.
The wine service was particularly concerning. I asked for a recommendation & was immediately pointed to the priciest options. I selected a different bottle, still pricey but more reasonable, which he confirmed. However, the bottle he brought had an unusual label, making it hard to identify. I accepted it, but later discovered on the bill that it was $50 more expensive than what I ordered. I didn't want to haggle on our special night, but it left me wondering if it was an honest mistake. He also acknowledged my request for a decanter but never brought it.
Underwhelming Food & Value
The food quality wasn't as good as our previous visit. Both steaks, ordered medium, arrived well-done. We chose not to send them back, simply wanting to conclude our disappointing evening. Unlike our 2022 visit, there were no complimentary desserts for our special occasion.
Ultimately, our bill was significantly higher than before, for a far less satisfying experience. The combination of the poor seating, rushed & seemingly up-selling service, & food issues meant our special occasion dinner felt unpleasant & overpriced.
Conclusion - Highly Disappointed
While Gibby's has a charming historic setting was very impressive back in 2022, my recent visit demonstrated a significant dip in quality & value. The best part of our July 2025 visit was recalling the wonderful experience we had two years prior. After this experience, & considering all the other great options in the area, I'm not sure if a third visit is likely.
Le restaurant Gibby's peut paraître un peu guindé au premier abord, mais dès qu'on y entre, on comprend vite que tout est tout simplement parfait.
Le service est impeccable, l'accueil professionnel mais chaleureux, & chaque détail est soigné.
Quant aux plats… un vrai régal du début à la fin ! Tout était savoureux, bien présenté, & préparé avec une grande attention.
Si vous cherchez une expérience culinaire chic, raffinée & inoubliable, Gibby's est une adresse que je recommande vivement.
Visited Gibby's after over 20 years. The service was very friendly but painfully slow taking over 3 hours to be served. Although busy, the restaurant was not full.
The escargot were minute, the Gibby salad was excellent & our steaks were cooked to perfection. The price was outrageous. There are better & less expensive steak restaurants in Montreal. Caters mainly to the tourist clientele. Would not return.
Diane, our server was fabulous & very attentive to details. The food? Equally fabulous! I defy anyone to finish the Beef Wellington. It is that big a portion. Diane even suggested the wine that would go well with our meal. Great! No surprise that we return to Gibby's every time we're in Montreal.
Me & my husband actually visited here over a year ago but l couldn't not leave a review for this place! We visited Montreal as part of our Canada honeymoon travelling over from England & this was one of the first reservations we made after reading about it! We fully enjoyed the steak experience & all the food in each course was exceptional. My husband enjoyed a margherita (one of the best he's had!), & myself possibly the biggest glass of prosecco I'd seen! Cynthia who looked after us was second to none, & even got a polaroid photo of us after hearing we were on our honeymoon. Thank you Gibby's for a brilliant experience.
We have been to Montreal many times, but this was our first visit to Gibbys. I can easily say that this is now my favorite restaurant ever! The food, the service, the atmosphere, everything was perfect!
We ordered the grilled shrimp for the appetizer, & it was delicious. We loved the wedge salad with blue cheese & our steaks were perfectly cooked. All I can say is, come hungry because they feed you well.
My only regret is that I didn't come to Gibbys every time I had been to Montreal in the past!

May be one of the best lunch experiences I've ever had. Gibby's dining room is located in a beautiful old building, the food was exquisite, service was top notch & the value for money ($50 for a three-course lunch) was excellent. First time tasting French Onion Soup & I can't imagine it ever being better than that. Will be making a point to visit every time I go to Montreal in future. Can't recommend Gibby's enough!
If I had to choose only one place to return to when I visit Montreal again, it would be Gibbys. The service, atmosphere & food were a winning combo. We ordered more food & drinks, but was too busy stuffing my face with good food to take all the photos. Yes that's how good this place is. Perfect place for celebrating life milestones!
Gibbys was absolutely outstanding in every facet - food, service, atmosphere - nothing left unturned.
The bone-in fillet is out of this world delicious, the most savory fillet I've ever had, & Isabelle's service was outstanding & made our visit so much more special.
10/10 will absolutely be my top restaurant list for life.

Went to Gibbys Monday April 14 for my partners birthday, amazing service from the second we stepped in. Got sat at Vitaly's Table he gave us the most amazing experience we could've asked for. Great man, great waiter, amazing service & we had an amazing night. I Recommend this location & vitally of course! 10/10. Food was amazing too by the way.
With the new ownership & menu Gibby's has lost its Lustre. The menu is not nearly as varied, the salad has slipped in quality & the service is not the same experienced crew that I loved. The dessert was actually stale. I would recommend RibnReef as the premier Steakhouse. I would only go back if you are looking for the old Montreal experience
Dès notre arrivé dans ce lieu historique jusqu'à la prise en charge de notre serveuse Cynthia, l'arrivé de notre nourriture & la fin de notre repas, l'expérience a été exceptionnelle. L'ambiance est unique, le service excellent & quoi dire de la nourriture! La salade gibbys, buratta, cowboy steak & la patate toute garnie débordaient de saveur! Notre serveuse s'est assurée qu'on ne manquait de rien, du début à la fin, & a même pris la peine de nous prendre en photo polaroid. Après avoir fait plusieurs steakhouse à Montréal, je peux dire sans équivoque que mon expérience au gibbys est de loin la meilleure & la plus mémorable! Merci Cynthia d'avoir rendu cette soirée aussi superbe!

Had a birthday dinner at Gibbys & It was the best thing that we had on our trip to Montreal. The food, service & ambience were perfect! We got assisted by Luke & made our experience unforgettable!
Première expérience au Gibbys. Nous avons eu le plaisir d'avoir Allison pour notre expérience culinaire. Malgré l'âge de l'endroit le décor & le confort étaient optimaux. Nous avons tous les deux pris des morceaux de viandes & ils étaient cuits à notre satisfaction & étaient de très bonne qualité.
Tout était parfait mais je tiens à réitérer que ce qui les démarque c'est la qualité du service.
Gibby is one of the best steakhouse in Montreal, they offer high-quality meat cuts, the Rockefeller oysters, & my best dish there is the garlic snail, & when you take the bread & dip it into the garlic sauce. I highly recommend this place.
We came to Gibbys for a business social event with the party coming from outside Montreal. Gibbys was perfect for the occasion. Service was very good with no problems encountered.Gibbys is in the old town where parking is always a challenge, so we used public transport. The food was excellent but the portions are large so leave room when coming here. Anyway, the experience was very good. Make sure you book, if you plan to come here.
