Review Summary

Dobe & Andy is widely recognized as a go-to destination in Montreal for authentic Hong Kong-style barbecue, with many patrons praising the flavorful char siu, crispy roast pork, and signature duck dishes. While most diners appreciate the generous portions, affordable pricing, and nostalgic, retro atmosphere, experiences with service and consistency can vary significantly. Frequent visitors often highlight the scallion oil and house-made sauces as standout elements, though some note occasional issues with food temperature, portion sizes, or communication. Despite mixed feedback regarding recent changes to the menu and service efficiency, the restaurant remains a beloved staple for those seeking comforting, traditional Cantonese cuisine.

Disappointing experience. Been ordering for 9 years. Seemed like a half portion & noodles were over cooked, I've order the exact same dish multiple times. Would love a credit/refund. Truly a gem of the area that I look forward to every time.

I've tried a lot of Chinese restaurants in Montreal & this one is far the best one for Char Siu & Beef Hofun Noodles. It was so good that we went back twice in a row.

ate at Doby's & Andy for lunch at Time Out market. crispy pork with chinese broccoli & 3$ extra for small portion of soggy noodles instead of rice. Very small portion in takeaway container. noodles tasted like nothing. crispy pork was good but only 5 small pieces. 27$ including 15% tip for one of the worst meals I have eaten this decade!

Dobe & Andy- a classic Chinese roast meats institution in Montreal.

As someone who needs a rice fixing at least once a week when traveling, I've been to Dobe & Andy every time I've been to Montreal, totaling 6+ times over the last 4 years. So my review is one part a love letter to the scallion oil that combines with the fattiness of the roast meats, & one part nostalgia.

If you come here, you are here for the meat platter. Char siu is solid, chicken is solid, roast pork belly is the standout. Duck skin is inconsistently crispy, but has never been underseasoned. With the scallion oil, any combination with the roast pork will hit the spot.

The other rice & noodle dishes are solid as well. We're here for the classic roast meats & classic Chinese dishes, not creative culinary takes. Dobe & Andy hits exactly the right spot- that of a weary traveler looking for a meal to reset the brain & stomach.

Bathroom can be difficult, as you need a key to access the stalls located in a separate part of the building.

Special shoutout to Ricky, who made our last visit memorable. Always relaxed & friendly service.

Finally visited the famous Dobe & Ande & when I first saw the menu I was underwhelmed. But then I ordered something really simple & was simple blown away! The menu says choose a meat & then choose some form of noodles or rice. What you get is just perfect in terms of flavor balance. Had the char siu with noodles ♥? That scallion sauce is insane! Order extra ahead of time, thank me later.

Last time I came here was before COVID. Unfortunately, it's been a disappointment. Used to take the lunch combo. Took the Cantonese chow mein & pork soup noodles.

Cantonese chow mein : they used oyster sauce to make the sauce… big no already. Too salty but not even flavour. Dish was really small for a Chinese dish. There was no'Wok fire' taste at all, felt like cooked at home.

Pork noodles : broth could had a bigger hit of flavour, overall it was ok.

Milk tea was good.

Btw : What happened to all Asian employees ? Even the chef isn't Asian.

@Nathan , you must be sick saying this is Vancouver level food. This is bottom end Montreal level chinese food.

A restaurant giving this kind of quality food in Toronto or in a Asia country would immediately bankrupt lol.

Locally famous, I was eager to finally give it a try, & while not disappointing was a bit uneven. On the plus side: huge portions for the price (I got the'Signature Dish' with BBQ duck & Char Siu or BBQ pork shoulder with Lomein noodles) - enough for a second meal as leftovers. The duck (chopped in sections) was meaty, not fatty or full of useless pieces of membrane & bone like you get in many other places. Tender pork with nice crispy crust too. Good chinese broccoli side dish (included).

The less impressive side: the noodles seemed a bit dry & slightly sticky, not very hot. Worse, the entire plate had a very minimal (but very tasty) sauce, not enough to enjoy with the quantity presented. When I asked the server (who was very helpful initially with recommendations but then disappeared, so I had to go find her in front) for more sauce, she didn't seem to know which it was & instead offered me a small to go container of oyster sauce, which wasn't the matching sauce I wanted. Thus the flavor of the dishes was underwhelming.

Glad I took some home to add some sauce of my own! The interior was basic but pleasant. Given how expensive dining is now, the effort to provide good value was appreciated. I just wish the execution that day (it wasn't busy when I was there) was a bit more careful. Would try again.

The food is not what it used to be. The other day i went to Dobe & andy with my family & we all ordered the classic dish that we've been ordering for the last 10 years : egg noodle soup with char siu. It used to be such a comforting & flavourful dish. Now, it's tasteless. The portion has diminished but i understand with inflation. However the broth tasted like water there were no ginger notes, no garlicky taste, truly disappointing. I really hope it goes back to what it was because there aren't any other broths better than the ones i've tasted at dobe & andy

The food was the low point. The duck noodles & Chinese greens were excellent. The bbq meat plate arrived with everything cold. We literally could not eat it. There is something disconcerting about being served cold sliced duck & chicken. It looked delicious. The Tea arrived Luke warm. Service was no better than average. Hard pass on this place.
