In 1861, Thomas Wilson first established its hardware store at 400 Place Jacques Cartier and for over 155 years, this building stood at the very heart of the Old Montreal. In 1970, the iconic French restaurant Chez Queux moved in and would remain there for well over 40 years.
Today it is our turn to leave our mark on this legendary Montreal building. We welcome all who come by, providing food the way we like it, simple, fresh and delicious. After a long day of sightseeing or while on a break from your bicycle ride in the Old Port, drop by Comptoir 400, we are always happy too see (and feed) you!
Reviews of Comptoir 400 highlight a waterfront Old Port setting with a cozy terrace and a vibe that many find casual and inviting. Dishes praised include mussels, fries, poutine, pizzas such as arugula and vegetarian varieties, and burgers, with several noting fresh, hot, well prepared fare and good value for the area; however, some reviews cite portions or quality that can be uneven and a poutine or meat sandwich that falls short. Service is described as friendly and attentive by many, with commendable hospitality noted, while other comments point to inconsistent or slow service, or timing that feels rushed. The atmosphere is often described as nice and lively, sometimes with music and a great location, though crowding and pacing issues are mentioned in some visits. Overall Comptoir 400 seems a convenient, popular choice with a strong location and solid dishes, tempered by occasional service gaps and variability in portion sizes and value.
Late review. We went a few months ago & the poutine was extraordinary! I remember the service being kind overall, however, they tried to switch to English when I was practicing my French with them, even though there was not a lot of people in the place that could explain that behaviour justified in a rush of communication. One thing as a tourist that make you enjoy the place is the willingness to try to share your culture, providing a good experience.
Today September 29 end of season,
I decided to try this restaurant because its menu caught my eye. I was coming back from a meeting & really wanted a burger!
On arrival, I was greeted by several smiling & polite employees. The place is clean, & I loved the atmosphere, especially the 1980s music!
The food was served hot & freshly prepared. The fries were well-cooked & crispy, just how I like them!
I also had a Baileys Latte & was personally one of the best I've had!
I recommend this place 10/10 to everyone!

Really nice, quality service. I enjoyed the smoked meat pizza-it was much better than the sandwich I had at Swartz itself-with great, tasty mozzarella.
The atmosphere was mediocre, but we did visit at 3pm, so that may explain it.
What side apartment was the great, friendly service.
The restaurant is located in an beautiful area, overlooking Jacques Cartier Place in the center of Old Montreal. We were outside, the patio was designed to keep away the heavy rain. When it comes to the food, it's pretty much your standard restaurant. It was pretty average but again we expected it coming to a place like this The only thing that really disappointed me were the portions, I expect to leave places like these absolutely full & we were not.
