Review Summary
Reviews portray Au Pied de Cochon as a celebrated, unabashedly indulgent Montreal institution where bold Quebecois cooking shines through crowd pleasers like the duck in a can and foie gras poutine, with foie gras nigiri and other decadent creations frequently singled out for delight. The open kitchen, energetic vibe, and generous portions create a lively, convivial dining atmosphere that many guests describe as memorable and worth the splurge, though some mention that it can be very loud and crowded. Reservations are often recommended due to high demand, and the staff are repeatedly praised for attentiveness, knowledge, and enthusiasm, adding to the sense of a special experience. A few guests note occasional inconsistencies, such as dishes arriving at varying temperatures, long waits during peak hours, or perceived excess in richness, and some wish for more balance or vegetarian options on the menu. Overall, the consensus is that Au Pied de Cochon delivers an extraordinary, unforgettable feast that lives up to its reputation, with many guests planning return visits and citing the signature dishes as must tries.

One of the best meals I've ever had. The restaurant has a wonderful relaxed vibe. It was so comfortable to just sit with my friends & talk while we drink wine. Everything we ordered was amazing, but I think the best part of the meal was how friendly & kind the staff were. They were super helpful with recommendations to order, very friendly & welcoming. It was like having a Michelin level dinner in your own home. This place is definitely a must visit when in Montreal.

This was our destination meal on our trip to Montréal from Kamloops BC. Five stars are not enough. Not only were the food & drinks sublime, the service was among the best I've ever received in any restaurant anywhere. As a bonus, because we sat at the bar we got to watch the ballet of the amazing chefs cooking & playing the incredible food.

Thank you so much to everyone who was working last night. You made us feel welcome & you fed our souls while filling our bellies beyond capacity!

My husband & I left last night wishing we hadn't come. We came all the way from NYC for a conference, & this was the one restaurant I felt I had to go to. My husband had been before with a larger group, same server as we had last night. Unfortunately, last night he was awful. It took 30 min for him to come say hello & get a drink order In. We proceeded to wait another 30 or 40 to get our order in. Mind you, both times, the man helping us with water & cleaning our table was the one who kept reminding our server about us. I honestly wish he was our server. Two dishes came out, & I almost think the server forgot about the third we ordered, because it took 40 min to get it, & again he was reminded by the kind gentlemen refilling our water. The restaurant is always packed, so I didn't expect quick service, but this was flat out unacceptable & disrespectful. My husband had no issues when he was there before, same busy type night, & waiter. The kitchen is exceptionally competent, so I don't think you can blame them. The manager was very kind, comped our drinks & apologized for how everything went, & threw in a crème brûlée. We really appreciated that, but sadly don't feel the need to return. I'd give it a 1 star if not for the high quality, well thought out food.

I have not been here in 15 years, but it was just as stunning this time as it was then. Thank you for making a girl's weekend even more magical. Everything was perfect, from the service to the incredible drinks & food. I will not wait another 15 to come back!

This place is probably my favorite restaurant that I have ever been to. This is the second time I've been here & the food, drinks, & service are outstanding. If you love this type of food, you won't be disappointed. If you don't love this food, I don't know what to say because it is phenomenal. Keep doing what you're doing. It is being done correctly.

The food was incredible there is no doubt. But the service wasn't very good for this level of cuisine. It was my partner's bday & I booked like 2months in advance with a note asking for 2 welcome shots when we arrive(that I would pay ofc). They forgot about the bday & about the shots & after I asked 2 times, I got our shots, 25min after we sat down & after we almost finished our first drink...Also we waited to be seated for about 20min ( which I understand that it might happen) but in this case, when It's about a birthday , I dont think we should wait that much to be seated. We were offered to have a drink while we wait ( in the hallway) but when they bought our drinks(in the hallway) ,the same second they told us to follow them to the table.... in this case why not put the drinks directly on the table instead of giving it to us in the hallway & making us follow you with the drinks all the way to the table..... it was very clumsy & they didn't even bother to offer us the shots or maybe apologize for the waiting time...... I'm sorry I never write so much but I was really unhappy because it started out birthday night wrong, especially since we were waiting for so long to go there & make the night special.

There is no better restaurant anywhere. Maybe as good, but none better. We sat at the chef's counter & it's clear this establishment cares about every detail of the food & drink. We ordered soup a l'oignon, canard conserve & côte de Cochon. Every bite was a masterpiece. It was especially appreciative of our server's ability to suggest wine by the glass pairings.

I think this place is unfortunately victim of being way too ‘hyped' from years of being on various travel & food programs about Montréal. I made a reservation for 10 about a month before my trip, as that was the only time left because it was a busy time of year (Dec 30th). My husband & I got there at 9:50, & we were told to wait for the table to be ready - totally understandable. When we were seated, it took about 45 mins for us to order, get our drinks, & for food to finally make it to the table (almost after 11 by the time everything arrived). Service was reasonable, our server offered me a tasting for cider & was very cheerful, but I feel as though food & drinks could have been brought more promptly.
Other things of note:
-no listing of the menu online, so it's hard to research what you'll want to have beforehand
-the food is all extremely rich; buttery, creamy, etc., but not always in the best way. We didn't finish anything because we just felt too heavy to stomach it all
-ambiance, music was very loud & it was quite hot in the dining room. we liked the music, but it was hard to have a decent conversation because of the noise.
-foie gras; I understand for some people it is a delicious luxury, but having now tried it, I feel as though the cost of creating it (look it up if you don't know) far outweighs any added flavour or decadence to the food
I think if you want the ‘status' of saying you've been to Au Pied du Cochon, you may love it, but I think as far as a truly delicious, balanced & memorable dining experience go, you could do far better in Montreal for the cost.

It was ok my wife loved her mac & cheese with foie gras, but my canard en conserve was rare (nice) but the the partial breast was not seared so the skin was rubbery & the thick fat layer left a huge pool of grease in the bowl & still a thick layer of fat on the duck. The foie gras still had a large piece of inedible arterie running through it. Considering a 225$C bill (including tax & tip) for service that ignored us didn't check back for drink orders other than the soda water with lemon to clear the grease from my mouth or the dessert order my wife wanted I wouldn't come here again

I've waited to come to Montreal a couple years & was finally able to visit au pied de cuchon. The wait was well worth it & if I was only come back after another 2 years, I would for sure still wait. The staff were incredible. From the minute we walked in from the beautiful host, to all the great hair styled guys, to our wonderful bartender at the wood to our top notch mustached server. This dinner wont be one I soon forget. Great food. Great drinks. Great company. Great staff. Great atmosphere. My new favourite restaurant in Canada.

Disappointing experience. The food was good but the service left a lot to be desired. Our waiter forgot to put in a drink order as well as an order for a side. We would have ordered an additional round of drinks but our waiter never came by. Had to ask for the check twice. Also, the kitchen is in full view of people sitting at the bar & there was one cook who kept licking his fingers & then handling food. Really gross.

* If the host suggests that you start your meal at the bar & then be moved to your table when it is ready, don't agree to start at the bar unless you are also wiling to finish your meal at the bar. The moment you are seated, no matter where in the restaurant, you are no longer the host's, or anyone's for that matter, responsibility to follow up.
* If you keep asking about your table after being seated at the bar, the manager will avoid you & send someone else to pretend like nothing ever happens & that they did not promise you a table
* If you seat at the bar, be very proactive about flagging ANY server who runs pass you. Otherwise, no one would come by to check on you or ask for your orders or give you your food.
* Overall, highly recommend that you only go to this restaurant if you can get a reservation at 8PM or earlier. Because then you will be able to leave the restaurant by 11:30PM with some food. If you can only get a reservation for after 8PM, don't expect to be properly seated for about an hour after your reservation time, & don't expect to finish your meal until midnight or 1AM.
* But if you can get a reservation before 8PM, it seems that you could take as much time as you want, including taking 2 hours for 2 people to drink a bottle of wine, including multiple smoking break because the restaurant doesn't impose a slightly time limit on its customers, especially if they dress the part.

We had an incredible experience here. The staff were so friendly & personal. They accommodated our big group with some dietary restrictions (celiac, vegetarian) with nothing but kindness & consideration. The wine, drinks, & food were absolutely delightful.

La nourriture n'est comparable a aucun autre restaurant, c était excellent!!! Malgré un service très long (1hr pour le premier drinks , 1h45 pour recevoir notre entrée) & très bruyant, nous avons quand même apprécié notre soirée.
