About

Au Pied de Cochon serves as a temple of unapologetic indulgence, prioritizing rich, meat-centric preparations that celebrate traditional Quebecois culinary roots. The menu emphasizes decadent ingredients, most notably featuring foie gras integrated into hearty comfort dishes like poutine and tourtière. Every preparation centers on high-calorie, soul-warming plates that challenge modern notions of restraint by utilizing every part of the animal. The kitchen specializes in robust, rustic cooking techniques that favor heavy sauces, deep fats, and generous portions. Patrons encounter an environment defined by clamorous energy and direct, high-volume production that mirrors the intensity of the kitchen. This institution remains a focal point for those seeking a singular, visceral experience centered on the unbridled application of butter, cream, and meticulously sourced proteins in every singular serving.

Review Summary

Au Pied de Cochon is widely regarded as a must-visit culinary institution in Montreal, famous for its unapologetically rich, decadent, and bold Quebecois cuisine. Many patrons praise the signature dishes, particularly the duck in a can and various foie gras preparations, noting that the food is both creative and deeply comforting. While the experience is frequently described as memorable and lively, some visitors mention the restaurant can be loud, cramped, and quite pricey. Most reviews highlight the exceptional, warm, and attentive service provided by the staff, which significantly enhances the atmosphere despite occasional long wait times or reservation challenges. While a few diners found the food too heavy or the experience less refined than expected, the overwhelming consensus is that it offers a unique and indulgent gastronomic adventure that justifies its long-standing reputation.

I was honestly extremely scared for the stuffed pig's foot & assortment of foie gras related entrees. Especially since they touted themselves as the #1 producer of foie gras in the entire world, which I kindve find hard to believe. The inside was very nicely decorated, with lots of custom made cutlery, plates, & alcohols. The waiter was very hospitable, explained all the specials & dishes simply & made us all feel very welcome. The food did take a long time to come out, but we were able to get our drinks & appetizers out relatively quickly so it didn't bother us too much. I really loved the poutine & tagliatelle, & the pigs foot actually wasn't as terrifying as I thought it would be. A slight livery aftertaste, but nothing too crazy, just really fatty which wasn't my favorite. We also ordered their maple syrup based pie dessert which was heavenly. Overall, a great experience, but maybe pigs foot just isn't for me. Would recommend.

Not bad. Only 3 little pieces of foie gras on the poutine. Gravy is made of foie gras but tastes pretty generic. Duck tartare nori was very salty but still enjoyable.

The food was impressive. Flavours were deliciously crafted with each bite. Although pricey, the quality & freshness of the food makes sense & everything was delicious. Fave items were the temaki hand roll, foie gras nigiri, & the foie gras poutine

We made a reservation for two people, but still ended up having to wait almost half an hour because the patrons at our table were still eating. I was excited to try the duck in the can & the foie gras poutine but unfortunately they told us they did not have the duck in the can.

The poutine took a long time to get to us, & it was good but not great enough to justify the long wait & below par service.

I have frequented this establishment on numerous occasions throughout the years, & it has consistently met my, & on occasions exceeded my expectations.

While the wine selection is extensive, I highly recommend sampling their in-house ciders or cocktails.

For first-time visitors, the duck in a can is an excellent choice. It is a substantial & flavorful dish that will leave you feeling satisfied.

Their foie gras dishes are all exquisite, but my personal favorites are the nigiri & the poutine, which I consider to be the finest in the city.

The atmosphere is consistently vibrant & bustling. The staff members are all courteous, polite, & provide exceptional service. Although the evening began a bit slowly, it was understandable given how crowded the restaurant was.

I often forget that the restrooms are situated in a somewhat inconvenient location, behind the bar. Additionally, they could benefit from more frequent attention throughout the shift to maintain their cleanliness.

I dont believe anyone can be disappointed making a reservation here. Im excited to book my next visit.

We had a terrible experience dining here. At first, it seemed seamless as the Foie gras poutine came early & we enjoyed it while waiting for the main. Then the mains that we ordered, which is the halibut & pork chop came about an hour later. I finished a whole Netflix episode while waiting for this. The food here left our stomachs with immense discomfort, as all foods were heavy in taste. Service was really slow & it took them a long time to even bring the card machine for us to pay. I don't recommend coming here.

Enjoyed a really nice meal here! I tried the foie gras poutine which was to die for - the sauce was rich, the chips were crispy, the curds were melty & perfectly squeaky & having foie gras on top felt so decadent & luxurious. The service was great - friendly, knowledgeable & attentive from the moment I walked in. The atmosphere was lively, & it's always nice to see a packed restaurant (be sure to book ahead!) You absolutely should dine here - you'll be in for a real treat!

Definitely need reservations to enter. The place was packed the whole time we were there. I was anticipating an incredible meal from all the great reviews. Making a reservation on their site was easy. Yet, we
were confused as to why a couple with a later reservation (who arrived early) was seated before us even though we were on time & there before them. But overall, the staff was friendly, so we chalked it up to a misunderstanding.
The menu is limited, but I appreciate the focus. They know what they do well & aren't afraid of perfecting it.
We ordered the fraisier cocktail (vodka with aperol & strawberry sorbet on top) & the Mexican mojito (got a kick in the bottom of your throat spicy). Both really good & they didn't skimp on the
alcohol. I was very giddy by the time they brought the foie gras nigiri. This is why I wanted to eat here & am so glad they keep it on the menu!
One order $29 comes with 4 spoon servings, by the way.
Add the soy ginger sauce like they suggest because it cuts the fattiness iust right. Perfection.
Oh là là! Decadent, smooth & buttery. Why don't more places serve foie gras like this? Genius!
We also ordered the pork chop, paparadelle pork ragù & a
side of the salt & maple sugar fries. All were good, but the foie gras still had them beat. The fries had nice flavor, but we were really disappointed because it seemed like we got the tail end of the fry
basket. The bottom & middle of our paper cone contained all the broken bits. I felt a bit deceived.
We got the pudding chomeur that people said was a classic staple. It was basically cake batter swimming in maple sugar syrup. It was sickly sweet. If sweet sweet desserts is your preference, get the pudding.
I'm glad we got to try the pudding, but I regretted not ordering a second order of the foie gras instead to end the night.

I would come back for the cocktails & the foie gras & maybe the foie gras poutine.

Excellent meal with excellent service! I will forever be dreaming about the Foie Gras poutine 🤤. We also thoroughly enjoyed the French onion soup.
