Dining at Au Pied de Cochon in Montreal is less a meal & more a rite of passage for lovers of indulgent, unrestrained Québécois cuisine. The iconic Duck in a Can (Canard en Conserve), is a culinary spectacle that lives up to every bit of its mythos. It arrives with all the dramatic flair you'd hope for a literal can is opened tableside to release a rich, intoxicating cascade of duck breast, foie gras, balsamic demi-glace, & tender cabbage over a golden crouton, creating a plate as unapologetically decadent as it is deeply satisfying. It's rustic, bold, & laced with the kind of culinary confidence that defines the Pied de Cochon experience.
Alongside this tour de force, we ordered the Seafood Tower for Two, which offered a stunning contrast in tone. Where the duck is heavy, comforting, & primal, the tower was light, elegant, & vibrant a vertical celebration of freshness. Plump oysters, briny & kissed with mignonette, rested beside tender clams, juicy shrimp, & perfectly poached lobster. Each bite was refreshing, a clean counterpoint to the richness of the main event, making the two dishes unexpectedly perfect foils.
The atmosphere inside Au Pied de Cochon is electric with a kind of joyous irreverence. The space is lively & unfussy, filled with the hum of locals & tourists alike food pilgrims drawn by the legacy of Martin Picard's exuberant vision of Québécois cuisine. The open kitchen hums with energy, & there's a warmth & theatricality that makes every dish feel like part of a show.
This restaurant is more than just a place to eat it's a culinary landmark. It celebrates excess not for shock value, but as an ode to the richness of local ingredients & the traditions that shaped them. Whether you come for the legendary Duck in a Can or the pristine seafood, you're stepping into a living, breathing emblem of Montreal's food scene. It's not just worth the hype it defines itView more
We could only book the one bar seating left at 10PM on a Wednesday right after Holiday. There were quite a bit of empty seats when we arrived so me & my husband could be seated on a table. We snacked for dinner earlier already because the reservation was late at night. My husband wanted to order the beef tripes but was sold out. Dessert options of the day were not interested at all for me. My husband is allergic to alcohol & I am pregnant so we cannot drink. We ended up only getting couple of appetizers for a late night snack which were the duck temaki & foie gras nigiri. They were delicious & unique but the price value were not good. Paid $60 for just 6 bites. Glad that we finally tried the restaurant but probably won't go back. Would like to visit again for the two appetizers though if the price is better.View more
Be ready for a very rich & heavy food experience. Personally, I can't handle that much foie gras but it was delicious. We went during the summer & the place was very warm. Water did not have any ice. The duck in a can was great & a cool experience. The pigs foot was very good & quite a sizeable dish. Unfortunately, it took about 40 min for us to get our order in but we were ok just enjoying the vibe.View more
We ordered 8 drinks & they are all taste amazing!! We love it! Also the foie gras nigiri! That's a must try!! We ordered 12 pieces & finished em all! Duck in can is very special, you will never taste it outside Montreal. Pork feet is my favorite!!very juicy very gravy!View more
I went in with mixed expectations, as I know that the border between indulgent QC fare & tourist trap can be muddled. I am so happy with what we got. An attentive but not overbearing service & dishes mostly on the memorable side. Highlights: foie gras terrine to moan for, great duck tartare, & all the mains: great halibut, otrageous & delicious stuffed pig hoof (a beast of a dish) & delicious pork sirloin. Great use of seasonal mushrooms. Desserts were moreish even after the generous portions of the pork mains.
Less impressive: the foie gras nigiri was taken over by the ponzu sauce, & the razor clams were not uniform in cooking but eh, still nice.
Recommended for whoever is looking for Quebecoise indulgence as advertised by that Bourdain documentary. I am sure there are other venues that provide it, but this one is accessible & its reputation is justified. Stick to seafood if fat turns you off.View more
What an incredible dining experience! The atmosphere was warm & welcoming, the service was great, & the food... just wow. The foie gras poutine & duck in a can were rich, decadent, & absolutely unforgettable! Definite must-tries. I'll definitely be coming back!View more
A must-visit for foie gras lovers!
Dining at Au Pied de Cochon was an unforgettable experience. We started with the poters, & for our mains, we had the famous Canned Duck & the Rossini mushroom steak with foie gras. Both were absolutely phenomenal - rich, decadent, & bursting with flavor.
I was initially skeptical about the canned duck (it just sounded unusual), but our waiter explained that it's cooked & sealed in-house & happens to be their most popular dish. I'm so glad we took the chance - it ended up being the star of the night. The foie gras on the lions main mushroom steak was melt-in-your-mouth perfection.
I'd heard this was the place to go for foie gras in Montreal, & it did not disappoint. If you're in the city & looking for an indulgent, unique dining experience, don't skip this place. Totally worth the splurge!View more
I really enjoyed this place. I find every dishes of the meal was great, rich, complex & perfectly created. I love the fries so much. Its the simple thing but they just made it perfectly fine.. it covered with salt & maple sugar. We also ordered the temaki which is really amazing.. crunchy & yummy. The foie gras nigiri were delicious, i love it.
The duck in the can is good but i dont really enjoy it much since they are too much fat & its a bit chewy. ( just my personal opinion) still the taste is complex & good.
Friendly services. Will come back to try other menus.View more
Air conditioner didn't work front of house. It was very hot & humid that day & harder to breathe. Food is very flavourful & meals can be for 2 people. Recommend doing 1 duck dish & a pasta or fish dish to balance the richness from the duck dishes.View more
Everything is delicious & has the layer of taste. What i like most is the fondant dessert. Duck in a can seem to be the must thing to try but we like it the least because it is a bit oily for us. We mentioned in our reservation that we came here to celebrate our anniversary & the server really made something for us on the dessert part. Thanks for that. Overall. It's a good experience.View more
OH MY WORD!! My first night visiting Montreal & I was able to snag a spot at the bar. The bartender made me a nice off menu mocktail & I had some really good locally sourced sparkling water. I ordered the duck tartare & the foie gras poutine - which is a must move for first timers! The duck tartare was served sushi style with crispy potato bits & wrapped in seaweed. Best to eat with your hands. Delicious! The main delight for me was the foie gras poutine. It was like nothing I've ever experienced before. There are two different sauces that go so well together & the cheese curds are cut slightly longer on the bottom. The fries were perfectly crisp & the foie gras had a lovely char to it. Everything works so perfectly together & I was beyond joyed for my specific life choices that brought me to this heavenly dish. Thank you so much, Au Pied de Cochon!! I'm gonna see if I can make a reservation to come back this week ☺?View more
The experience failed to live up to the hype. Service was inconsistent from the start, with the appetizer arriving a full hour after we placed our order. The signature dishes were overly salted, & we left half of the duck untouched. Dessert was a cloyingly sweet caramel soup, lacking balance. Staff attributed the delays & missteps to the crowd & peak-hour rush. Even the bill took 15 minutes to arrive after we requested it.View more
Hello, with all the respect to the staff & hard working people involved in this restaurant.
I write this because a reputation like the one PDC has, the restaurant must've seen better days.
-The flavor of the oyster with quail eggs isn't memorable, cold oysters with mignonette is more enjoyable. Maybe temperature, seasoning, not special overall i don't know, it did not hit
- The poutine sauce is comparable to a regular gravy… it isn't recognizable by a distinct foie gras flavor, there is an opportunity there to make us eat FOIE GRAS POUTINE FROM PDC. Cooked foie gras was delicious
- temaki, It isn't exceptional, i could have a similar satisfaction from a mid sushi restaurant
- flétan, potatoes were almost the best part
- foie gras torchon, amazing with the sauce, amazing classic
- duck in a can, tough breast, maybe should be leg instead? I dont know
That, & i havent yet said that not a single dish came piping hot the way it should to make us customers feel good.
There must be revision of technique & maybe the menu items & portion sizes, presentation, to honor the glutinous & honorable quebecois cuisine influenced by the og chef. If the restaurant wants to party, make the crazy food make us want to partyyyyyyyyy!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!😍😍😍😍🤗🤗🤗🤗🤗😛😛😛😛
MORE PASSION CHEFS MORE LOVE & CRAZINESS IN THE FOOD 🤩🤩🤩🤩🤩 LETS GOOOOOOOOOOOOOView more
An outstanding bistro. Dishes with creativity & dedication to freshness & deliciousness. Must try Duck in a Can.
The staff are always busy & seemingly unorganised. But they did kept their smiles & zeal to serve.View more
Food, service, & vibes were truly top class here.
We came in for a date night dinner & initially ordered the Onion soup, Plogue à Champlain, & their Duck in a Can. However after we got our soup appetizer we saw something that caught our eye, a whole roast pork head! We asked the service staff about it & it turns out it was an off-menu special they had missed mentioning to us. They were flexible with us & let us cancel the rest of our order & order the special instead
The result was entirely too much food for 2 people but it was a wonderful experience carving into our meal & eating something so incredibly rich & succulent. The pigs head was prepared much like a Peking Duck & so the skin was incredibly crisp & crackly & the inside meat was rich & juicy. It came with a platter of chun bing(the wraps typically served with pecking duck), a variety of sauces, & julienned radish, cucumbers, & garlic chives.
Needless to say it was incredibly delicious & the staff was very enthusiastic about our enjoyment. Will absolutely be coming back with more friends as we'll need to bring extra mouths to help finish all this next time!View more
Amazing service from their crew, & the showmanship every time they explain to us the food was awesome! Everything was delicious, & thank god they have bread to wipe off all the sauce from the dishes we ordered coz you really need it!
Foie Gras Nigiri was to die for
Duck in a Can was ok, duck was a but tough but everything else inside including the foie gras was delish
The tripe was really soft & melts in your mouth
Stuffed Guinea Fowl was one of our faves because of the soft & flavourful meat & sauce
Grilled Char was also another fave thanks to the sauce & well cooked fishView more
We visited'Au pied de Cochon' with two friends & happily followed the lead of our host & shared most of the dishes. We enjoyed a bit-over-the-top but nevertheless scrumptious starters (duck temaki, fois gras nigiri & smoked trout) but the highlights were the mains: hearty the canned duck, tripes (esp. the way they were seasoned) & a light scallop quenelle - mouth-watering & sumptuous. Although I'm not much of a sweet tooth I was really happy with the restaurant's iteration of a typical Quebecois pudding emanating this hard to resist maple syrup aroma.
The service was outstanding, our hostess knew the menu backwards but didn't back out of sharing her personal favorites which made our choices easier (we were tempted by almost everything from the menu). All waiters & waitresses were bilingual.
A visit at'Pied de Cochon' was one of many highlights during our definitely too short stay in Montreal. Will happily visit again & again if only jumping over the pond would not take that much time.
Enjoy this gem of place!
PS I'd gladly write this review in French, but unfortunately my command of the language is much worse than of English. Then again another visit in'Au Pied de Cochon' is a great argument in re-learning French.View more
I planned my entire trip to Montreal around eating at this restaurant. When the border agent at YUL asked me for the purpose of my visit, I said'to eat at Au Pied de Cochon.' It is an institution. Extremely indulgent, excellently executed food in a convivial, unpretentious atmosphere. Cornish hen stuffed with sweetbreads in a foie gras buerre blanc sauce? Tamakis with raw quail egg & duck tartare? Who gets to eat like this?? The staff's pride in their food is evident, & they make sure you have a great time. I cannot say enough good things about this place. I left grinning like an idiot & slept through breakfast. The only problem with my night was that I was all alone on my birthday.View more
Absolutely phenomenal. I'll be back to try the rest of the menu. We got the Duck Temaki (10/10), Plogue a Champlain (a little too sweet for our palate but would make for a good dessert), Scallop Quenelle (light & delicious), & Plogue a Champlain (perfect). We sat at the bar overlooking the kitchen, which I quite liked. Service was impeccable.View more
Thanking the bartender that noticed my wife is pregnant & made her a mocktail without asking. In addition didn't charge for it. Thank you!
The aged pork chop & maple fries were great! I ate the duck in the can, but have mixed feelings about it. Bread pudding was good but a little too sweet for my liking.View more
Tough call! Overall amazing & great service! To be honest I really got worried when it started, one of the two entrée we had was kind of lame & tasteless (a kind of salad with cheese & pink ham slice, best part of it was the fried cappers) which for the price got me in a weird place for a first experience... (onion soup was pretty solid tho!) But then the main dish saved it... That Canned duck is sooooo goood & most definitely worth it! The porc Jarret was great but definitely not at the same level!View more
Duck in a can is one the the highly recommend dish. This one is a must try & I am amazed with the taste & texture of the dish. The Nigari is also an amazing mix&match dish I highly recommend anyone to try. Other than that staffs are nice & friendly. Highly recommended for anyone who come to Montreal.View more
We were greeted by very friendly staff. The server was very knowledgeable about the menu & wine list. He poured our wine for us but never returned to top up our glasses, leaving us to do this ourselves. The support staff were great about topping up our waters. We received our first dishes an hour after we ordered without any communication that they were running behind & our next round of food another 25 minutes after that. The restaurant did not seem busy enough to warrant this. The foie gras, sweet breads & maple sugar fries were excellent but the pork shank & duck in a can were quite greasy & heavy. The restaurant itself looked quite tired. The yelling & ringing of the bell when guests bought drinks for the kitchen was obnoxious & really took away from the atmosphere. Celebrating drinking on the job seemed out of place for a restaurant charging $40-50 a plate.View more
Incredible dinner from beginning to end. Server was on top of filling our glasses & staying close but not hovering. Food was delicious, my partner loved the duck in a can & I enjoyed the duck temaki & Guinea fowl. Dessert did not disappoint, though we were stuffed to bursting we powered through. We did however have a long wait between courses. I think either the kitchen was backed up or they waited to put our food in. Either way I didn't even notice at the time & it actually paced the meal nicely.View more
One of my most favorite meals I have ever had! Duck tartare, duck in a can, sweet bread are must orders. Service was also impeccable & I so very much enjoyed the conversation with my server. This is a must in Montreal!View more
Exceptional, as always! Chef Michael & his culinary team-- Spot on! A great off-menu mixed salad, again the duck tartare, presented in seaweed sheet-cone, & this time the Aged Grilled Pork Chop, & Ice Cream Profiteroles! All were both outstanding! Theo's cocktails & service were outstanding! Thanks everybody!View more
Second time here comming from Toronto. Everything I ate except the oysters ad foie gras, & that's a good thing, you can't not eat foie & come here. Everything was amazing couldn't get enough of the foie nigiri, the terrine was amazing with the maple butter. Finally tried the duck in a can. Although I did not have the foie poutine this year, I highly recommend that to. The dessert, pouring chomeur, was great. PIck the add cheddar & foie option it's a great pairing between sweet & savory. This place never disappoints & I will be back next year again, I need to try everything on the menu.View more
Everyone says you must get the canned duck here but I must say I was more blown away by the foie gras profiteroles! We also really liked the duck tartare temaki. While the canned duck was great for a video/photo, I felt that the foie gras in the small plates tasted better & some parts of the canned duck were just way too fatty for me. If I came back I'd order a bunch of the profiteroles.View more
May have gotten a five. Honestly, we chose plats main unwisely. We should have order the Duck in a Can & the Pork Shank, which the people next to us got & both looked amazing.View more
If you love meat but are tired of the barbequeue & steakhouse tropes, this is it. Duck in a can is a must, recommend any of the pork dishes. Was hoping the foie gras dumplings would be on the menu but it wasn't. Fantastic cocktails, recommend the moji-pho if you like spice. Our server was great, we asked to be seated outside but got moved inside once it got cold. Limited dessert selection if you don't like maple, but still very good.View more
