I went in with mixed expectations, as I know that the border between indulgent QC fare & tourist trap can be muddled. I am so happy with what we got. An attentive but not overbearing service & dishes mostly on the memorable side. Highlights: foie gras terrine to moan for, great duck tartare, & all the mains: great halibut, otrageous & delicious stuffed pig hoof (a beast of a dish) & delicious pork sirloin. Great use of seasonal mushrooms. Desserts were moreish even after the generous portions of the pork mains.
Less impressive: the foie gras nigiri was taken over by the ponzu sauce, & the razor clams were not uniform in cooking but eh, still nice.
Recommended for whoever is looking for Quebecoise indulgence as advertised by that Bourdain documentary. I am sure there are other venues that provide it, but this one is accessible & its reputation is justified. Stick to seafood if fat turns you off.View more

We spent some days in Montreal & tried some great restaurants, including this one. The food is very good, some aspects might be improved (my pork was a bit too dry) but in general very satisfying.
We just felt the service is not on point with the price & kind of offer of this place. We had to order bread 3 times & feels like the waiters are not so experienced. Would be perfect for a pub / easy going restaurant, but probably not enough professional for this kind of restaurant.
In general a good experience tho!View more

(french version bellow)
I had dinner at Pied de Cochon with my wife. I chose this restaurant because I'd heard about it often &, according to reviews, it seemed to be one of Montreal's most reputable spots. The atmosphere is pleasant, & the service is very attentive-perhaps even a bit too intense. You take a sip of wine, & a server rushes over to refill your glass. On that front, I have no complaints.

From a gastronomic standpoint, it was very good. So why am I taking off two stars? Well, I might have been a little disillusioned. I expected to eat like a king-or a pig, given the name!-but honestly, if I hadn't ordered an appetizer, I'd have left the place still hungry. For my main course, I had the aged pork ribs: they were delicious, but the few slices served with a small piece of cabbage & some charred bits of bread left me wanting more. It felt like something was missing. At that price, they could've offered more sides, a big basket of bread, or a more generous portion of meat. It seemed like I was eating an appetizer disguised as a main course.

My wife ordered the tripe. It was good, but it came without any sides-just a drizzle of oil & a big chunk of Parmesan. The bottle of wine fortunately helped us enjoy the vibe, but we left the restaurant having liked the experience while feeling a bit let down by not being full.

View more

Food, service, & vibes were truly top class here.

We came in for a date night dinner & initially ordered the Onion soup, Plogue à Champlain, & their Duck in a Can. However after we got our soup appetizer we saw something that caught our eye, a whole roast pork head! We asked the service staff about it & it turns out it was an off-menu special they had missed mentioning to us. They were flexible with us & let us cancel the rest of our order & order the special instead

The result was entirely too much food for 2 people but it was a wonderful experience carving into our meal & eating something so incredibly rich & succulent. The pigs head was prepared much like a Peking Duck & so the skin was incredibly crisp & crackly & the inside meat was rich & juicy. It came with a platter of chun bing(the wraps typically served with pecking duck), a variety of sauces, & julienned radish, cucumbers, & garlic chives.

Needless to say it was incredibly delicious & the staff was very enthusiastic about our enjoyment. Will absolutely be coming back with more friends as we'll need to bring extra mouths to help finish all this next time!View more

Food was excellent. Our favorite being the class foie gras dish from the foie gras part of the menu. The scallop & pork chop dishes from the main courses were also delicious. They accommodated our kids by putting sauces on the side. Cocktails & wine were also delicious. We had a wonderful experience.View more

Thanking the bartender that noticed my wife is pregnant & made her a mocktail without asking. In addition didn't charge for it. Thank you!

The aged pork chop & maple fries were great! I ate the duck in the can, but have mixed feelings about it. Bread pudding was good but a little too sweet for my liking.View more

We were greeted by very friendly staff. The server was very knowledgeable about the menu & wine list. He poured our wine for us but never returned to top up our glasses, leaving us to do this ourselves. The support staff were great about topping up our waters. We received our first dishes an hour after we ordered without any communication that they were running behind & our next round of food another 25 minutes after that. The restaurant did not seem busy enough to warrant this. The foie gras, sweet breads & maple sugar fries were excellent but the pork shank & duck in a can were quite greasy & heavy. The restaurant itself looked quite tired. The yelling & ringing of the bell when guests bought drinks for the kitchen was obnoxious & really took away from the atmosphere. Celebrating drinking on the job seemed out of place for a restaurant charging $40-50 a plate.View more

We couldn't leave Montreal before trying this institution. We did not know to expect & tried to cultivate as much hunger as we could due to the warnings of extremely rich food. Let me say that the food is obviously quite rich but it is not unbalanced in any way. We had the oysters to begin with; they were fine but that's it, I think I wouldn't order them again as they were not so flavorful. We also tried the foie gras poutine that was very very good, opulent, not overly salted & addictive. Only thing is that maybe there could've been a few more fries there. To finish we had the aged pork chop that was properly sized & so so easy to eat, super tender, well grilled & it's perfect with its jus at the bottom also to have along the poutine. At the end of the meal we were really satisfied & didn't feel nasty full. I must mention that the wine list is very well made, concise & with great French wines but also a very well represented North American section. It was our final meal in a 4 night food trip to Montreal so maybe that influenced that we did not have a huge appetite. Cannot wait to go back & repeat.View more

If you love meat but are tired of the barbequeue & steakhouse tropes, this is it. Duck in a can is a must, recommend any of the pork dishes. Was hoping the foie gras dumplings would be on the menu but it wasn't. Fantastic cocktails, recommend the moji-pho if you like spice. Our server was great, we asked to be seated outside but got moved inside once it got cold. Limited dessert selection if you don't like maple, but still very good.View more

I'm torn because this is some of the best food I have ever had in my life. The only problem is everything else such as the service & atmosphere was really, really, bad. Starting off with the good, the food here was amazing. Every single dish that we ordered blew our minds off. I'm not sure if they change their menu but I highly recommend the sweetbread, duck temaki, plogue a champlain, pork shank, & the salt & maple sugar fries. It was my second time having sweetbread & this was sooooo delicious. The duck temaki was the perfect ratio of rice & other ingredients. I loved the uniqueness of pouring your own yolk out of a small quail egg. The plogue a champlain came with a huge serving of foie gras & was amazing. I had nothing bad to say about any of the food we ate today. Definitely the best food we have had in Montreal so far! This is why it was so disappointing that I could not say the same about the service & restaurant itself. First, the tables at the back are super crammed. I could not get into my seat because the guy at the table besides me was literally touching my chair. Another patron saw me struggling & him & his wife moved my table forward for me just so I could sit down! Then when my mom sat in her chair, the lady at the table behind her came back from the washroom & couldn't get into her seat! She ranted something in French which I'm assuming wasn't positive about the tight space situation. When we first sat down we were greeted by a really nice server who was helpful & gave us great food suggestions. But then he rarely came back to check on us. I wanted to tell him how amazing the food was except, he never asked once we finished our courses! When I turned around I saw him bartending at the bar, so maybe he was both the server & bartender for the night? Maybe the restaurant was short staffed? I don't know, but the service was disappointing. So yes, my wine glass sat empty on the table & no one bothered to ask me if I would like another drink. When we finished our pitcher of water, another server took it away but didn't bring us a new one. When our water glasses sat empty for some time, I finally asked someone for another pitcher of water. & then, the strangest thing happened during the middle of dinner, where a guy took a Swiffer duster & started dusting the vents on top of everyone's heads while we were eating!! Me & a girl at the table across from me gave eachother a "what the F" look because we were bewildered they would not wait until later to do this? & I don't know why, but they kept trying to serve us other people's food!! Lol! This one poor guy brought us three dishes that weren't ours. So this is why I'm torn. I would absolutely die for the food here but I just wish the service was better.View more

Excited to score a counter reservation here on our first night in Montreal & we were not disappointed! There's a real buzz & energy to the place & staff are super-friendly. There were so many specials on offer that it was difficult to remember them all; a blackboard or printed slip of paper would have been helpful. Sitting at the counter was fun but our seats did keep getting knocked by both guests & staff so be prepared for this if you sit here! Food was outstanding, particularly the foie gras profiteroles & aged pork chop. A couple of dishes surprised us by not being what we'd expected from the menu description, for example a'scallops' dish in fact being a kind of mousse. We were pleasantly surprised at what good value the meal was for such high-quality cooking.View more

We came mainly for Pork & foie gras. Everything was beyond our expectations. Servers were all very attentive. Chefs worked so hard & even interacted with customers occasionally. Respect & kudos to one of the most solid teams we've ever seen! (P.S: you may want to reserve enough time on the road if you are traveling by car. We spent too much time on finding a parking spot & arrived 20 minutes late. Otherwise we would definitely want to try a dessert!)View more

This place! It was everything I hoped it was going to be. The food was KILLER, so much foie gras was consumed! The scallop dish was bursting with fresh flavours! The terrine was perfectly seasoned, & the maple butter was otherworldly with it! I'm a sucker for sweetbreads, & these did not disappoint. Not tough, just the right amount of fatty goodness! The pork chop was delicious, there was a very minor issue with the cook on it, which was promptly addressed & fixed! The service was absolutely impeccable!! I think the unexpected star of the show for.me was the guinea fowl ballontine! I found myself.picking up the leg & chewing all the meat off lol The duck tartare was another surprise hit! A first for me, the quail egg was a perfect sauce for this sushi inspired dish. The beignets were delicious little warm puffs of happiness, & the foie gras/white cheddar sticky pudding was unlike anything I've ever had. Sweet maple, sharp cheddar, & savory foie gras all melded together to make an outstanding & unforgettable dish. I would come back solely for this dish, but I can guarantee it wouldn't be the only one I'd order! Thank you for an evening that will not soon be forgotten!View more

My boyfriend took me here for my birthday dinner & just wow. We've been to our fair share of Montreal fine dining, & this was my favorite experience I've had yet. Both the food & atmosphere were incredible, I can't recommend this restaurant enough if you really want to impress your date, or just have a delicious meal full of complexity. It's hard to get a table, but 100% worth it. I can't wait to be back. Now for the details... Our waiter was fantastic in recommending which dishes to get. For appetizer, we tried their special of the night, which was uni, as well as duck tartare. The presentation/mode of delivery of both was phenomenal! The duck tartare was served in a nori wrap cone & had a quail egg yolk we got to pour in ourselves! The uni came in its shell & had a delicious, creamy sauce that was full of complexity. Then we split a creamy corn chanterelle (another special) & the pork shank, per our servers recommendation. I've never had pork this tender falling off the bone before! I was very impressed. As for the corn, it was one of the best dishes I've ordered at any Montreal restaurant, period. Which makes sense because we're deep into corn & chanterelle season, & you could tell they were both super fresh. I was a little worried that sharing only one main wouldn't be enough, but the portions are very sizable, especially with appetizers. For dessert, we tried the pouding chômeur with foie gras & cheddar. The savory salty strong flavor of foie gras complemented the sweet caramel so well in a way I was not expecting.View more

Good food in a nice restaurant is expected. Perhaps we even take it for granted. Infrequently you are absorbed by the whole experience, from the welcome greeting, the atmosphere, all the way to the conversations - before your tastebuds are awaken! The team of professionals from the front of house to the kitchen staff is just exceptional. Then came the food: the poutine with lobster gravy & the shrimps - we jumped on to that offering as their special, before we even looked at the menu. We had the foie gras nigiri - don't judge me - I am well aware of the animal welfare arguments & I would normally abstain from it. However the concept of peanut butter & foie gras with nigiri rice was so out there, I just fell victim to the intrigue. It did exactly that. I was knocked out of the park, the city, the planet! Who would have thought?!! I live in the UK & we refer to the "humble" shepherds pie - but let's just say there is nothing humble about this shepherds pie! The beef cheeks, pork neck & the ground pork (or minced if you are a Brit), in a rich sauce, covered by a cheesy infused mash potato topping - served with a homemade ketchup that cuts through the gravy - I can only say - OMG! The best thing is the portions are not nouveau! That's just not my thing. The experience was enhanced because of the team - Alex, Annabelle & Omar! It isn't cheap, but it's an experience that will last a lifetime. Bon appétit!View more

Au Pied de Cochon was our first stop in our visit to Montreal & it blew us away. It is a lively, busy spot, with great service & incredible food. Every dish we ordered is worth highlighting. Seasonal Tomato Soup: They had a few specials & we ordered most of them, including this dish. The soup was creamy & rich, with a bit of a fresh bite from the peppers. It was served on top of mushrooms, radish, & ceviche. Burrata on Sourdough: I cannot rave about this dish enough. The Burrata was described as being so fresh that it "never touched a fridge". I'm not sure it beats some of the burrata we've had in Italy, but good grief does it come close. The sourdough had a wonderful sourness to it that worked really well with the burrata. The caviar on top was a nice addition but honestly the other ingredients outshine it. Duck Tamaki: The presentation on this dish is almost as good as it tastes. The drizzle of egg on top of the duck was such a fun addition & it all tasted wonderful. Foie Nigiri: I'll be honest, I've had a lot of bad foie gras lately. It seems like many places take a slab of it, char it for ten seconds & then give you a cold lump of meat with bizarre textures. Because of this I was hesitant to order this dish, but it was highly recommended by other reviewers. & wow, we were blown away. It's always such a great experience when a (rather unassuming) place just executes a perfect little dish & gets you to change your mind about food. Mapo Tufo with Foie Gras: More foie gras. This is certainly not an authentic take on Mapo Tofu, & I would have liked a bit more heat/mala in the dish. But the pork sauce had an almost ragu-ness to it that was very tasty. & the foie was creamy & delicious. Seasonal Corn Dish: Another special, served with lobster mushrooms. Was a wonderfully refreshing end to the meal. Seasonal Cucumber drink: It they have this when you're there, get one, or two, or three. So refreshing & the perfect drink on what was an incredibly hot day. Don't forget to pick out the cucumber piece & eat it.View more

Came here after having it suggested to me a few times. We made a reservation about a week in advance & just managed to get one at 9:30 on a Saturday, so if you're planning on coming to this restaurant I would suggest booking farther ahead of time. Our server was top class, her drink & food recommendations were based on her extensive knowledge of the menu & we appreciated that so much. The food was incredibly rich & had many complimentary flavours - the foie gras terrine with the maple butter being a standout in that regard. The oysters were perfectly balanced & fresh, & the beef tongue was decadent. For our mains, we ordered the pork shank & the duck in a can. Both were fantastic. The only complaint I have is that the food is a bit too rich, & we definitely would've benefited from some more vegetables (unfortunately they were sold out of the charred lettuce appetizer by the time we had got in). If you're looking for an authentic Quebecois meal while in Montreal, this is the place!View more

Traveling from Alberta, we were recommended to try Au Pied de Cochons by three Montrealers to get a Quebecois experience. We splurged for an anniversary meal & ate duck tamaki, foie gras poutine, aged pork chop, & a special, the shrimp roll. It was too much food for only two of us. In retrospect, we could've split a main course. Everything we ate was rich, flavorful, & delicious. We left with full bellies & a fun experience watching the kitchen do its thing. The service was top notch. Definitely recommend but come hungry!View more

We ordered the Duck Tamaki, the Foie gras nigiri, the pork chops & the duck in a can. I was a bit disappointed by the food. The appetizers were mediocre & the mains came out cold. I recently dined at Pied de Cochon & was quite disappointed with the experience. The nigiri, which used to come with six pieces, has been reduced to four, & the tamaki was nothing special. Our first visit to Au Pied de Cochon will not be our last. Despite a frantic & stressful atmosphere, the courteous staff & delicious food made it a memorable experience, reminiscent of a local Montreal pub. We had a 9 pm bar reservation, where we witnessed the sous chef & cooks skillfully prepare our Quebec fusion dishes. The wait staff ensured we were well-hydrated & comfortable, navigating us through the tight restaurant space to the discreet bathroom doors between the bars. The specialty of the day, the shrimp roll topped with melted foie gras & a sweet balsamic reduction, was incredible & our favorite dish. We hope it becomes a main menu item. We also enjoyed the foie gras nigiri, rotolo, & aged pork chop with a side of maple salted fries. While all dishes were rich, fresh, & hearty, the shrimp roll & fries stood out for us. Despite some reviews claiming Au Pied de Cochon is overrated or past its prime, we strongly recommend it to both tourists & locals for an elevated Québécois dining experience.View more

We began with a glass of wine & three appetizers - scallops with basil & melon, the blue cheese salad, & the potato au gratin cheddar & bacon fois gras plate. All were exceptional & delicious & better than expected. Next, we had the Fois Gras Nigiri which was eaten fast but each bite was savored-a great portion, too! Our main course was next! We got the halibut, duck in a can, & the pork shank. All the portions were great however, the pork shank was more than enough, & we didn't finish that sadly. Although it was scrumptious. The sauce that accompanied it was delicious & so were the lentils. The halibut was fresh surrender by seasonal vegetables & caught in the wild. The duck in the can was consistent & delicious & is one of the staples on the menu, you can't go wrong here. Dessert was the traditional Quebec maple bread pudding which I could've had seconds! It's the best dessert you can get in the province of Quebec especially if you're a maple fiend like we are.
