The sushi here is fantastic! Amazing presentation, amazing flavor, & you can get aged kanpachi which is one of my faves. Even though I typically just get nigiri & sashimi, we did try one of their rolls & it was also of amazing quality.
However the atmosphere is not at all what we're used to in Japan & California--it's a weird mashup of European formal & Japanese. The lighting is dark & the atmosphere quiet.
Sitting at the sushi bar is NOT like what sitting at the sushi bar is supposed to be. There is no interaction with the sushi chefs, even though they are right there. & we had to order from a waiter by the nature of sitting at the sushi bar, stood behind us--which makes for an odd, detached experience.
All that said, it is the best nigiri & sashimi I've been able to find in Montreal so far.

Amazing experience, the service was amazing. Our server & bartender were knowledgeable & attentive & great to chat with. I had the aged premium chefs choice sashimi & the chefs choice nigiri; along with a few of the premium nigiri options. Well worth the price tag, an overall exceptional experience all around. I'm a huge cocktail & sushi enthusiast; The bartender explained some of his signature cocktails & i was very pleased by the drinks provided, they were creative & delicious. Our server was helpful giving us ideas of places to explore in the city & was very friendly. The fish quality & freshness, presentation, timing of plates & courses, & atmosphere left nothing to be desired!
This is, without a doubt, the best sushi experience I've ever had & not just in Canada.
I've tried countless premium sushi spots across different countries, & Hidden Fish still stands at the very top for me.
I first visited about a year ago & returned again this week, & the quality has remained exactly the same: absolute perfection. Not even the slightest drop.
From the moment you walk in, the experience is thoughtful. The hostess is warm, very welcoming, & genuinely engaging.
The ambiance & interior strike a perfect balance, refined & elegant, yet comfortable. It feels luxurious without being intimidating or pretentious.
The service continues to impress throughout. The staff know the menu inside out. Even when simply shown a picture, they can immediately identify the dishes. They also give precise, thoughtful recommendations that are actually spot on. They're attentive, quick, & efficient, yet never rushed. Friendly, but with just the right level of professionalism & boundaries.
& then, the food.
The nigiri are truly out of this world! Each piece feels like a complete journey. It starts with one flavor & sensation, evolves midway into something new, & finishes with a lingering final note. It's incredible how much depth & progression can exist in a single bite.
The wagyu was the best I've ever had! You can literally taste the quality. It's not just good, it's craftsmanship at its highest level.
The sashimi & maki are equally exceptional. With this place, there's no risk of ordering the wrong thing. Every dish delivers. Nothing feels average or forgettable.
Wonderful resto for a date night or any kind of celebration. Service is always excellent. Their sashimi is exceptional, a must try. Sushi rolls are non traditional & are on the pricey side. Desserts aren't very strong. Expect to pay 150$+ per person.
An absolute must try for anyone looking to experience incredible fine dining sushi from start to finish!
We've come multiple times already & can NOT recommend this establishment enough to all of our friends & family! Food is indescribable & melt in your mouth. Rey served us & suggested dishes that were out of this world: the salmon noodles, crab salad, premium selection of sashimi & our absolute fave, Nobunaga.
All the best to the team of Hidden Fish for their amazing service! Can't wait to keep coming back again & again!
An absolutely beautiful sushi spot with an elegant atmosphere. The chefs are Japanese, & you can truly taste the authenticity & craftsmanship in every dish. The menu offers a great selection of different dishes. We had sashimi & maki rolls. Everything was fantastic. Maki had unique combinations & were perfectly balanced & delicious. Plating was beautiful. A wonderful place for a special evening or simply to enjoy high-quality, beautifully prepared sushi.
A Masterclass in Culinary Orchestration & Hospitality
Visiting from out of town, my son & I were searching for a definitive sushi experience in Montreal. From the moment we stepped into Hidden Fish, we were met with a level of hospitality that was as immediate as it was genuine. Despite not having a reservation, we were welcomed without hesitation & seated at the sushi bar, the best seats in the house to witness Executive Chef Haruo & his team operate like a finely tuned orchestra.
While the entire staff was exceptional, our primary server, Matthew, was instrumental in making the evening perfect. He ensured every detail was attended to with grace, striking the ideal balance between professional attentiveness & warm engagement. Under his care, the service flowed seamlessly, allowing us to focus entirely on the culinary artistry.
The precision of the kitchen is matched only by the complexity of the flavors. Several'movements' in this performance were particularly standout:
Hokkaido Scallop Sashimi: A delicate balance of textures where the Miyoga & Ikura provided a sophisticated brightness against the Tosazu dressing.
Miyazaki A5 Wagyu Tataki: Truly exceptional. The roasted garlic & garlic-ginger BBQ sauce enhanced the richness of the A5 beef without overshadowing its quality.
Chutoro Nigiri: A masterstroke of simplicity & melt-in-your-mouth texture.
Salmon Gravlax Maki: A highlight of creative engineering with salmon marinated with beetroot. The combination of Kizami Wasabi, fried onion, & Akazu vinegar rice created a complex, multi-layered sensory experience.
Chef Haruo & his masterful team, anchored by Matthew's outstanding service, have created a venue where technical excellence meets heartfelt hospitality. This wasn't just a meal; it was a sensory experience that outshone any sushi encounter we've had before. We will be returning to Montreal specifically to sit at this bar again.
Petit souper d'anniversaire, on c'est installé vers 19:00 à notre table.

Sashimi, they put too much seasoning on top, lacked the original flavor of fish,. the Hokkaido Uni is my favourite , .but the taste of Hokkaido Uni sometimes it is good , sometimes it is not good ……I hope I will win the' lottery' next time
First time weary traveler from Nunavut. I thought we had fresh caught ocean fishes but I was dead wrong. Ordered the Chef's Sashimi Specials (12) Pieces Combo. Everything melted in my mouth. So sweet. So succulents. Presentation was like Miss Universe Pageant. & of course the Sapporo beer was good too. ❤?🍣❤?🍣❤?
I had heard about this place from a friend & it was fully booked unfortunately. I did manage to come on a Sunday for dinner. It was still fairly busy, only 2 tables available.
I have to say I don't have any idea how they have such a high review. This is likely the most overhyped & overpriced sushi I've had.
The opposite of what I would call a luxury dining experience.
The first thing I'll say is the decor actually is quite nice. & the hostess was super friendly & kind & seated us quick. There was a more spacious table available & without us asking she came & asked if we wanted to change to a bigger table. We did. That's more or less where the better part of the experience ended.
Despite it being Sunday & not super busy when we went as nobody was seated after us, we didn't see the waiter for about 20 minutes. The manager who was standing about 3 meters away & watching didn't notice we hadn't been served water or asked for our drink order.
Eventually I did flag down a waiter & asked him if I could order. He said he would take out drink order but the food had to be with our server. I ordered a bottle of sake & asked him to flag our waiter for us. After 10 more minutes no one came & no drink so I flagged down another waiter to get ours. We again ordered a bottle of sake as the first hadn't been put in & some appetizers & sushi & rolls.
When I asked him to repeat our food order he had missed a roll. So I told him again. 15 mins later some food came out but still no drinks. So I flagged him down again & he asked me to repeat which drinks we wanted then said there was an error in the system & they would bring it out ASAP. As we had ordered a fair bit of food they put our sake bottle on ice away from the table, which at first seemed like a good idea, however our waiter never came back to refill our sake. From our MIA bottle. So we eventually finished the food & then I literally got up & moved our own sake bottle to the table. Waiter was quite surprised at the end when I asked for the bill & the bottle was empty as he even said he didn't remember pouring us the sake; which he didn't.
As for the food, the sashimi was okay, but overpriced & nothing to write home about. The rolls were a bit too salty for the most part, even without any soya sauce.
The exceptions: unagi house specialty roll was great & probably our favorite. The roll topped with crab was also quite good. But everything else was pretty below par.
Scallop roll with truffle was so mild in flavour I didn't even know there was truffle on it. The hamachi signature roll was a bit salty which kind of mafe it a bit overpowering.
At the end again was a struggle to get service for dessert so we just got our bill.
Definitely can't recommend this place & wouldn't go back. Again no clue how it seems to be highly rated or reviewed.
I have sushi weekly & there's way better sushi & value & just couldn't recommend hidden fish despite the hype.

Finally found a sushi place with great ambiance. The sushi & sashimi were fresh, high quality with great flavors. It's a nice spot that I'd definitely go back to.
i used to be such a hidden fish hater cuz i tried it a few yrs ago & it was so boring but i finally went again last week & it was AMAZING.
everything we ordered was so delicious. salmon noodles, ora king salmon sashimi, chef choice nigiri set, & their special at the time, this ankimo maki (monkfish liver) was seriously incredible. every bite was big MMM moment. super fresh, super interesting mix of ingredients.
I recently visited this sushi restaurant & had a mixed experience overall. The ambiance was a definite highlight-stylish, relaxing, & perfect for a date night.
In terms of food, it was a bit hit-or-miss. The otoro nigiri stood out as exceptional-buttery, fresh, & beautifully presented. Comparable to ones I've had in Japan. Unfortunately, the sashimi was underwhelming, lacking the flavor & texture you'd expect at this price point. The maki rolls were decent but enjoyable enough.
The main drawback was the slow service. While the staff was polite, the wait times between courses felt too long, especially for a Monday night. The server also didn't bring soy sauce or wasabi/ginger the entire night.
Final verdict: Come for the ambiance & the otoro, but manage your expectations on the rest of the menu & service speed.
So happy I discovered hidden fish because it is by far the best Sushi in Montreal. It is a vibrant yet cozy spot with an extensive & authentic Japanese menu. There was not one menu item ordered that lacked flavour or tasted generic. Each roll & sashimi ordered was unique & presentation was spot on. A must visit spot.
