Soup Zen Hot Pot offers a self service, pay by weight concept with a wide range of fresh ingredients and broths, a sauce bar and complimentary ice cream, plus halal and gluten free options, delivering customizable bowls that many guests find tasty, satisfying, and generously portioned; the experience is popular for its fun, interactive setup and friendly atmosphere, but crowds and long waits can be challenging, service can be inconsistent, and some feel the final price can add up quickly, especially when heavier ingredients are chosen.
Pretty standard build-your-own hotpot location. Bright & spacious, with a unique earthy palette. They have more unique offerings than most places, like smoked duck breast, fried egg, & zig-zag-cut fried tofu.
I got the tomato broth, it had strong tomato flavours, but was very one-note. I needed to add complexity to it at the sauce bar, which in contrast, had limited options.
They give everybody ube ice cream at the end, it was very pleasant, rich, creamy, with strong ube notes.

The concept is awesome & the food was good overall - However - while there are vegan options, the tofu tasted fishy, which was off-putting (probably because people use the same tongs for getting different ingredients)
The mushroom broth had very little flavor, but I look forward to trying the tomato broth next time.
I do wish they cut the ingredients smaller so that they cooked a bit more. The harder veggies like carrots & broccoli are still hard
Food: Fresh ingredients & decent broth, with lots of variety.
Cultural issue: This isn't really hotpot in the traditional sense. What Soup Zen serves is much closer to Chinese málàtàng - a Sichuan street food style where you pick your ingredients & they're cooked in spicy broth & served individually. Hotpot, by contrast, is a shared, communal meal. The restaurant markets everything as'hotpot' &'Asian fusion' without ever acknowledging malatang or Sichuan origins, which feels like a missed opportunity & a flattening of culture.
Atmosphere: The interior is styled more like a European café than an Asian eatery. It doesn't match the cuisine's roots & makes the experience feel more like a concept restaurant than something tied to its heritage.
Overall: Good food, but I'd like to see Soup Zen respect the distinction between hotpot & malatang & give proper credit to its Chinese/Sichuan roots. Some cultural acknowledgment & more fitting decor would go a long way.
I ate at Soup Zen after running the Beneva Marathon & it was perfect. I sat at the bar, the reception offered me a free drink, but I forgot to mention it to the cashier. So if you are eating alone, sit at the bar & let the cashier know. The food was great & hit the spot after a long run.

Bel ambiance.
Amazing hot pot with many options. A huge selection of seafood, mushrooms, meats. A bit pricey if you go overboard with your selection so watch the weight of your pot. The service is truly amazing. The icing on the cake? Its halal!
Absolutely delicious & well worth the price. Overall ambiance & quality of food & soup is high! Love this addition to Montreal, we drove from Ottawa to visit this place in particular. Only thing we wish for is that there would be chicken & beef dumplings in addition to the seafood dumplings. Other than that we were very happy!
Was super excited to try this new pay-by-the-weight style hot pot & saw how people were lining up for it like crazy.
It's mediocre at best. Nothing special or new when it comes to hot pot, yet it's always so busy! Soup's kinda bland & lacks seasoning, but for the price point & different ingredients & soup options, not too bad.
I'd rather go to a more pricier & better quality hotpot restaurant, than here; just because the waiting line (waitlist) & service isn't really worth it for the food (imo).
