If you are looking for an establishment that truly captures the essence of'culinary tragedy' wrapped in a trendy, hipster veneer, then Satay Brothers on Notre-Dame is an absolute must-visit. It is truly a marvel of modern gastronomy-if your idea of dining is being served by people who seem to have taken a solemn vow of silence regarding flavor profiles.
?I approached this place with the foolish optimism that perhaps, just once, the hype might be justified. Instead, I was treated to a masterclass in how to ruin perfectly good ingredients.
?The chicken satay was a revelation, provided your definition of a revelation is discovering how much gristle, fat, & despair one can pack onto a wooden skewer. It was a texture-less abyss of oily dark meat-or what I assume was meat, though I've seen more structural integrity in a wet napkin. & the peanut sauce? Calling it bland is an insult to the word. A jar of store-bought, off-brand crunchy peanut butter possesses more depth, complexity, & soul than whatever beige, lifeless emulsion they dared to serve.
?& then, the'famous' pork bun. The only thing famous about it is the sheer audacity required to charge money for such a pathetic, uninspired excuse for street food. It is the perfect meal for someone who has never ventured beyond the comfortable radius of their own driveway & thinks a dash of soy sauce constitutes'international cuisine.' Having actually lived in Vietnam & Thailand, I can confirm: I have encountered street food in a literal sewer that possessed more authentic flavor than what I was served here.
?The grand finale was the garlic bok choy-or rather, the limp, morose pile of chlorophyll-deficient sludge that arrived at the table. It was clearly harvested, cooked, & then abandoned under a heat lamp during the dawn of time. A gray, flaccid mess topped with a'garlic' so aggressively jarred & devoid of character that I suspect the kitchen staff keeps a jar of garlic-scented sawdust on hand just to avoid the strenuous labor of peeling a fresh clove.
?If you have even one lingering shred of culinary integrity, do yourself a favor: stay home, eat a piece of dry toast, & save your money. It will be the most sophisticated meal you have all day.
The best baos I've had!! Service is fast & the food is so good. I had the soup with bok Choi & my friends the one with coconut milk. We also had baos & fried chicken. Everything 10/10
I will definitively go back for baos
Been there several times over a decade, love the food but recently find it not as tasty as before, especially when it is a group of 6 by reservation & served for testing menus (fixed menu, no choice)
Papaya salad, laksa soup & fatty pork bun weren't as good as remembered (not as tasty)
A little disappointed 😞
chicken & shrimp brochettes are always the best!
Seafood chow-mein was surprisingly good 👍
$600/6 people after taxes is what you're expecting (alcohol+taxes including)
I have an incredible experience! The staff were nice & welcoming & even went out of their way to explain certain menu items, the overall decor is inviting & full of colour, & the food (the reason why we were there) was the star of the show: the fried chicken & pulled pork sandwiches were out of the world, & the fried rice du jour was oh so delicious! Definitely a must do again in my next visit to Montréal!
11/10 experience. Hands down the best meal I've had in a while. Everything was so flavourful & the service was excellent. MUST HAVE the papaya salad, pork belly bao buns, & coconut mango black rice dessert. The chicken skewers & shrimp fried rice were great as well.
Possibly the most overhyped restaurant in Montreal. My laksa soup was almost cold, & just really not good??? they also got the order wrong (brought it to me without chicken, as was ordered). My friend's order was inedible & when we reluctantly mentioned it to them, they wouldnt do anything about it. The service by someone who was possibly the owner was rude. Don't understand the hype & won't be going back to try!
Thought I had covid when I ate the chicken laksa because it tasted like water down version of a laksa that you can get in Asia. The food presentation looked right/fine, portions were small-yish (got chicken satay as well) but there was no flavor. If you are going to be charging $19 for a small bowl of chicken laksa, you'd better get the flavor right. So $19 + $11 for 3 satay skewers with not that good of a taste plus tips & taxes, it's over $30 for flavorless food that you will go hungry again in 30-60 minutes, what are you even doing?
Pretty good food. Some items were salty like the sauce on the bao & some, like the garlic sautéed snow pea leaves were under seasoned. Laksa with chicken was good too but didn't have the depth & creaminess I was looking for.
A really intimate well-lit gorgeous restaurant on Notre-Dame 🎉🎉 We particularly loved the way beer cans are hung next to the light & gives off a very hippy bohemian vibe 😇😇 We started off with Jasmin Tea & beer & then moved onto Chicken satay that was incredible ❤?❤? For the main meal I had the chicken Laksha soup while my partner had lamb with rice & each bite was a gourmet's delight 🎉🎉 Our full compliments to the chef for the delicacy & also the staff that gave very good recommendations 😇😇 Finally for dessert we had the buttermilk cake & it was a heavenly delight 🎉🎉 Highly recommend this 11/10 restaurant with fantastic staff & service & we can't wait to try other items on the menu next time 🙏🙏
Top notch!!!!
Kway Teow was so flavourful with good wok hei flavours. Chicken satay skewers were crispy on the outside & tender meat, & that peanut sauce on the side was scrumptious. Garlic veggies were delicious. Our server was super friendly & approachable, generously gave us a piece of kueh bengka to finish our meal to celebrate a birthday. Kueh bengka was moist & the coconut flavours weren't overpowering. If i'm ever in the city again, definitely going out of my way to come back!!
