The food was to die for. Highly highly recommend this place. I can't speak to the dancing just yet because we didn't realize it started at 10, but we will definitely be back to eat & check it out.
I had the beef (melt in your mouth) & the yozu sake & also tried the chicken naname (I think that's how it spelled) & the duck & all were delicious.
A space for all the senses, sounds of the underground & supreme service. Sans Soleil has everything under the sun for true music lovers, artists, the heads, the curious, locals & visitors alike. Had a beautiful Saturday night sojourn here that began with an amazing meal. We had the Onsen Tamago (perfect egg in a truffle infused broth), Legume Ohitashi (vegetable of the day was eggplant), Albacore tuna tataki & the delicious fried chicken dish. The Yune cocktail was a yuzu-infused take on the negroni -divine! - & Sake Paloma was bright & refreshing. Service was excellent - super big shout out to Andie for their amazing hospitality, kindness & menu suggestions (the team here knows a lot!), & Alex at the bar for awesome libations. We tried the special soy ice cream dessert -umami, sweet, savoury goodness! Not enough photos, was too immersed in the experience. Stick around for dancing & top shelf tunes curated & spun by guest & resident selectors. As a DJ myself, I'd be a regular here if I lived in Montreal.
We were seated at the bar & had the wonderful company of the bartender. He was knowledgeable & had great recommendations for the saké. Very welcoming without being nosy. The food was excellent, we had the agedashi tofu & chirashi sushi. An authentic & elevated rendition of japanese cuisine. Great overall experience
Upstairs: Stylish & upscale Japanese cuisine with high-quality ingredients & some great flavours. That said, the prices are very steep - both food & drinks are expensive. There's a wide selection of sake & wine, but oddly only one beer option, priced at $18 for a 330ml bottle. Portions are quite small, & service was incredibly slow; it took nearly two hours for three small dishes. Service was typical for Montreal - not much warmth or enthusiasm. The host at the door (tall guy) seemed annoyed to see customers arriving & barely acknowledged us. On the plus side, once we voiced our concerns about the delay, our server was very understanding, expedited the next dish, & offered a discount, which was appreciated.
Downstairs: Much better vibes. Intimate atmosphere with a great sound system & all-vinyl sets every night. The drink menu was more varied, including a few reasonably priced Boreal beer options. A good spot for drinks & music.
Got a table at the bar last minute. Had the BEST bartender walk us through the food & sake. Shared stories of Japan. We asked for some teaching on how to eat traditionally. He was so genuine & took this experience beyond anything we have had in the past. The food & the vibe & the music (dj) was wonderful but his personality & time is something we will talk about for a long time. The club vibe after dinner was also really great. Music dancing food team 10 out of 10.
This is a great spot & I have eaten here often with much pleasure but things have changed--something I wish had been made clear on the website. Previously, same menu upstairs at Fleurs & Cadeaux & downstairs at Sans Soleil. No longer. I came for a special sake & some fave dishes which are no longer available downstairs. While they still share a kitchen, it seems the two venues are now being made more distinct from each other. I prefer the upstairs menu & seating style so won't be visiting downstairs again. Note that much seating is on backless stools--my friend & I tried to sit side by side so that we should both have back support but were not permitted as it would crowd the next table. We each had a drink & left (after asking for my fave sake to be brought downstairs) so I don't know how to rate this venue now. Great for people with strong backs who enjoy the music-forward vibe. I'm sure the food & drink will be excellent but it may not so comfortable for people who want a quieter space for conversation & need seating with a back.
Amazing experience, including a wide variety of Japanese food, impeccable service, rare & delicious sake & amazing music.
Booked the Sans Soleil bar for a 6:30 dinner to be able to enjoy the DJ that begins playing at 8pm. To clarify, their food menu is from Fleurs & cadeaux which was absolutely phenomenal - their sashimi selection is to die for as it is so fresh. They have this delicious 2yr aged soya sauce which is also provided for the sashimi. We also ordered the uni chips & dip, the marinated veggies & the peanut sauce udon. The service was generally pretty great but it took over 45 minutes for our last dish (we think the kitchen forgot our final dish which is why service was so slow in the end). All in all, would love to return again for this delightful supper club located below the eclectic pink restaurant! They also had a fun vending machine filled with beers & sakes which is meant to mimic all the fun vending machines japan is known for!
The food, vibe, music & attention to detail was fantastic. Melt in your mouth sashimi, tasty duck, pork belly & udon. Ask for a sake pairing & try something earthy & fun. Great recommendations from our server on their sake. Mind blowing flavours. Great experience.
The food is amazing... like ya thats all i have to say LOL. Their cocktails too are awesome, especially the ones with saké.
Excellent saké cocktails. We also appreciated the server explaining the different saké types & letting us try samples. The miso aged duck was sooo tasty. Chirashi bowl was good but a little pricey given the portions. Loved the music, the vibe, the cosy ambiance, & the fact that the music wasn't too loud & we could carry on a conversation without yelling over the volume. Thank you for a lovely night.
