Mackerel Montadito: A stellar start. Served with sesame & horseradish on crusty bread, it was perfectly balanced & a definitive highlight.
Guineafowl: Exceptional. The fowl was delicious, but the rich Sauce Albufera was the absolute star of the night-velvety & completely amazing.
Tagliatelle with Chanterelles: The al dente pasta with corn & pancetta cotta was pure comfort.
Octopus: The charred octopus with summer squash was meltingly tender.
Zucchini Involtini & Lamb: Great supporting dishes. The rolled zucchini with yogurt was light & fresh, while the local lamb with okra & olives added a rustic, savory depth.
Morcilla (Blood Sausage): Served with piperade, this was the only miss. It was beautifully prepared but ultimately just okay compared to the rest of the menu.
Flan: One of the best flan I ever had.
The Verdict: Between the warm service, the mesmerizing kitchen view, & the standout flavors, Beba remains one of the most exciting spots in the city.
I guess the best words to describe my experience at Beba are underwhelmed & disappointed. we chose to go to Beba for a special occasion after seeing all the social media posts of high ratings with the title of it being #27 on North Americas top 50 restaurants...im not sure who made that list but our experience was quite the contrary. Let me start off by saying the food was extremely mediocre tasting (minus the mackerel that was delicious) . While the menu looked interesting, the dishes lack depth & flavor & at the price point which we paid, you would expect much better food quality & professionalism. I work in management in hospitality so I understand better than anyone issues can arise but waiting 45 mins for one single kinish with some caviar on-top, priced at 39$ is borderline insulting. If there are issues in the kitchen the server should inform the guest ahead of time not after the fact when the plate is brought out. Maybe it's a lack of training for the front of house staff. I had such high hopes for this restaurant experience so having such a bad experience at 240$ before tip was a complete let down.
We went there for a second time because our friends organized a birthday dinner there. For the second time, we had a really disappointing experience at Beba.
The biggest problem isn't one bad dish, it's the combination of things. Consistent bad food, poor service, lack of attention to detail, & prices that don't match what's being delivered.
When you're paying restaurant prices, you expect good ingredients, properly executed dishes, attentive service & a level of hospitality that makes you want to come back. Here, none of that came together.
Each of us in the group left with disappointment. We were left feeling we didn't get value for our money. the food, service & overall experience was just a real disappointment.
What a disappointment! For a place with so much buzz, the food was a total letdown. The dishes were dry, hard, & desperately begging for some sauce to give them life. There was absolutely no depth, no layers of flavor at all & the ingredients they did throw together didn't even go well with each other. It's like they didn't even try to make it a cohesive meal. Between the tiny, overpriced portions & the deafening noise in the dining room, I left completely unsatisfied. Save your money & your appetite, because this place is definitely not worth the hype.
Beba is truly something special. The montadito de maquereau might just be the best bite in Montreal, absolutely incredible. Creative dishes, amazing flavours, & a warm, intimate atmosphere. A true Montreal gem!
Honestly, this was one of the most disappointing dining experiences my wife & I have ever had. We had high expectations - we had to reserve in advance & the restaurant was highly rated.
From the moment we walked in, things went downhill. The waitress seated us in a corner where we couldn't sit face-to-face. We ended up side-by-side, forced to watch other people eat.
There was NO AC in the entire restaurant. On a summer evening it was extremely hot. They eventually opened the garage-style window, but it made almost no difference.
The waitress was rude & seemed offended that we didn't order drinks. She never came back to refill our water & only appeared when delivering our dishes. The slow service honestly made us feel like she was trying to pressure us into ordering alcohol.
Worst of all, our corner was infested with FLIES. They were everywhere. We spent more time swatting them away than actually eating.
The food was hit-or-miss & significantly overpriced - the kind of meal that leaves you still hungry afterward.
I wouldn't come back anytime soon.
We got the chefs menu. The food was exceptional. Caviar knish, montadito with mackeral, & dates were standouts. You cant go wrong with their dishes. We liked it over Joe Fish which was also really good but the food at Beba is certainly more creative. Staff were excetional, attentive with our every need. Never had an empty glass. Only suggestion is to turn up the AC on a warm summer night as it got warm during the dinner service.
Had pretty high expectations for this restaurant & the service was excellent. The server explained every dish to us & we were seated by the open kitchen.
The Montadito was delicious, it comes with 2 per order & had a great balance of flavour. The textures worked very well together & the mackerel was delicious.
The Involtini was interesting & pretty good, there was a lot of flavour & was unique.
We had the bone marrow next which was amazing, especially when you get a bite with the anchovy with everything else - it was an explosion of flavour.
The rabbit was… ok. I usually love rabbit but while the texture was good & not dry, there wasn't much flavour even when I tried to have it with the pancetta & peas. I saw similar reviews about the pork.
If I return, I'd probably order more of the other dishes than focus on the main.
I have been hearing a lot about this place lately so I finally made a reservation to see what the hype was all about. It did not disappoint at all. The menu is creative & the ingredients clearly tasted fresh. I was particularly impressed with how the staff handled the busy rush during peak hours. You can tell they put a lot of care into the presentation of the dishes. A great addition to the local dining scene that I plan on visiting again very soon.
