Review Summary

Mister Steer draws diners with a nostalgic Montreal vibe and classic diner charm, and the burgers are the centerpiece with the Steerburger and the Hero earning high praise for texture and flavor, while the Suzie Q fries and the Tex Mex poutine are frequently highlighted as standout sides; however, some guests feel the prices are steep for fast casual, with drinks and tax/tip adding up and several comments about value not matching cost, and a few meals arriving unevenly or less flavorful than expected compared to cherished memories; service ranges from brisk and friendly to indifferent, and a handful of visits noted a decline in consistency from former favorites, though the spot remains a beloved destination for burger lovers and a notable Montreal institution for those seeking a hearty, retro dining experience.

Mister Steer has definitely gone downhill compared to what it once was. The quality just isn't the same anymore - from the food to the overall experience, it's lost the charm & consistency that used to make it a standout. Disappointing for long-time customers who remember how good it used to be.

Mister Steer is a true gem for anyone craving vintage Montreal vibes & comfort food done right. From the retro decor to the friendly service, everything about this place feels like a nostalgic throwback-in the best way possible.

The menu is extensive with something for everyone, but let's be honest-you're here for the burger. Their signature Steerburger has earned its reputation as'the best burger in the world,' & it really lives up to the hype: juicy, flavorful, & perfectly cooked every time.

Prices are super reasonable for the quality & portions. & don't skip the famous Suzie Q fries-they're crispy, curly, & the perfect sidekick to any meal.

Whether you're a local or just passing through, Mister Steer is a must-visit spot that captures the heart (& appetite) of Montreal.

Service was 10 out of 10
Food was 6 out of 10, very heavy breading on the sole fish, & flavors were bland.
In general the food was overpriced for the quality & type of restaurant.

Food: Poutine was okay-not a lot of flavor going on despite ordering the Steer Burger & Tex Mex poutines. Pecan pie was just pecans on top of a corn syrup jelly. Really not good. Would be very surprised if it was even made in house & not brought in frozen. What bothered me as well was how confident this restaurant's marketing is that they have the best food around, despite easily having some of the worst for Ste-Catherine, in my opinion. For this quality cheap fast food with apparently not much care put into it, I did not expect the big price tag, which I found offensive.

Service: Our server, a young man seemed great! An older woman who also served us seemed a little grumpy with us for whatever reason.

Atmosphere: I always love a diner vibe. Space was good for calm conversation, but we were around quite late.

I would not return, & would recommend others not to either.

This fabulous downtown diner has, by far, one of the best juicy burgers in Montreal. Been here multiple times in the past ten years & every time, the same high quality food, & service along with a nice North American diner vibe. & the prices are very reasonable! This place has to be on everyone's 💜 list IMHO 😅

Went with some friends tonight each of us with one thing in mind: A GOOD STEAK.
I had the AAA Rib Steak with a side of "Suzie Q" fries & some coleslaw.

My steak was ordered medium & seasoned with steak spices.

It was just right. Juicy, tender, could have used slightly more seasoned but tasted very good & flavorful nevertheless.
The meat quality was definitely AAA grade.

It reminded me of the late Main deli (R.I.P. 😭😭😭) steaks my Dad & I would always order there, Kosher style. Old school.
Simple, honest & good.

I'm no steak expert by any means, myself eating steaks very seldomly over the years, tonight's being the first in over 2 years.

Service was excellent & very kind & warm.
Atmosphere wise...your typical Texas-style cowboy diner look. Don't like the color scheme too much...

Definitely a great Burger joint & now that I know, steaks too.

Mr. Steer is definitely a 1st place rodeo!
