I adore Malatang so I might be a little biased, but I loved this place. You grab a bowl, load up on the assorted selection of ingredients, & then the price is calculated by weight. Though it does look like they have combo options too.
This place had a wide selection of ingredients, there was plenty of options! We ordered the spicy beef broth, & it was very rich & flavorful with a nice kick to it. The only thing that I would say is that some of the veggie items didn't look particularly fresh.
The staff was also super nice, offering to explain how ordering works & show you the ropes. Overall, very enjoyable, delicious experience & a fun & unique way to eat! We felt very fulfilled leaving this place.
I used to come here often because the prices were really affordable. But when I visited a few days ago, the price suddenly jumped by over 10 dollars & I always get about the same amount. It used to be around $30 each time, but last time it was $46. It seems like both the owner & staff have changed too. I won't be coming back again.
It seems like people are complaining about the price but honestly it's less expensive than the malatang spots downtown. They also have combos which are pretty good & even cheaper! I regret not coming here instead it's the same thing & just as good but less expensive than dt . Sauce station is a little lacking but has everything you need. We were served by an old Chinese man & he was honestly so sweet & kind, helped us a lot.
Food was absolutely delicious but it was kinda pricey. I went for the classic broth they have & it was mildly spicy with rich flavors. They also had a ton of options to pick.
Pros & cons. Pros: it's a really fun concept. Love the wide selection of ingredients you get to pick from to create your own bowl & dipping sauce. The bowl is also huge & you can choose from different soup bases. The seating is also nice & comfortable. Cons: the price by weight. I really don't think we can justify it. Yes, you get a lot in the bowl & you'll feel very full afterwards. However the avg bowl is going to be around $45 so get ready to spend. We even saw other ppl being shocked by the price & returning some ingredients. Honestly it's the most expensive soup I've ever had. Personally for the price you can just go to AYCE. I think if they're charging an AYCE price, they should at least make it AYCE style. Also there was no music in the background. It was very quiet & it made us feel even more strange about the amount we spent on a soup bowl. We were very excited to try this place & I wish I could have wrote something more positive. If they consider changing their price we would be more interested in going back.
Pretty good price in China town. This is a famous chain restaurant & this location isn't too crowded. I paid $26 & am very full. Wide selection of ingredients & soup base is very tasty.
The broth was not that good, for the price I expected it to be flavorful & spicy. You get a better deal at the Lamb place next to it! The water was also really bitter :( won't come back for sure. The service was nice though the lady was friendly & helpful 👍
Great place. Lots of food varieties on the shelf, different pot bases to choose from. They got cute sauce plates too!! Price for 2 bowls in picture comes to $35 The only downside about this place is the stairs. The anti slip pads are very narrow so watch your steps
Hidden gem, you pay 3.50$ by each 100 g of food you choose for your soup (veggies, meat, pasta, seafood, everything is the same price) & then you select your broth (2$). Our soup came to around 17-18$ tax in, very good portion. Be careful, the extra spicy broth is officially the spiciest soup I've eaten in Montreal (& I normally eat very hot food).
Clean, fresh, & the waitress was friendly & welcoming. Most importantly, the price is really decent!! I tried the classic soup base. It was milky & tasted, not too spice. Highly recommend!!
