We went to the well known L'express, & we had an excellent experience!
We made a reservation in advance at a later period around 8PM-9PM.
There were still lots of clients & a bit noisy, which I think is the reason why the waitress was a bit late & didn't answer our call at the first moment. There're unlimited baguette & tiny pickles on the table. Manu was print in handwriting font which is a bit hard to identify, plz go to their official website to do the research first if you have difficulty with it!
But the most important thing is, the food & the drinks are amazing! The vibe is comfortable & chill, & it was a great experience to have a wonderful anniversary dinner here.
BTW, the pickle is a bit sour, make sure you are ready for it!
Extremely bad & unfriendly to foreigners. Their menu is written in fancy script & I couldn't make it out at all. Even when I asked the waiter for help, he just ignored me. I really don't recommend it.
Great dining experience & good value of money! Highly recommended French restaurant in Montreal.
Don't let clients in when you're just about to close (after they ask you if they can still dine) if it's to be rude & rough with them. Two years later like 10 minutes after the experience, I don't remember anything of it on a culinary level, only that I spent 200$ on a dinner for two to be mistreated by the manager.
Had dinner here yesterday & got food poisoning!! Had the steak, liver pate & salad. Have been sick since. Very disappointed especially since they claim the ingredients are all fresh.
Such a classic french bistro! Learned that the same titles restaurant on park ave in manhattan is not connected. & as someone who went to both now, can't stand up to the real French Montréal version!
We felt like in authentic French restaurant. All dishes were delicious & well served. Thank you for this experience!
My partner has being coming to this busy French-bistro style restaurant for around 40 years, & I have visited several times - it never lets us down. Great menu of French classics & specials, efficient, friendly service & great wines. It was difficult to choose, but I went for:
- ??Smoked herring from lles-de-la-Madeleine
- ??Veal kidneys in mustard sauce
- ??Ile flottante with caramel
The smoked herring was served warm on thinly sliced potatoes. Excellent.
The veal kidneys were cooked pink, in a rich, mustard sauce. So good.
The lle Flottante was huge (a bit too big), really good & beautifully presented with large pieces of perfect peanut brittle.
A really good meal, in really good surroundings, nice atmosphere & friendly, efficient service. We left very satisfied & very full!

Went for lunch expecting more from such an established institution. I ordered the rognons, which were unfortunately disappointing. Out of all the pieces, 2 or 3 were poorly cleaned, giving the entire plate a strong, unpleasant taste. This wasn't my first time having kidneys - I simply wished they had been better prepared.
The service was also mediocre. We had to flag down our server multiple times to get our bottle of wine, as they were storing it somewhere other than near our table.
Would I give it another chance? Perhaps in a couple of years. For context, lunch for two - including one starter, two main dishes, & a $65 bottle of wine - came to $210.
The Sorrel soup was… well as good as Sorrel soup can get I guess… was ok
The duck confit was (probably) good, if it wasn't swimming in some kind of a red beans stew that completely overwhelmed the taste & texture of the duck :(
The baba a rum was superb.
Service au bar convenable
Manque un peu de personnalisation
Un peu déçu
Feels like a french bistro. Steak was disappointing. Bonmerow was great. Octopus great
L'Express is truly one of the best places in Montréal to experience a classic French dining atmosphere. The service is fast, professional, & very experienced. Even though it's busy, everything runs smoothly. You can really feel the Parisian vibe the black-&-white flooring, bar seating, & energetic atmosphere are all spot on. If you want to experience a true French dining experience in Montréal, this place is absolutely a must.
10/10 no notes. Family of 5 ate the most delicious lunch, left no crumbs.
