The ambiance is cozy, lively, & timeless. We walked in with no resy, got seated at 10:30 PM. Still it was very vibey. There's a large wine list with options at various price points. Food was authentic, comforting & very french. We tried appetizers & dessert (profiteroles) - best profiteroles of my life.
Joelle made our evening wonderful with his recommendations & service.
Beef tartare & bone marrow were a smash hit followed by the caramel dessert!
Restaurant has been open for a long time & is a blend of classic French & Montreal fare. Food was amazing. Complimentary table gherkins with mustard was oddly delicious. Profiteroles for dessert were also a highlight.
By far one of the best restaurants in Montreal. Incredible French Bistro on St-Denis. The service is fantastic, the food is delicious, & the cozy atmosphere is immediately greets you.
Each table comes with complementary pickles, dijon mustard, & bread!
The duck & veal kidneys are a must have. Finally the Ile flottante dessert is massive, but delicious.
First time here with my wife , I've been here a few times already. The food is always good as usual, we did book online which made it quicker when we came in. My wife had the paysanne soup which wasn't famous to be honest . We both has the steak which was pretty good & the dessert that was delicious .
We were told about this from some locals, I never would've recognized it from the street as a restaurant. It flies under the radar. Almost like it is hidden in plain sight. A real treasure.
It is so worth finding this place. The food was fabulous. The service is the most attentive I've seen in a very, very long time! & they clearly take pride in that service when you look at the wall of photos that shows the wait staff & culinary team that support this restaurant year after year after year!
I had the special that involved fish, & a gorgeous caper, butter, lemon sauce. They had no trouble working around an unusual allergy like garlic. Rather than telling me what limited options they could have, they told me to just tell them what I liked, & that they would adapt it… this is so very, very rare today, post pandemic.
Just know that if you order the floating caramel island dessert it is gigantic! & far more than you can consume, even between two people!
The food was not to my taste. Tho the dessert were good.
L'Express is an exceptional restaurant & a true gem for dinner in Montreal. From start to finish, the experience was outstanding. The service was impeccable-friendly, attentive, & detail-oriented, making us feel well taken care of throughout the evening. The atmosphere was lively yet relaxed, creating the perfect vibe for a memorable night out. The food was absolutely delicious, with every dish showcasing fresh, high-quality ingredients & expert preparation. The highlight of the meal was the dessert-the floating island with caramel (if I recall the name correctly)-an absolute must-try! It was the perfect sweet ending to an already amazing dining experience. If you're looking for a spot in Montreal that combines excellent food, top-notch service, & a wonderful ambiance, L'Express should be at the top of your list. Highly recommended!
came here on a sunday night, service was amazing. loved how you start off with bread & pickles, we ended up getting the buffalo cheese which was incredible. for the price of the steak i would expect a bigger piece, could definitely do with less fries but it tasted good, would do a different main next time. for dessert we got the maple profiteroles which were delicious & the creme brûlée was really good as well but the cookie on top was forgettable. one thing to note, there was no music playing which threw me off. overall a great spot, lovely for a late night dinne
This restaurant offers an authentic French dining experience that truly transports you to the heart of France. From the moment you walk in, the ambiance sets a warm, inviting tone with classic French decor that adds a touch of charm & elegance to the space. The menu is filled with traditional French dishes that are well-crafted & full of flavor. Each dish we tried was prepared with great attention to detail, from the appetizers to the desserts. The prices here are very reasonable, especially considering the quality & authenticity of the food. It's rare to find a place that offers such high-quality French cuisine at such accessible prices. The main courses, such as the coq au vin & duck confit, were cooked to perfection, with flavors that were rich & satisfying without being overly heavy. The desserts, particularly the crème brûlée, were equally impressive, providing a sweet & memorable finish to the meal. The service was also excellent, with attentive staff who were knowledgeable about the menu & made thoughtful recommendations. They were quick to attend to our needs without being intrusive, which made for a comfortable & enjoyable dining experience. Overall, this restaurant is a gem for those looking to enjoy traditional French flavors in a relaxed, welcoming environment.
I totally agree with the other reviewers who say that this restaurant is worth the hype. It totally is. We made a reservation, which I suppose was a good idea, although I couldn't tell if it was totally necessary on the night we went. Also, we initially walked right past the restaurant because it's a bit nondescript & doesn't have a ton of signage. We both ordered drinks, which were well made & pretty strong, & very much enjoyed the pickles with mustard & bread/butter. Really, the only downside was that the waiter took the pickles away before dessert, so we couldn't have dessert pickles. For our appetizer, we shared the celery remoulade, which was a perfect little pile of, basically, celery coleslaw; it was very good, especially with the pickles & mustard. Our mains were the duck confit & the shrimp/chorizo risotto, which were also delicious (& also paired well with the pickles/mustard). Dessert was the profiteroles (which were maple-y & delicious) & the chocolate gateau (which was also delicious & pleasantly not sweet at all); they honestly would've paired well with the pickles/mustard if we'd still had them at the table.
Great experience overall! The food is great, the service is slow, but it was extremely busy & they seemed understaffed for a Friday night! Plus, they did accommodate for the wait by giving us two free glass of wine which was really sweet! I recommend the steak or the poached salmon as a main, it was honestly a 10/10! For the appetizer, the chicken liver pistachios with the bread is so tasty. The maple profiteroles, for the dessert, were so well balanced in terms of sweetness, 100% recommend!
Honestly blown away. A really great dining experience. Portions, flavors, quality-all was excellent, as was the service. The dessert was also fantastic-don't skip it. Price is fair given all the it offers. Will come back.
I was just walking by when this place caught my eye, & I couldn't resist checking it out. Inside, it was packed with people enjoying their food, & the vibe felt really inviting. They had an amazing wine list with choices from Canada & France. I went for the Risotto Crevette & Chorizo-wow, the flavors were out of this world! For dessert, I had the Crème Brûlée with coffee, & it honestly made me feel like I was in a 5-star restaurant. The staff was super friendly, & the guy handling the reservations & seating was incredible-he really made the experience special. I'm so glad I stopped in. What a great meal!
Superbe brasserie à la française. Les plats étaient super bons ! Les serveurs très aimables. J'ai pris la tarte au citron pour dessert 10/10!
This was the first restaurant we went in Montreal (highly recommended by a friend) & it did not disappoint! The ambience is beautiful, friendly staff & the food is top quality. We had the burrata with tomatoes (full of flavor), croque-monsieur, shrimp & chorizo risotto, the homemade raviolis & crème brûlée for dessert.
Although I am giving a 5 star review, if the rating is out of 10, I would give them only a 8.5 to 9.5. I like the place, but there were a few issues. There were lots of free places, but for celebrating my big wedding anniversary, my family of 3 was given a table of 2 with 3 chairs. We were expecting the desserts to be spectacular, but the créme brulé was runny as if it was kept too long? Many I have to give them a chance & go back to try again more dishes.
Nous nous sommes régalés du plat au dessert. Le personnel est très agréable & serviable. Excellente adresse à Montréal !
