They should have at least one Michelin star. Will visit again. W pulls recommend for anyone visiting Montreal.
Amazing food & staff! Could not recommend more highly. Everyone who visits Montreal should dine here at least once!
Let's get straight to the point: the famous lobster spaghetti here is above average & definitely not worth the wait. At an eye-watering price tag of $71++, it's asking to be judged against the best pastas in the world & that's what I'm judging it by.
First, you only get half a lobster. That's not a lot meat but they do somewhat make it up with the generous amount of spaghetti. The noodles themselves are good, but they are let down by the sauce, which is too salty. The lobster is supposed to be the star of the show but you don't taste any of it in the sauce. Half a lobster is also not proportionate to the amount of spaghetti so it doesn't feel like a satisfying meal.
Drinks here are good creative though, so I would recommend them. I got a peach mock tail & it's rare to find mocktails that have more complexity than juice.
This is a Montreal institution & it's worth going just to check out the place, but manage your expectations if you get the lobster spaghetti.
Had an absolutely delicious meal at Joe Beef! The duck was incredible - so flavorful & tender. I'm already looking forward to coming back for another piece. Highly recommend! 🦆🍷
We came to the Canadian Grand Prix & was recommended Joe Beef for dinner & it did not disappoint. We had to reserve about a month in advance for a party of two but it lived up to the hype. The food was incredible, service was top notch & we had a great time. Pictured is the lobster spaghetti which was 100% worth the price, glazed carrots, & filet mignon. I forget the name of the dessert but it was delicious. Will definitely come again!
Great food overall, but I think it has lost some of its greatness. I recall how difficult it was to get a reservation here 10 years ago. Yes, it is still tough to get the prime reservation time. We were able to snag last-minute reservations for 9:30 p.m.
The restaurant was packed! Clearly, it continues to be a popular spot. Our server was friendly, consistent with everyone's observation that outstanding service is its key strength!
The dishes that we had were all decent, but nothing out of this world. The bone marrow had an interesting spin, but the chawanmushi (Japanese steamed egg) became the main ingredient for the dish, rather than tasting much of the bone marrow & uni.
The server recommended the duck, which happens to be our pick as well. But the meat wasn't as tender as I'd like. The side dish- carrots, turned out to be my favorite dish for the night.
J'ai mangé au Joe Beef hier soir avec des amis. Nous nous sommes laissés porter & impressionner par notre serveur qui a choisi les plats pour nous à notre demande.
Le flétan dans un beurre blanc IS TO DIE FOR.
We celebrated my husband's birthday here & had an amazing experience.
The service was outstanding - our waiter was incredibly attentive, explaining the menu & daily specials in detail, & helping us choose the perfect wine.
We started with the croquettes, then had the rib eye with carrots as our main dish - everything was delicious. We found it funny that, for my husband's birthday, they placed a candle on a potato instead of a dessert 🤭 - such a quirky & memorable touch!
For dessert, we ordereded - apparently their house specialty. It was worth it.
Total including tip & 4 glass of wine was close to $400.
All in all, one of the best dinners we've ever had in Montreal. Highly recommended!
Wow, just wow. An amazing meal.
Started with PEI oysters & crab legs. Delicious. Then had an appetizer which was an'eclair' stuffed with anchovies, olives, & carmelized onions. Awesome.
We had gin martinis with the appetizers, perfect.
For main course I had a beef tenderloin with mushrooms & gravy. Cooked to perfection. My wife had halibut. She thought the sauce was a bit overpowering but still enjoyed it.
The waiter recommended two wonderful wines, a white with the fish & a red with the beef. We enjoyed both.
We had desserts: a layer cake & a'bagel' with yummy filling. Marvelous. We topped them off with cordials.
Overall a wonderful experience. Quite expensive but not more than we expected & definitely worth it.
The food at Joe Beef was awesome especially the desserts :)
The Tuna Carpaccio was good. The presentation looked odd with the tuna on top & assortment of oranges & spices underneath. Overall, it had a good balance of saltiness & sweetness. The orange pieces in this dish were really sweet & delicious.
The Croquette was good. It was crispy on the outside & filled with meaty savouriness on the inside. The sliced pickle was good too.
The Spaghetti Homard-Lobster was good. The spaghetti was cooked perfectly al dente. The lobster was tender & sweet. Wish there was more of the lobster. The bacon bits were delicious. The sauce was unique. It was a rich, creamy brandy cream sauce. It was a flavour that grows with you the more you eat it.
The Filet Mignon & Veal tongue was good. The 30-day dry aged Filet Mignon was perfectly cooked medium rare. It was a tender, juicy & savoury Filet Mignon. Would definitely recommend the Filet Mignon. The Veal tongue was okay. Texture wise it was more rubbery in the front & middle area. The base of the tongue was more tender & soft. The sauce in this dish was okay.
The Marjolaine which is their 24 layer cake was awesome. Would definitely recommend if you craving a good multi-layered chocolate, hazelnut, vanilla & caramel cake :)
The Paris-Brest à l'érable which is their Choux pastry with Maple Cream was awesome. The Choux pastry was light & fluffy. The Maple Cream was heavenly with an amazing maple syrup flavour that was not too sweet.
The Vanilla Ice Cream was awesome. It went well the 24 layer cake.
Dining at Joe Beef was an unforgettable experience from start to finish. The moment we walked in, we were greeted by a warm, lively atmosphere that set the tone for the evening. The service was exceptional-attentive, knowledgeable, & friendly, making us feel right at home despite it being a busy night.
The menu is a perfect blend of creativity & classic comfort, with every dish bursting with bold flavors. We started with a selection of appetizers, & each one was a standout. The foie gras was melt-in-your-mouth delicious, & the oysters were fresh & briny-an excellent start to what would be an amazing meal.
For the main course, I had the steak frites, which was cooked to perfection-tender, juicy, & full of flavor. The sides were equally impressive, with the roasted vegetables being a particular highlight. Everything was beautifully presented, & the portions were generous, making each bite more enjoyable than the last.
The wine list is extensive, & the sommelier's recommendation perfectly paired with our meal, elevating the whole experience.
Joe Beef is more than just a meal; it's an experience. The vibrant atmosphere, exceptional service, & unforgettable dishes make it a must-visit for anyone in Montreal. It's clear that the chefs & staff take immense pride in what they do, & that care translates into every dish served. Highly recommend!
Our dinner at Joe Beef was the highlight of our four-night trip to Montreal (& we thoroughly enjoyed all our other meals, too!). This iconic restaurant more than lives up to its reputation, & we wanted to share our wonderful experience.
The food was superb, & the service was exceptional. The entire staff struck the perfect balance-organic, approachable, & friendly, yet effortlessly delivering flawless, attentive service. Their creativity, authenticity, & genuinely local vibe added a unique charm to the evening, making it feel elevated & down-to-earth.
While Joe Beef isn't a budget-friendly option, every dollar spent felt worth it. The quality, atmosphere, & attention to detail made for an unforgettable experience. We ordered what I believe was their signature steak with mushrooms (the name escapes me), a deliciously fresh salad, & a classic shrimp cocktail-all perfectly prepared & full of flavor.
We can't recommend Joe Beef highly enough if you're visiting Montreal. It's a true culinary gem & an experience you'll remember long after your trip!
I've been wanting to go to Joe Beef for 15+ years, since I first saw it on the travel channel or food network. That's the only reason I've given it a 4/5... because it couldn't possibly live up to the anticipation.
But it was great, & I definitely recommend checking it out. It's a true Montreal legend. The atmosphere & staff were superb. The food was good. Not the out of this world extravaganza I was expecting but absolutely delicious. We had the tuna tartare & the strip with potatoes & bone marrow. At $130 for the steak alone... it's a pricey meal. & worth it. The wine was excellent & the service was fantastic.
Really solid food, did not disappoint. But not spectacular. The service & vibe was great, would definitely go back for the vibes. Water was also filled & the staff were warm & efficient.
The foie terrine was solid. Duck was solid as well, but have had better else where. My favourite was probably the caramel pudding, it managed to be not too sweet.
Their lobster pasta is what they're known for & I found it a bit disappointing. The pasta was a bit bitter from the lobster. As well, the flavours did not come together that well, I could taste the lobster, butter & other ingredients separately but didn't come together all that well. It's like a bunch of fancy ingredients that didn't necessarily form one cohesive dish. Out of all the dishes the lobster pasta is the only one I wouldn't recommend.
