It's not what it used to be. Everything is covered in the same heavy butter & cream . The menu is no longer thoughtful or complex. It feels like they made a giant bowl of cream & covered every single dish in it.
Joe Beef was probably the biggest disappointment of our Montreal trip, largely because of the expectations surrounding it. With its reputation, accolades, Anthony Bourdain connection, & constant recommendations online, we expected something genuinely memorable.
Unfortunately, the entire experience felt rushed from the beginning. Our server was friendly enough, but seemed completely disconnected from creating an actual dining experience. There was very little discussion about the menu or recommendations, & the focus seemed to be on getting drinks & food in & out as quickly as possible. Even the sparkling rosé we ordered was left at the table without an ice bucket, which felt surprisingly careless for a restaurant of this reputation.
The famous lobster spaghetti was good, but nowhere near the experience we had been led to expect. There was nothing wrong with it, but it felt surprisingly ordinary considering how celebrated the dish is. The halibut was very good, although ultimately not particularly memorable either.
What affected the evening most was the constant feeling that we needed to hurry. Servers repeatedly circled the table &, on several occasions, attempted to clear plates while we were still eating. When we dine as a group, part of the experience is being able to relax, talk, enjoy the food & enjoy each other's company. Here, it felt like the priority was turning the table over rather than allowing us to enjoy the evening.
Joe Beef wasn't bad food. It was simply nowhere near the experience its reputation had led us to expect. It felt like a restaurant relying heavily on its past credentials rather than delivering the kind of hospitality & memorable experience that originally earned them.
Ironically, we finished the evening at Milky Way nearby, which was fantastic & ended up being far more memorable than dinner itself.
Incredible dinner with my wife here last night. From start to finish . The seafood platter, tartare, spaghetti & hen were are 10/10. Real, honest service- not pretentious. Loved everything about it

Service horrible ! Aucune structure dans la presentation du menu. Attente interminable pour recevoir les plats. & arrogance + moquerie du serveur. Un grand manque de respect qui nous a tous mis mal alaise. Nous sommes reste car la commande était Deja passè & donc par respect pour les cuisiners. Mais pour une note a + de 600$ nous sommes très très déçus. Plus jamais cette adresse. Très loin d'être à la hauteur du service de chasse & pêche ou mastard....
Une institution sur Montréal & nous nous réjouissons d y aller dîner en famille. Le lieu est sympa, la cuisine fine, en revanche le temps d attente a été incroyablement long [1 heure entre l entrée & le plat], la lumière est tellement tamisée que on ne voit pas les plats & l attitude des serveurs très limites lorsque on demande un peu d éclairage pour une dame de 86 ans. Bref, deception & il y a sur Montréal bien d autres établissements aussi bons & bien meilleurs en terme d accueil.
Nice space & fun music create good ambience. Menu was not the most creative but quality food cooked skillfully, & delicious. On that score, easy to see why the place has such a strong following. But, service was lumpy & off-putting. Some really nice staff, but the assigned server was slow & rude. Noone comes to this (or any) restaurant to be aggressively mansplained about wine pairings. Might hesitate to go back despite a good dinner.
Lives up to the hype! Came here for dinner on August 14th to celebrate a friend's birthday & was pleasantly surprised by how well balanced all the dishes were. I was hesitant on the lobster spaghetti but it ended up being my favorite!
What actually blew me away was the amazing service we were provided by our server. He was so friendly, chatted with us even though it was a busy night & really helped us navigate the menu to choose dishes we would like. 10/10 would recommend for celebrating an occasion!
Kind of everything you need & want from a restaurant. Our server was outstanding, very accommodating. Portions were great & the flavors were memorable. Would highly recommend.
