Joe Beef is widely celebrated as a must-visit Montreal institution that consistently delivers a memorable, high-energy dining experience. Guests frequently praise the warm, eclectic atmosphere and the exceptional level of hospitality provided by the knowledgeable and attentive staff. While the menu is recognized for its rich, decadent, and flavor-forward approach, with iconic dishes like the lobster spaghetti, foie gras, and various steak and seafood preparations often receiving acclaim, some diners find the cuisine occasionally overhyped or inconsistent. Although experiences with portion sizes, pricing, and noise levels vary, most visitors appreciate the restaurant's commitment to quality ingredients and its unique charm, frequently recommending it as a premier destination for those seeking a celebratory and indulgent meal in the city.
Not my first time, but I may not go back. Honestly, the atmosphere & service is great, but the food was average at best. Only the dessert was very good. I left hungry. Prices are high for what you get.
From the moment I walked through the door, I understood why Joe Beef is considered one of Montreal's culinary icons. The ambiance is warm, quaint, charming, & intimate, the kind of place that immediately makes you feel as though you're about to experience something truly special.
The service was exceptional. Every member of the team was attentive, genuinely enthusiastic, & incredibly knowledgeable. As each dish arrived, every ingredient, preparation, & flavour combination was thoughtfully explained, adding another layer to the experience.
I shared with my server that I had come on the recommendation of a CWC, French-trained chef, who insisted that if I was visiting Montreal, Joe Beef was an absolute must. I told him I wasn't simply looking for dinner, I was there for a culinary experience. When he offered to curate my meal, I happily placed myself in his hands. It was, without question, one of the greatest dining experiences of my life.
Every course was extraordinary. The oysters were impeccably fresh. The foie gras was luxurious & unforgettable. The sweetbreads were nothing short of divine. Every bite showcased remarkable creativity, flawless execution, & bold yet beautifully balanced flavours. This wasn't just a meal, it was a celebration of exceptional ingredients & culinary craftsmanship.
As someone who actively seeks out memorable food experiences, Joe Beef has earned a permanent place at the very top of my list. It exceeded every expectation I had imagined & then some.
The next time I'm in Montreal, there's no question where I'll be dining. Thank you for an unforgettable evening.
Great food & service. Tried the lobster spaghetti & duck. Both were delicious. The star for me was the foie gras. The back dining room was a bit warm when we went, otherwise atmosphere would be a 5 too.

Meal was fantastic, atmosphere was comfy & dark - charming but not extravagant. We had a steak with peppercorn sauce to share & it was divine: a perfect cut of steak cooked to perfection with a tasty sear & lots of rendered fat. Peppercorn sauce was amazing, & the chips (fries) were some of the best I've had. I'm not sure why because they were so simple but something about them was so good, tasty & salty. The spicy mayo was amazing with them too. My only criticisms: I may be an ogre but I wanted more peppercorn sauce, I want every single bite lathered in it. & also the steak used to be a main for one at like 60 dollars & now it's a to share plate for 2 at 250 dollars, which doubles the price per person. Still delicious but it went from a nice & already kind of pricey meal out to a gut puncher.
A very disappointing experience. Absolutely not worthy of the hype.
The steak was tough, the lamb was underwhelming & the sides were standard. Wine pairings were ill informed & misleading. Absolutely not worth the price or need of reservation.
The food is actually horrendous. All this hype for what...
Scallop strawberry: bland, lacking flavour, basically just scallop sashimi
'Famous' lobster pasta: no flavour aside from it being extremely salty that the server needed to refill our water 3 times
Joe beef aioli: a veggie snack plate costs $39 with a spoonful of fishy shirmp
Our server was not checking in to see how the food was at all. Please avoid, this completely ruins our first night in Montreal
Felix & the staff were amazing. The service was impeccable. Felix created a tasting menu with the wine pairing & it was amazing.
Thank you to all !
We will be back for sure.
