Where do I begin. Eating many of the dishes was a hassle. Reaching around tree branches like I'm Tarzan, cutting & dividing things up ourselves. I see you're going for'the experience' & I'd be okay with that as long as'the taste' was also spectacular & it wasn't for the most part. The good: the lobster bisque, the lobster tail, & the brioche. These three are the only reason why this isn't a 1 star. They were the only moments where I & the rest of the table were truly satisfied. Food presentation was decent as well (only what was in the regular plates, not the other stuff hanging off branches & clothes lines & such).
Now as for why it's not a 5 star:
- The sourdough breads, cold, stale, tough & rubbery. Maybe fresh out the oven it'd be nice but the staff had to put his whole body into cutting this loaf like a dentist pulling out a wisdom tooth. The brioche overshadowed these other breads incredibly so.
- The venison main course - (oh, deer) had great presentation but taste was beyond disappointing. What did this poor deer do to deserve this fate? Flavorless spongy small bites of meat in a one-note sauce & more foam. Speaking of foam, why is there so much foam in these dishes? I've never seen this much foam even at the base of Niagara Falls. I'm 80% air now after this meal.
- Overly sweet, one-note desserts, again disappointing. The apple looked great but tasted like mushy baby food inside.
- Most of the crispy little tart bites, forgettable
- the oysters were so overly decorated I was eating it for quite a while until I realized I hadn't eaten the oyster itself underneath
At the end of the day, taste is above all. You can have creativity, theatrics, & wildly varied ingredients but simplifying things down a bit & focusing on quality would help a lot here. I would like every dish to blow my mind. & I don't mean that every dish has to be the most flavorful, rich, intense thing. I've had subtle dishes at other restaurants that have been incredible. I encourage you to thoroughly test this out in the kitchen when devising these dishes. Have these dishes each individually blown your minds somehow?
Also, why is the entire city of Montreal in this restaurant? No wonder the staff seemed overworked. The various dish arrangements & gadgets & incredients combined with how many people they have to coordinate & serve at any given time seems like a recipe for disaster. Some tables were extremely loud. Again, simplicity. Fewer people, better ambiance, simpler, more delicious menu.
6) Revisite garantie !
Celebrate my 40th Birthday this weekend with my sisters & mom & dinner was splendid! The food was truly delicious & the presentation so visually memorable we'll be talking about it for ages! The portion sizes are also very good especially the shared plates. A lot of places with several course menus it's the itty bitty portions & bites. This was a nice mix of solid portions & tasty bites to keep your palate excited! The only negatives I will say are the service seemed a little disjointed. The moment we sat down we were give some delicious amuse-bouches, the service was quick & on-point, however we didn't seem to have a small fork to pick up the little tasters presented to us so we were expected to use our fingers which I found a little od (they only had a little knife & large spoon on the table). Some of the plates we were given very clear instructions to wait until they brought other elements to complete it etc, & then others they left on the table & we were confused if we were to wait or serve ourselves. It was a bit confusing also because they didn't leave any cutlery to serve the shared meals. Once we stopped ordering alcohol the service then really diminished which is always someone that I don't really appreciate a customer. We had each had 2 glasses of wine each, which I think is very reasonable & fair, but it didn't seem that way to them. The other thing was a little something special was supposed to be done in recognition of the birthday & they confirmed that 3 or more times & it never happened. That said, super AMAZING experience, but I will agree with some of the other reviews that they lean on their Michelin star.
Been here a couple of times.. the food & the service never disappoints…It is my favourite restaurant in Montreal & I was very happy they got a Michelin star… they truly deserve it…
Staff is great
Food is amazing
Atmosphere is top notch…
Menu changes but the lobster cappuccino is always there & it is delightful to have it.
The whole staff is doing an amazing job.
Pretentious & overrated.
Food was average for a Michelin 1 star.
The decor is very basic, nothing special.
The service felt uncomfortable & off-putting. One server was breathing very heavily throughout, & he came across as cold & not very genuine. He was also coughing frequently, not covering mouth, which raised concerns about whether he should have been working that day ...
It made the experience less enjoyable.
I had a fantastic experience here. It was my birthday & I did the tasting menu. They made sure my wine pairing glasses were well topped up for my birthday & the staff was very friendly & even gave me a birthday treat at the end that wasn't on the menu. The tasting menu was such an experience. The flavors, colors, textures. It was incredible. 10/10 worth it. At the end they let me into the kitchen to show me how things were done. I have nothing but good things to say about all the kitchen & restaurant staff, & the food!
Insanely overpriced. It feels like a restaurant trying its best 2+ Michelin star impression. Everything feels stale & impersonal.
My partner & I have been to a few Michelin Star restaurants, but have never been so immersed in our food experience as we were at J.Ferrer (VR goggles, kitchen tour, attentive staff). We had the 10 course experience - a must. The only thing that could have gone better is being told of the extra champagne cost for our starting beverage & our table being wiped between courses.
An absolutely incredible French fine dining experience! The 10-course Signature Menu was exquisite, each dish thoughtfully layered with the chef's storytelling. Service at a Michelin starred restaurant can sometimes feel overly formal or distant, but here it was warm, attentive, & genuinely engaging. The complexity of the menu could have easily felt overwhelming, but the team did an excellent job presenting each dish in a way that felt meaningful & memorable. A special thanks to Enzo, Guillaume, Renyali, Michel, & another team member whose name we didn't catch (he cut the bread for us)! I hope they get a recognition.
Overall, the meal was a whole experience, & I'm glad I had it. 90% of what I ate was excellent, 90% of the service was fantastic & top notch
Upsides: fun, creative, & flavorful small bites. I loved trying so many flavors & textures. & the interior was beautiful. Staff were mostly attentive & professional
Downsides: one of the dishes was missing a main ingredient. When I asked about it, I got two different stories, & neither was genuinely true. Disappointed in how their mistake was handled. Some of the dishes were chipped. The column I was sat next to was covered in dust & dirt. & a device they used as part of an immersive experience was malfunctioning, with nothing done to fix or make up for the experience. Several lapses in attentiveness of the servers, particularly at the end when other tables who finished after me got their checks before me
Overall, I'm glad I had the experience. For the price point, I expected them to be more on their game & attentive to the details
We came a group of 10 & had the 10 course menu. It was about 4 hour dining experience.
Each dish though very tiny in size is packed with big flavours.i liked the concept of having a story & theme. I personally don't eat shellfish or pork & the restaurant was very accommodating.
We went on a Wednesday & getting our drink orders was very slow. But everything else was good.
An experience. Presentation was next to none. Fanrastic service & the food journey was beyond what we expected.
Went there for my birthday & I got to see my boyfriend receiving calls from them days prior, the person on the phone was terrible, it seemed that she was not interested at all in making clear what the difference between the menus is, when asked for an explanation she replied with'it's just completely different' which made us opt for the birthday menu which had been previously explained to us. At the restaurant the service was good, it was all French young men that were very courteous & polite, they explained every dish correctly in English which I appreciated.
As for the food, some of the dishes are good but it's not something that I'll remember in the future, funnily enough what I enjoyed the most was the lobster butter, which is meant to be eaten just with bread.
For a Michelin star restaurant it was pretty average but the cherry on the cake was that even though my boyfriend had specified that it was my birthday, since THEY called to change the hour of the reservation they forgot to add the information & I didn't get the birthday dessert, when we made them notice the mistake they didn't care much & just managed to ask'would you like it now?' While we were paying. I wouldn't normally care for a cake but for an over $350 dinner feels pretty sucky.
Super service.Arnaud est très attentionné. Les plats sont goûteux & parfaits. Nous y retournerons.
A gastronomical delight from beginning to end, with a passionate team eager to share their knowledge of food & wine, elevating the entire experience. Each course felt thoughtfully distinct-creative in composition, yet grounded in exceptional quality ingredients. What truly set the evening apart was the generosity of the team, welcoming us into the kitchen to gain a deeper appreciation for the care, precision, & dedication behind every plate. Ten beautifully executed courses paired with excellent wines made for a seamless & memorable progression-take the time to savour this experience, as it is one worth lingering over.
Tout a été parfait!! Un endroit exceptionnel où l'on nous fait vivre une expérience incroyable & unique 🌟👏 - La grande table gastronomique a dépassée nos attentes & nous avons été émerveillés!
