Best meal in Montreal. The Tasting Menu is totally worth it

Unfortunately, this was one of the most disappointing dining experiences I've had in Montreal, especially considering the reputation & price point.

We came for an 8:30 reservation for two & ordered à la carte: six warm oysters, the tartlet, a pasta dish, & the rib steak. Our bill came to around $319 before tip.

The oysters were probably the highlight. The sauce was excellent, although the oysters themselves felt slightly overcooked to me. The tartlet was fine, but nothing particularly memorable, essentially vegetables, cheese, & pastry without anything that made it feel special for a restaurant at this level.

More concerning was an ingredient issue with the tartlet. The menu described it as containing green peas, & when the dish was initially served, we were specifically told it was sweet green pea. It looked like fava bean to us, so we asked another server, who then explained that because of the season, they had substituted fava beans.

My partner has a fava bean allergy. I fully acknowledge that we should have proactively informed the restaurant about the allergy, so I am not blaming them for not knowing about it. However, if a listed ingredient has been substituted, especially with another legume, the staff should know what is actually in the dish & communicate it accurately. Being explicitly told'sweet green pea' when the dish actually contained fava bean is concerning.

The rib steak was the biggest disappointment. It came with two side dishes, which were a nice addition, & the overall portion was generous. However, the steak itself was underseasoned & nothing particularly special. We originally requested medium, but our server recommended medium-rare, so we followed the recommendation. The steak arrived properly medium-rare, so the cooking temperature was not the problem.

The problem was the quality of the meat. A very large portion had extremely tough sinew/connective tissue running through it. I ended up having to spit out several pieces because they simply could not be chewed. The steak knife provided was also surprisingly dull & struggled to cut through the meat.

At the end, after I left a relatively low tip, the server asked whether something had been wrong. I explained that the food simply wasn't to my taste & mentioned the steak. I was told that I should have said something earlier & that since we had eaten most of the food, there wasn't anything they could do. The server also suggested the steak may have been chewy because we had asked for it to be cooked more. That explanation did not make much sense to me: we had accepted their recommendation of medium-rare, the steak was in fact medium-rare, & the issue was the large amount of tough connective tissue rather than overcooked meat.

To be fair, the service throughout dinner was otherwise adequate. Plates were cleared quickly, our water was kept filled, & nobody was rude. But it also did not feel particularly attentive or welcoming. Nobody checked during the meal to ask how the dishes were, & the service overall felt fairly transactional.

The atmosphere also surprised me. It was quite loud, the open dining room felt much more casual than I expected at this price point, & we noticed small bugs flying around during dinner.

Ultimately, my biggest problem is value. At roughly $319 for two people before tip, I expected either exceptional food, exceptional service, or ideally both. I experienced neither. I could understand this meal much more easily at perhaps $200, solely because of portion. or even paying $250 if the steak had been genuinely outstanding. At this price, an underseasoned steak with that much inedible connective tissue is difficult to justify.

Maybe the tasting menu provides a completely different experience, but based on the à la carte meal we had, I genuinely struggle to understand the level of hype surrounding Hoogan & Beaufort. I have had significantly better food & more polished service elsewhere in Montreal.

I wanted to love this place. Unfortunately, based on this visit, I would not return.

I had such a memorable evening at Hoogan & Beaufort. I did the tasting menu with the wine pairing, & the food was excellent, but what really made the experience special was Raja, who was both my bartender & server.

Raja was incredible from start to finish. He took the time to explain each of the wines as well as ingredients I wasn't familiar with, & his knowledge & enthusiasm added so much to the experience. But what impressed me most was his genuine hospitality & his ability to connect people.

I was dining alone at the bar, & Raja introduced me to the gentleman dining solo next to me. We immediately hit it off & ended up staying & talking for the rest of the evening, long after we had finished our respective meals. Raja even gave us a short tour of the restaurant & took a photo of the two of us to commemorate the night.

The food & wine were wonderful, but it was Raja's warmth, thoughtfulness, & willingness to go above & beyond that turned a great dinner into a truly special evening. It's an experience I'll remember for a long time. Thank you, Raja!

Having dined at my fair share of tasting menu spots, the Michelin star here feels like a surprising choice. At 135 CAD per person, nothing was bad, but nothing truly stood out either. Montreal has several spots offering far more memorable tasting menus at a much lower price point in my opinion.

The clear highlights were the signature charred focaccia paired with the buckwheat spaghetti with choron foam. I also loved the desserts for the freshness, presentation & balance. As for the rest of the courses, from the tuna starter to the veal & morel, they were too safe & ultimately uninspiring.

Service was good & they checked in throughout the meal, but it felt entirely transactional. Once the bill was paid, the server immediately disappeared. Given the cost & the Michelin hype, the overall experience just lacked spark & the wow factor.

This review has nothing to do with the food itself, as everything we ordered was delicious. However, the service & pacing of the meal took away from the overall experience.

Our reservation was at 8:30 PM, but after being seated, it took about 20+ minutes for me to finally flag down our waiter. When I did, he looked toward another server to take care of us. That server took our drink order but never came back, so I eventually had to flag down our original waiter again.

Ultimately, our original server did end up taking care of us for the remainder of the meal, but the fact that I had to repeatedly flag someone down was a bit frustrating. Had I not gotten someone's attention, I genuinely don't know when someone would have come back to our table.

At that point, we honestly started to feel like the lack of attention may have had something to do with us being Asian. I don't like to make assumptions, but that was genuinely how the experience made us feel.

Once the food began coming out, there was roughly a 30-minute wait between dishes. While I understand some pacing is expected in a tasting menu, the overall flow felt very slow. We then noticed the rest of the restaurant seemed to be moving at a similar pace, making us wonder if this was simply the restaurant's style or part of the dining culture in Canada, since we're from the U.S.

Our waiter eventually acknowledged our frustration & explained that the tasting menu is typically paced over about 2.5 hours, with additional time for appetizers. I understand the intention behind a slower dining experience, but given the small portions, a 1.5 to 2 hour pace would have felt more appropriate.

We didn't put in our orders until around 9:00 PM & didn't leave until after 11:30 PM. While this may align with their intended pacing, the meal felt unusually drawn out.

What made the experience more disappointing was that the restaurant has a Michelin star. With that level of recognition, I expected a higher standard of service & attentiveness. The food was good overall, but the service & pacing did not meet expectations for a Michelin-starred restaurant.

Delicious, great relaxed atmosphere, caring staff - highly recommend!

We got the lunch tasting menu & a wine pairing (worth it) - our server Derek was fun to interact with, very attentive, & went the extra mile to make sure the experience was to our liking.

I had an unforgettable experience at Hoogan & Beaufort. This was my very first Michelin-star dining experience, my first tasting menu with wine pairing, & even my first solo trip to Montreal, so it was a very special occasion for me.

From the moment I arrived, the staff made me feel so welcome & comfortable, even though I was dining alone. Every course was thoughtfully prepared, beautifully presented, & paired perfectly with the wines. The team took the time to explain each dish & wine, which made the experience even more enjoyable & memorable.

To make the evening even more special, they surprised me with a complimentary appetizer & dessert. It was such a thoughtful gesture that truly made me feel valued as a guest.

Thank you to everyone at Hoogan & Beaufort for making my first Michelin-star experience one I'll never forget. It exceeded all of my expectations, & I would absolutely recommend it to anyone looking for an exceptional dining experience.

We visited recently for the first time after a recommendation from friends. We were drawn to the tasting menu with wine pairings, something we've really enjoyed at another Montreal restaurant. The food & wines were delicious & the four of us enjoyed our experience. The sommelier was exceptional with his generous comments & enthusiasm. If you're thinking of going, here are other things to consider. The cost with tip for four of us was $1400. The food servings are quite small [e.g. the main meat course the size of a golf ball] & I was hungry after dinner. The service is very formal--not much smiling--bordering on stiff [we asked for bread with the first course to soak up the delicious salad dressing & were told that was not part of their plan. They relented]. They have no Quebec wines on their extensive wine list; I should have said something as I find this surprising, perhaps unforgivable. So, I had mixed feelings but I hope this review helps you to decide on a visit. I won't be visiting again.

My partner & I had the privilege of celebrating his 40th birthday at Hoogan & Beaufort, & I can honestly say it was one of the most memorable dining experiences we've ever had.

We chose the tasting menu, & every single course was extraordinary. The warm oysters & mussels were, without question, the best I've ever had in my life. From there, each dish somehow continued to surpass the last. Every plate was beautifully presented, thoughtfully composed, & bursting with flavors that were both refined & unforgettable. I've dined at many fine restaurants, but I've truly never experienced anything quite like this.

What elevated the evening beyond the exceptional food was the people. Every member of the team was warm, welcoming, & incredibly knowledgeable. You can genuinely feel how passionate they are about their craft, & that passion shines through in every detail-from the service to the storytelling behind each course.

As a special surprise for my partner's birthday, the team graciously gave us a tour of the kitchen & their wine cellar. It was such a thoughtful gesture that made an already incredible evening feel even more personal & unforgettable.

Thank you to the entire Hoogan & Beaufort team for creating an experience we'll remember for years to come. If you're looking for one of the finest culinary experiences in Montreal, this is it. We cannot wait to return.
