We upgraded to the most expensive tasting menu & the experience was confusing. We upgraded because we wanted more lobster. I'm not certain that's what we got. Our waiter seemed unable to clearly explain what the tasting menu included & whether there was any flexibility in asking for certain dishes. As courses came out, we were confused about how many appetizers & entrees there were. It would've been helpful to have something printed so we knew what to expect. We were disappointed with the wines by the glass selections, especially with respect to the white wines. The white wines we tasted were very dry. There did not seem to be any options for something off dry or fruity. The constant filling of our water glasses (after every sip) was off putting. It interrupted our conversations & created a disconnect during the meal. The food was outstanding.
I came into Garde Manger extremely excited. Chuck Hughes is undeniably a talented chef, & expectations were high given the restaurant's reputation. Unfortunately, the experience didn't live up to it.
We opted for the $295 tasting menu per person & asked the bartender to curate a cocktail & wine pairing alongside it. For the price point which was well over $500 per person all in, the meal lacked focus & cohesion. None of the dishes truly stood out or felt memorable. The menu skewed surprisingly bland & safe, especially considering the bold, flavor driven cooking Chuck Hughes is known for.
The pairing felt sloppy & disconnected from the food, more like an afterthought than a considered progression that elevated the courses. At this level of dining, execution & intent matter just as much as ingredients & that consistency wasn't there.
This isn't bad food by any means, but it is wildly overpriced for the experience delivered. Given the cost, I expected sharper flavors, clearer vision, & a more polished overall experience
Merci beaucoup! What a fantastic experience. I ordered the chef's choice & was not disappointed from appetizers to dessert, every single bite was absolutely delicious. The bartender, a young woman, was both professional & impressively knowledgeable about wine & cocktails. The service, ambiance & music top notch. Highly recommended if you only have time for one restaurant in Montreal, make it this one!
Truly incredible meal. We went for the $125 chef's tasting + snow crab toast & were not left wanting in any way. Very patient/communicative server with great wine pairing suggestions. Support staff were also lovely & really enjoyed the energy of the chefs in the open kitchen, who openly celebrated each time we bought them a round of drinks. Probably the freshest seafood I've had in my life? I'll definitely be thinking about this meal for a long time!
Delicious food & amazing experience. Very romantic if you are dating.
The minute you walk in, you are treated to mouth-watering aromas from the grill & overall kitchen. Seafood is spectacular & wine list very interesting. Highly recommended.
Three of us dined here on August 30th. Excellent wine selections, superb seafood platter, good vegetarian option & very tasty & fresh desserts. Our waitress Taylor was very quick & knowledgeable. Excellent service from other staff ensuring continuous care & service
We sat at the bar Friday night & Jean(I hope I spelt his name correctly) was a fantastic bartender & paired wines with our meal perfectly. & he made a great paper plane!!
I've been coming here for years, & it never disappoints. The quality is always outstanding, & the creativity in every dish continues to surprise & impress me. It's one of those rare places where you feel the passion in every bite.
The tasting menu is, in my opinion, an absolute must. It's a beautifully curated journey through inventive, seasonal flavors - each course more intriguing than the last. What sets the experience apart even further is their thoughtful wine pairing by the glass. The staff takes the time to match each pour perfectly with your food, enhancing the whole experience in a way that feels both refined & personal.
The service is always warm, professional, & genuinely welcoming. The team strikes that perfect balance of attentiveness without being intrusive. They make you feel like a regular, even on your first visit.
In short: amazing food, impeccable pairings, & a staff that makes you want to come back again & again. A truly special place.
This place was fantastic. The ambiance is fantastic, warm & cozy. The service was impeccable, at times it felt like we had the entire staff taking care of us. My wife & I did the Chef's menu which was tailored a little bit for her tastes. The Seafood platter portion of the meal was excellent, & contained a great variety of items. For appetizers we had the Striped Bass & the Cucumbers which were both excellent. The main courses were also very good. Don't miss out on the carrots which came with the Swordfish & Black Cod which were both outstanding. dessert included the Profiteroles which were delicious. The wine list is excellent. Expensive, but well worth the cost!
