As a New Yorker & world traveler I do eat at lots of Michelin Guide recommended restaurants & this was absolutely top 5. You must do the chefs menu. Each dish we were wowed. All the seafood was so fresh, seasoning was perfection, & you get so much food for the price. We also ordered a bottle of wine that paired perfectly with the seafood.
& then theres the service...immaculate. It's an intimate space with very dim lighting, the server took his time explaining the menu answered all of our questions thoroughly. Pacing was PERFECT. Not too fast nor too slow.
DON'T SKIP DESSERT.
Birthday dinner, date night, girls night...great for any occasion.
I visited this restaurant in July during my trip to Montreal & it was an absolute highlight of the journey.
The staff were incredibly friendly & welcoming. The seafood was remarkably fresh & delicious & everything from the main dishes all the way to dessert was nothing short of perfect. Thanks to this wonderful dining experience, our day ended on such a high note, leaving us with truly fond memories of Montreal.
My fiance & I celebrated our engagement here on July 4th (just 2 hours after!) & we were blown away. My fiance called a couple days prior to tell them that he was planning on proposing before we arrived & whether a bottle of champagne could be waiting on the table for us.
Not only did this happen, but nearly every staff member in the restaurant came by our table to congratulate us. Everyone was so incredibly friendly & excited - it was truly contagious. Our server, Taylor, was INCREDIBLE. We opted for the Chef Menu (the $295 pp option) & neither of us have had such an amazing meal before. Every course was delicious, beautiful, & thoroughly described to us. We enjoyed a seafood platter, scallops, beet salad, beef carpaccio, sweetbreads, caviar, wagyu beef, snow crab, rabbit agnolotti, halibut, yellow beans, corn, & the flourless chocolate cake. Everything we ate was perfect.
By the end of the night, we were the last customers in there. Multiple staff members joined us at our table to provide a toast to us. A dessert was brought by with a candle, & we were told to each make a wish for our marriage. Finally, the staff turned on'Chapel of Love' & encouraged us to get up & dance in the empty restaurant. This was one of the most beautiful moments of my life & was incredibly moved.
The kindness & thoughtfulness of the staff that night is unparalleled. We will remember our experience at Garde Manger for many, many years to come & we can't wait to come back. Thank you from the bottom of our hearts!
Garde Manger was our favorite meal while in Montreal for a long weekend. We sat at the bar & ordered from the ala carte menu (we have a few food aversions that made us skip the chef's menu). We got the beets & crab for appetizer, the rabbit pasta & pork for the mains, creamed corn for the side (THE CHORIZO CRUMBS WERE AMAZING), & got the chocolate dessert. Our server/bartender was super helpful with recommendations, brought us wine that fit our tastes, & everything was spaced out nicely. Every dish was fantastic, unique, & left me wanting to come back again! I love a restaurant that also nails dessert, which this place did; the chocolate cake was hot, gooey in the middle & covered with delicious topping. 5 stars all around, not the mention the amazing 80's & early 90's music they play all night which sets a fun tone! If you are in Montreal & want a nice meal in a great setting, add this place to your list!
What does it mean when a restaurant elicits enough emotion to write a public review? It may mean it was life-changing, like our visit to Garde Manger last week. I know that sounds dramatic, but I finally understand true culinary art.
Each mouthful seemed to be the best thing I've ever eaten, only to be replaced by the next best bite. The deliciousness made me pause & forced me to live in the moment, trying to savor each flavor.
& it wasn't just the food. My husband chose Garde Manger to celebrate our anniversary. After strolling the streets of Old Montreal, we arrived at the restaurant, the outside so unassuming we had to check the address. We opened the door to warm sounds of murmured conversation & light music. We were greeted by David, who was just the first person of the many we encountered who made us feel like we were the evening's VIPs. I realize, of course, that each & every other guest must have felt the same way.
Time flew as Nicholas & his team took such care of us for our relaxed 2.5h dinner. Water glasses seemed to magicaly refill. Nicholas's wine suggestions were spot on. Hindsight delivered zero regrets in splurging for the chef's multi-course seasonal meal. We're so very glad we could experience every month-watering morsel, from the scallop & caviar amuse bouche through dessert. Seriously, I could list each thing we ate & rave.
The pause before the dessert course was a glow of satiation, & then...& Then! They played our wedding song as they brought out our desserts! I was brought to tears. Just - WOW!
It is a night we'll never ever forget; an experience we'll talk about for years to come. My husband, a foodie, is worried he's now set the bar too high for our future anniversaries ;-). He walked back to the kitchen to compliment the chefs. What a magnificent adventure! I wish you all could have tasted the chefs' beautiful art that night. You only live once - add Garde Manger to your list. We absolutely look forward to our next trip to this splendid restaurant!
Exceptional dinner at Garde Manger! The service was warm & personal, & the music & atmosphere were lively but comfortable. There are 4 choices of chef's menus based on number of courses & premium ingredients, & we chose the smaller premium menu which was $165, adapted for a pescatarian. All of the courses were shared plates & it was a huge amount of food. First was a chilled seafood platter with oysters, lobster, shrimp, mussels, sturgeon pâté, & smoked char rillete. Then we had 3 appetizers, including the signature snow crab on brioche. Two seasonal mains included halibut with morels & scallops with peas, accompanied by roasted carrots with stracciatella (could have been a vegetarian main). We finished with 2 desserts. Everything was amazing!
We were first met by the host David. He sat us, & even got me a pair of readers.
Our server was Nicholas. He was fantastic. Very informed, & steered me toward the pork. It was amazing. Nicholas explained all the finer details of each plate.
We finished with two desserts for the table. The chocolate cake was amazing.
My water was never empty. Such amazing service.
Highly recommend Menu Du Chef. An amazing 7 course & dessert dining experience. The seafood preparation was incredible, with every course a delight! The wine pairing married so well. It is a seafood focused restaurant but the hanger steak... also perfection. Truly an unforgettable meal! Very much appreciated the service staff -an equally huge part of this review. Thank you!
