I sat at the bar top & had the tasting menu. Everything tasted great & dishes were well thought out. They paced the courses perfectly. Service was top notch & attentive. I would definitely recommend Garden Manger to anyone. I will definitely return!
We made the trip from Manitoba to visit Garde Manger, & it was spectacular. It was a dining experience we will never forget. We had the chefs menu, & the food was incredible. It was the best meal we've ever had. The seafood was incredibly fresh, the dishes were creative & used ingredients in multiple ways that we would have never thought of, & everything was perfectly paced so that we had time to digest before the next course. The standout dish was the seafood platter, as everything was incredibly fresh, especially the scallops. The service was also incredible, as we were treated incredibly well by multiple staff members. This was more of a dining experience than a dinner, & we could not be happier that this restaurant greatly surpassed our high expectations. This would be the crown jewel of any city
We'd been wanting to try this place for quite a while, & overall it was a nice evening.
The atmosphere was cozy, with a dimly lit bistro feel. Unfortunately, we were seated in the back beside two very large, very loud tables, which made it difficult to hear each other throughout dinner.
We ordered a variety of dishes. The standout was definitely the snow crab brioche, it was my favourite dish of the night & something I'd absolutely recommend. The clams were alright but didn't really stand out, while the scallop entrée was disappointing for the price. It was served with only three scallops, which didn't feel like good value for a main course, & the price. My husband ordered a starter followed by the steak with Diane sauce. The steak was cooked perfectly & combined with the sauce made it an excellent dish.
The staff were friendly & attentive, though at times the service felt a little over-attentive. They stopped by our table very frequently to top up our water, even when we'd only taken a couple of sips, & our napkins were refolded several times throughout the meal. While we appreciated the attention to detail, it felt a bit excessive & took away from the relaxed dining experience.
Overall, it was a pleasant dinner. There were a few things that didn't quite hit the mark, but there were also some standout dishes that made the visit worthwhile.
One of the best meals I have ever had. Every dish was excellent but the halibut was a generous serving, cooked to perfection & was wonderfully flavorful. Appetizers & side dishes were all superb. We are only visiting Montreal for three days but this meal will undoubtedly be one of the true highlights of our trip.
Solid seafood, but a fairly disappointing Chef du Menu.
Came in on a Monday night for the Chef du Menu. They don't list the dishes upfront, but given the restaurant's focus, I naturally expected a heavy lean toward seafood. But not exactly. This wasn't a traditional tasting menu, but rather a standard array of small plates you'd find at any generic New American spot. Barely any creative inspiration, no unique ingredients, & honestly, surprisingly little seafood.
It did start strong with a massive seafood tower. Snow crab, lobster, mussels, oysters, & sturgeon dip. My favorite part was honestly just the local oysters. Sweeter & less briny than the typical New England or Maine oysters I'm used to.
The rest of the evening fell off a cliff a bit. Not a single memorable dish. All I can really remember is a blur of creative-looking, over-engineered vegetable plates.
Overall, a tad overpriced for what you get. Rolling the dice on the Chef du Menu was probably the wrong call. I've hit a lot of tasting menus across Montreal, & this was the only miss. No idea what the kitchen is aiming for with this format, but if you go, absolutely stick to the à la carte menu.
My friends & I have made Garde Manger our annual destination whenever we visit Montreal. I've personally been about six times, & this was our group's third visit together-our previous two experiences were outstanding.
Unfortunately, this most recent visit was very underwhelming.
Our reservation was at 9:30 PM (we had hoped for earlier, but nothing was available), & it took about an hour for our food to arrive. When it did, it was only lukewarm. Service also felt noticeably different this time. In past visits, the staff were warm & attentive, but during this experience our server felt less engaged with our table, which made the evening feel less welcoming overall.
I understand it was late in the evening, & perhaps the team was winding down, but the atmosphere lacked the warmth we had come to expect.
Typically, even if service is off, the food is what makes up for it-but unfortunately that wasn't the case this time. While the dishes were beautifully plated, the flavours fell short. Between our group, we ordered the chicken, swordfish, & hanger steak, & all three were noticeably salty. After checking with my friends, they shared the same impression.
All things considered, we're hoping this was just a one-off experience. However, it has made us second-guess our decision to continue making this our go-to restaurant in Montreal.
We upgraded to the most expensive tasting menu & the experience was confusing. We upgraded because we wanted more lobster. I'm not certain that's what we got. Our waiter seemed unable to clearly explain what the tasting menu included & whether there was any flexibility in asking for certain dishes. As courses came out, we were confused about how many appetizers & entrees there were. It would've been helpful to have something printed so we knew what to expect. We were disappointed with the wines by the glass selections, especially with respect to the white wines. The white wines we tasted were very dry. There did not seem to be any options for something off dry or fruity. The constant filling of our water glasses (after every sip) was off putting. It interrupted our conversations & created a disconnect during the meal. The food was outstanding.
Had a blast trying their tasting menu. It was a lot of food. Although it was some of the best seafood I've had, my most memorable courses were their vegetarian dishes, especially the chickory salad. The snow crab & octopus were quite unique & tasted great with amazing textures. Great cocktails as well & Felix was an amazing host. Cheers to Felix & rest of the staff for that last shot, it was an amazing end to a great meal
I came into Garde Manger extremely excited. Chuck Hughes is undeniably a talented chef, & expectations were high given the restaurant's reputation. Unfortunately, the experience didn't live up to it.
We opted for the $295 tasting menu per person & asked the bartender to curate a cocktail & wine pairing alongside it. For the price point which was well over $500 per person all in, the meal lacked focus & cohesion. None of the dishes truly stood out or felt memorable. The menu skewed surprisingly bland & safe, especially considering the bold, flavor driven cooking Chuck Hughes is known for.
The pairing felt sloppy & disconnected from the food, more like an afterthought than a considered progression that elevated the courses. At this level of dining, execution & intent matter just as much as ingredients & that consistency wasn't there.
This isn't bad food by any means, but it is wildly overpriced for the experience delivered. Given the cost, I expected sharper flavors, clearer vision, & a more polished overall experience
Tasting menu was 10/10 with excellent dishes. Warm service & felt well taken care of the entire time.
