I sat at the bar top & had the tasting menu. Everything tasted great & dishes were well thought out. They paced the courses perfectly. Service was top notch & attentive. I would definitely recommend Garden Manger to anyone. I will definitely return!
Garde Manger was our favorite meal while in Montreal for a long weekend. We sat at the bar & ordered from the ala carte menu (we have a few food aversions that made us skip the chef's menu). We got the beets & crab for appetizer, the rabbit pasta & pork for the mains, creamed corn for the side (THE CHORIZO CRUMBS WERE AMAZING), & got the chocolate dessert. Our server/bartender was super helpful with recommendations, brought us wine that fit our tastes, & everything was spaced out nicely. Every dish was fantastic, unique, & left me wanting to come back again! I love a restaurant that also nails dessert, which this place did; the chocolate cake was hot, gooey in the middle & covered with delicious topping. 5 stars all around, not the mention the amazing 80's & early 90's music they play all night which sets a fun tone! If you are in Montreal & want a nice meal in a great setting, add this place to your list!
Visited as a solo diner & the service from both the host & bartender was wonderful! I cannot overstate how incredible the carrots were… ordered carrots & octopus & it was a delightful combo & perfect amount of food for one! I will absolutely be back!
What does it mean when a restaurant elicits enough emotion to write a public review? It may mean it was life-changing, like our visit to Garde Manger last week. I know that sounds dramatic, but I finally understand true culinary art.
Each mouthful seemed to be the best thing I've ever eaten, only to be replaced by the next best bite. The deliciousness made me pause & forced me to live in the moment, trying to savor each flavor.
& it wasn't just the food. My husband chose Garde Manger to celebrate our anniversary. After strolling the streets of Old Montreal, we arrived at the restaurant, the outside so unassuming we had to check the address. We opened the door to warm sounds of murmured conversation & light music. We were greeted by David, who was just the first person of the many we encountered who made us feel like we were the evening's VIPs. I realize, of course, that each & every other guest must have felt the same way.
Time flew as Nicholas & his team took such care of us for our relaxed 2.5h dinner. Water glasses seemed to magicaly refill. Nicholas's wine suggestions were spot on. Hindsight delivered zero regrets in splurging for the chef's multi-course seasonal meal. We're so very glad we could experience every month-watering morsel, from the scallop & caviar amuse bouche through dessert. Seriously, I could list each thing we ate & rave.
The pause before the dessert course was a glow of satiation, & then...& Then! They played our wedding song as they brought out our desserts! I was brought to tears. Just - WOW!
It is a night we'll never ever forget; an experience we'll talk about for years to come. My husband, a foodie, is worried he's now set the bar too high for our future anniversaries ;-). He walked back to the kitchen to compliment the chefs. What a magnificent adventure! I wish you all could have tasted the chefs' beautiful art that night. You only live once - add Garde Manger to your list. We absolutely look forward to our next trip to this splendid restaurant!
Solid seafood, but a fairly disappointing Chef du Menu.
Came in on a Monday night for the Chef du Menu. They don't list the dishes upfront, but given the restaurant's focus, I naturally expected a heavy lean toward seafood. But not exactly. This wasn't a traditional tasting menu, but rather a standard array of small plates you'd find at any generic New American spot. Barely any creative inspiration, no unique ingredients, & honestly, surprisingly little seafood.
It did start strong with a massive seafood tower. Snow crab, lobster, mussels, oysters, & sturgeon dip. My favorite part was honestly just the local oysters. Sweeter & less briny than the typical New England or Maine oysters I'm used to.
The rest of the evening fell off a cliff a bit. Not a single memorable dish. All I can really remember is a blur of creative-looking, over-engineered vegetable plates.
Overall, a tad overpriced for what you get. Rolling the dice on the Chef du Menu was probably the wrong call. I've hit a lot of tasting menus across Montreal, & this was the only miss. No idea what the kitchen is aiming for with this format, but if you go, absolutely stick to the à la carte menu.
My mom & I sat at the bar & had the absolute best evening. The service was warm, inviting & fun. In a league of its own, really. Vibes were high from the moment we sat down. The food was surprising & so delicious. We will be talking about the beet dish & the pickle chips for some time. I love that the menu has minimal descriptions so encourages the explanation from the server. Pacing was wonderful. Merci, Garde Manger - Hope to be back one day!
Absolutely outstanding experience from start to finish. My husband & I did the chef's seasonal tasting menu & every single dish we tried was bursting with flavor & executed to perfection. The seafood, in particular, was very fresh. The cocktails were also on point!
What truly elevated the evening, though, was the service. The staff were exceptional: attentive, knowledgeable, & genuinely passionate about what they do. We felt completely taken care of the entire time.
The vibe & atmosphere were just as impressive. Sitting at the bar made the experience even better; it felt immersive & exciting, like being right in the heart of it all.
This place exceeded all expectations. Easily one of the best dining experiences I've had. I would highly recommend it.
Had an amazing dinner & drinks this week. First time there & came highly recommended by coworkers in Calgary :) 10/10 will come back next time I'm in Montreal. Killian was a fantastic bartender & the staff were super kind!
Food was good,, took 4 course meal. Not every bite is a party in your mouth but there were a few item that were amazing.
The reason for the 3 star is ambiance. The front portion of the restaurant has nice decor & romantic vibe worthy of paying over $150 per person. However if you are unlucky & get seated at the back of the restaurant, well they should give a discount. It has an old bar look & the decor does not match the front.
I came into Garde Manger extremely excited. Chuck Hughes is undeniably a talented chef, & expectations were high given the restaurant's reputation. Unfortunately, the experience didn't live up to it.
We opted for the $295 tasting menu per person & asked the bartender to curate a cocktail & wine pairing alongside it. For the price point which was well over $500 per person all in, the meal lacked focus & cohesion. None of the dishes truly stood out or felt memorable. The menu skewed surprisingly bland & safe, especially considering the bold, flavor driven cooking Chuck Hughes is known for.
The pairing felt sloppy & disconnected from the food, more like an afterthought than a considered progression that elevated the courses. At this level of dining, execution & intent matter just as much as ingredients & that consistency wasn't there.
This isn't bad food by any means, but it is wildly overpriced for the experience delivered. Given the cost, I expected sharper flavors, clearer vision, & a more polished overall experience
