Had an amazing dinner & drinks this week. First time there & came highly recommended by coworkers in Calgary :) 10/10 will come back next time I'm in Montreal. Killian was a fantastic bartender & the staff were super kind!
Food was good,, took 4 course meal. Not every bite is a party in your mouth but there were a few item that were amazing.
The reason for the 3 star is ambiance. The front portion of the restaurant has nice decor & romantic vibe worthy of paying over $150 per person. However if you are unlucky & get seated at the back of the restaurant, well they should give a discount. It has an old bar look & the decor does not match the front.
I came into Garde Manger extremely excited. Chuck Hughes is undeniably a talented chef, & expectations were high given the restaurant's reputation. Unfortunately, the experience didn't live up to it.
We opted for the $295 tasting menu per person & asked the bartender to curate a cocktail & wine pairing alongside it. For the price point which was well over $500 per person all in, the meal lacked focus & cohesion. None of the dishes truly stood out or felt memorable. The menu skewed surprisingly bland & safe, especially considering the bold, flavor driven cooking Chuck Hughes is known for.
The pairing felt sloppy & disconnected from the food, more like an afterthought than a considered progression that elevated the courses. At this level of dining, execution & intent matter just as much as ingredients & that consistency wasn't there.
This isn't bad food by any means, but it is wildly overpriced for the experience delivered. Given the cost, I expected sharper flavors, clearer vision, & a more polished overall experience
Great spot in old town Montreal. I was there solo for less than 24 hours in a work trip & was looking to have a nice meal. I got the 6 course tasting menu with the blue crab toast add on. Would say that the crab toast & the seafood platter were my favorite dishes but everything was well made & delicious! That said, I felt the sauce on the last dish was a bit too heavy in butter & not well seasoned enough. Overall though, I had a good meal. It was on the pricy side but worth it!
Also the espresso martinis fantastic, & if you can, I'd sit at the bar & hang with Emma! She's the best!!
Merci beaucoup! What a fantastic experience. I ordered the chef's choice & was not disappointed from appetizers to dessert, every single bite was absolutely delicious. The bartender, a young woman, was both professional & impressively knowledgeable about wine & cocktails. The service, ambiance & music top notch. Highly recommended if you only have time for one restaurant in Montreal, make it this one!
Garde Manger is a must! My husband & I were fortunate to receive the recommendation to dine at Garde Manger from a chef friend of ours. We did the 5 course chef's menu & the food was plentiful & outstanding. We sat at the back bar with Felix at the helm, seated next to two other couples, all of whom were there also celebrating an anniversary, cheers! Nico managed music from the front of house & the whole experience was top notch. Will definitely be returning.
I've been going each year for my birthday, but this was the best yet. The lovely bartender Emma recommended the snow crab along with my chef's menu, & I'm happy I followed it. The drinks were amazing, the service impeccable, & the food unbelievable. Please try the snow crab!!
Absolute top notch meal. The food is exceptional & the service is even better. Our host was warm & kind & funny, & our servers were knowledgeable & engaging. Our favourite was Emma, our bar server. She treated us like family & went the extra mile with everything. The food - they treat vegetables with the respect they deserve. All the food was sumptuous, but the veg for me was the pinnacle. Hubby would say the lobster & Japanese wagyu were the best. Both were excellent I'll concede. Go here. You'll love it.
The dining experience at Garde Manger was superb, especially as a gluten free guest. Every staff member we interacted with was extremely professional, knowledgeable, welcoming, & a joy to speak to. We sat at the bar on the far end of the restaurant where seafood towers are assembled in front of you. I tried the heirloom tomatoes, octopus, French fries, swordfish, & chocolate cake. Every dish was certainly worth ordering again & we wished we booked both of our dinners in Montreal there for our quick trip. So happy to have found this gem & would recommend! Thanks for a wonderful evening!
We sat at the bar Friday night & Jean(I hope I spelt his name correctly) was a fantastic bartender & paired wines with our meal perfectly. & he made a great paper plane!!
