We'll keep this one short & simple, like they do in Italy:
The dishes - authentic in the best possible way. It's like they have a portal to Napoli in the kitchen.
The portions - big (not America big, but EU big for sure) & respectful.
The taste - like we just discovered Italy. Like a small restaurant you find by mistake in a small village along the way to Milano, that becomes the star of your trip. Kudos to the kitchen crew👏
The service - exceptional. Noah didn't just serviced us, but hosted us the best way possible.
In a city that looks like it's in a middle of an identity crisis, the visit to Amerigo felt very real & authentic, the place was very welcoming, & this is the first spot we're sure to go back to during the trip.
Exceptional! I've been to Amerigo so many times for lunch & finally went for dinner. The pasta is just flawless. The ingredients are fresh, it's cooked to perfection. Noah our waiter was absolutely amazing. Professional, courteous, timely. Really made our experience that much better.
We went there for supper on a Thursday evening. There wasn't a lineup, so we asked for a table for two. We were told the wait would be about 15 minutes, which was perfectly fine.
I then asked if we could sit at the bar & have a drink while waiting for our table. To my surprise, we were told that if we sat at the bar, we would have to remain there, even if a table became available.
I politely asked how that made sense, considering we were already customers & would be purchasing drinks while we waited. The response was that they needed to prioritize people who walked in looking for a table.
As someone who owned & operated a restaurant for 15 years, I found this policy very difficult to understand. If a customer is already in your restaurant spending money, why wouldn't you move them to a table when one becomes available? You never know who that customer is or how much they may end up spending. We could have easily ordered an $80 bottle of wine & a $300 meal.
We decided to stay & eat at the bar. The food was okay, but unfortunately the first impression & the way we were welcomed left a negative impression that affected the overall experience.
Just some constructive feedback from a local NGDer. I hope management reconsiders this policy, because it doesn't seem to put the customer first.
One of my favorite things about this restaurant is its location. It's in one of my favorite neighborhoods in Montreal, & in the summer the atmosphere on Monkland is hard to beat. The restaurant itself was packed for a Tuesday night, which made for a great vibe. If you can grab a table on the patio, I'd definitely recommend it. I also liked the casual Italian bistro feel of the space.
The service was friendly & efficient. A small touch I really appreciated was that they leave a bottle of water on the table so you can refill your own glass instead of waiting for service, especially nice on a warm summer evening. They also serve a fresh house salad before the main course, which was a nice way to start the meal, although I found the dressing a bit too salty.
I ordered the carbonara special & was really looking forward to it, but it didn't quite meet my expectations. The guanciale was a little too burnt for my taste, & the cheese was very strong & overpowered the dish; I suspect there was more than just Pecorino & Parmesan. Overall, my pasta, as well as my friend's clam & shrimp pasta, were both a bit too salty. That said, the fresh pasta itself was cooked perfectly. The standout dish of the night was definitely the mushroom gnocchi, absolutely delicious & the one I'd recommend ordering.
The drinks were good (you can't really go wrong with an Aperol Spritz!), & overall I enjoyed the experience. I'd happily come back to try more of the menu, as we've only sampled three pasta dishes. Between the atmosphere, the location, & the welcoming service, I think this place deserves another visit.
