At 316 avenue du Mont-Royal Est, we've been loving the kouing-amann for over 30 years.
A true neighborhood café, the owner and employees work together to offer gourmet pastries (made with passion!), fresh sandwiches and the famous kouing-amann.
Let yourself be tempted by a moment of greed in a warm family atmosphere that has lasted for nearly three decades.
Au Kouing-Amann earns widespread praise for its namesake pastry, with the kouign amann described as perfectly caramelized on the outside and melt-in-your-mouth soft and buttery inside, often hailed as one of the best pastries in Montreal. The menu also shines with croissants and other flaky specialties, though the star remains the signature treat, and warm service plus a cozy, compact setting are frequently noted. Busy periods, small seating, and occasional limited hours are common caveats, but queues are seen as a sign of popularity and the wait is often deemed worth it. Overall, Au Kouing-Amann is described as a must visit for pastry lovers, delivering consistent flavor, authentic Breton influence, and a memorable bakery experience that locals and visitors alike would return to.
My mouth had not yet tasted such a delight until I bit into this crispy yet pillowy bomb of butter & caramel. As crisp & delicate as the autumn leaves outside the shop window, & as enchantingly sweet as an afternoon rain when you have to clean the house but do a crossword puzzle instead. I shall dream of tomorrow, when I eat the other half.
This place is barely ever open so I'm glad I finally made it here for a breakfast pastry. The kouign amann is both crunchy on the outside & yet fluffy on the inside, sweet without being saccharine, absolutely delicious & totally worth the visit.

Pâtisserie Au Kouing Amann is one of our favourite pastry shops in the city. They have the worst hours (closed Sunday to Tuesday) but their kouign amann are amazing.
Grabbed a kouign amann ($3.25) & croissant au fromage ($3.50). Flaky, delicious goodness. You won't find a better kouign amann!
Best for Kauing Amann. THey have a very small sitting, sometimes I dont get available. But the pastries tastes over comes all of it. They are one of the best in Montreal. Must try. You will not regret...
Tasty & delicious!
I am definitely coming back.
Unfortunately they only had these two options around 15.00 (it closes 16 30), so next time I'm coming here earliee to try other other pastries.
