At 316 avenue du Mont-Royal Est, we've been loving the kouing-amann for over 30 years.
A true neighborhood café, the owner and employees work together to offer gourmet pastries (made with passion!), fresh sandwiches and the famous kouing-amann.
Let yourself be tempted by a moment of greed in a warm family atmosphere that has lasted for nearly three decades.
Au Kouing-Amann is widely praised for its namesake pastry, a buttery, caramelized treat with a crispy crust and a soft, melt-in-your-mouth center, frequently described as the best Kouign Amann in Montreal, with croissants and almond croissants also highlighted; the shop is small and cozy, with limited seating and a tendency toward takeout, while the staff are consistently friendly and helpful; opening hours can be limited or vary by day, so planning ahead is advised; overall, reviews celebrate freshness, balance, and rich butter flavors, making Au Kouing-Amann a must-visit for pastry lovers in Montreal and often worth buying a whole Kouign Amann to take home.
I loved the cozy vibe of this space. It was a pretty small cafe, two tables but I was able to get seating as most people came for take outs. The Koiugn Amann was so yummy! I really appreciated that the staff were so nice & patient to speak French slowly to me as they could tell I was trying to practice 😅
It would've been a shame if they didn't do their namesake justice...but they absolutely knocked it out of the park! Excellent Kouign Amann with a crispy sweet exterior & flaky buttery interior. Would've loved to also try their croissants but they sell out quick!
8 years ago I stumbled into this Cafe accidentally & had one of the best desserts I had ever eaten. Now 8 years later I had the pleasure of eating it again. Nowhere else I have tried kouign amann comes close to the pastry here. Crackling, chewy crust, & an almost custardy soft inside. 10/10 would eat again. A must eat for any Montreal trip.

We've been talking about this place for 8 years since we stumbled upon it during our first trip. Still as good as we remember it. Can't go to Montreal without a stop here.
Ok let me tell you guys, if you see that little bakery & dont stop, you are stupide,😅 no sorry, seriously it remind me Europ when i was in vacation, the taste is absolutly amezing & i understand why there is so many peoples during the day, im here since 10 minutes & i seen little over 25 persons. So i suggest alot to stop by & ask for a Kouing Amann with a coffee or hot chocolate, you wont regreet it at all. I give 10 stars on 5. Enjoy.😋 adress 316, mont-royal east.
I just have to thank you. My second time at the place, I live in Halifax, & I was there in August & now in March. The breads are simply delicious, the croissants melt in your mouth. But what I have to be grateful for is that last Marco I went with my daughter & she took the risk of placing our order in French (her mother tongue is Portuguese, but she learned to read, write, & speak in English). It seemed to me to be one of the chefs who served us & he was super attentive, he realized that she was out of her comfort zone but he let her order & it was great. As a result, she was very proud of her & I just have to thank her & recommend the place. Congratulations.
Wow. One of the best things I've ever eaten. Bought a half large to take home. Followed the instructions.. perfection! In a busy area, so parking is not easy, but worth it. Highly recommended.
This review is long overdue... I visited the bakery back in November while on holidays in Montreal. I tried everything they had & have been dreaming of it all since. The standards were set too high & now I can't enjoy a croissant anywhere else (writing to you from NYC) I would return to Montreal just for this bakery. Thank you for the unforgettable food experience
Stopped in on a weekday morning about 2 hours after opening. Was able to pick up a good selection of pastries & 2 of the small kougin amann. Some things were sold out but we still had enough to choose from. Service was efficient, & they even made sure to give us the freshest pastries. A good place to grab & go - not a lot of seating, if that's what you're looking for.
ABSOLUTELY DELICIOUS. Perfect balance of sweet & salty, fluffy & crispy, buttery & flaky...all the things 🥹 Whatever you plan to order, get extra. Especially if you are visiting. Yes, it is that good.
