TULA translates to'Balanced' & that's exactly what this restaurant is all about. An extraordinary culinary experience - five stars all the way!! Such homely preparation, felt light yet tasty. Highly recommended for wholesome & scrumptious food lovers!
Food:
This isn't your typical Indian restaurant serving the usual paneer, butter naan & Jira rice. If that's what you're after, you might want to look elsewhere. But if you're seeking something truly unique, this place delivers in every way. The menu is thoughtfully curated, reflecting genuine passion & care in every dish. We liked it so much that we ate there 3 times during our 3 day stay in Montreal. Here are the things we tried & absolutely loved. I normally like to rank dishes but all dishes came #1.
- Koshimbir - a refreshing salad
- Grandma's Special Curry - reminded me of a version of avial
- Chapati - very home made feel
- Ragda Patties - yummy chat
- Tomato Soup - so good, my daughter loved it
- Gulkand Panna Cotta
- lunch thali - comes with 4 curries, 1 salad, rice, roti & dessert.
- jackfruit biriyani - this was out of the world.
- Burger - crispy & delicious
- Bombay sandwich - we made this to go & ate it after about 8 hours & it was scrumptious
- Weekend Brunch Thali - pongal, sambhar, chutney, desset. I dont know how he gets such diverse food SO right
- Lentil idlis - they had shredded carrots & green beans. So thoughtful about making healthy food.
- Ragi dosa - this is not in the menu but the owner surprised us with it. SO good.
- Mango lassi - tasted even better than the dairy mango lassi. This was made with coconut milk yogurt that they make it themselves. I mean talk about the incredible amount of detail & care poured into creating it.
- Hibiscus & ginger drink -
- Chai - this came with the cutest sugar container on the side (see picture). Owner said he got them Bali when he was travelling.
Host, Service & Place:
Exceptional service & hospitality! We arrived about 30 minutes before closing, yet were welcomed with genuine kindness. There was no rush - we were encouraged to take our time exploring the menu. The host, Abhishek, patiently walked us through each item, clearly passionate about the food & the experience he offers. What stood out most was - he even recommended other restaurants in town that he personally likes. How often do you see a restaurant owner do that? It was clear he is not running the business just for the money. Once we placed our order, the food arrived promptly & was absolutely delightful. It is a beautiful, boutique restaurant. The interior is beautifully designed with tasteful decor that creates a calming & inviting ambiance.
Overall, a great experience.
Update after a year:
Went again after a year & this place did not disappoint. Food & the owner/host were outstanding. They make such unique interesting tasty recipes - one thing we tried was tender coconut payasam. It's not in the regular menu, was a special - It was amazing. Referred this place to a friend who took her family & they too absolutely loved it. Highly recommend this place!
I'm speechless! No words could ever be enough to express just how amazing this restaurant was. From start to finish, I have absolutely no complaints.
The ambiance is so warm, comforting, & welcoming. A special mention to Abi, who took the time to explain the menu to us so patiently. His calm, warm, & genuine personality really stood out. He is someone who truly cares about his customers, listens to them, & makes you feel valued exactly how hospitality should be.
You can tell that he is passionate about what he does & genuinely loves his work.
& the food… my goodness! I would honestly say, go for anything! Everything, from the specials to the regular menu, was absolutely delicious. Every bite tasted like comfort & was made with so much care.
Thank you so much for the kindness & wonderful experience. We will definitely be coming back! ❤?
I went to Tula a week ago & I very much enjoyed the experience.
I was greeted by a gentleman called Alex who has several roles from what I could observe later.
Before taking my order, Alex offered to explain to me the items on the menu.
I took him up on the offer but towards the end I started to feel sorry for him & his throat & I stopped him to spare him further labour.
I really appreciated the effort he made & thanked him for it.
I settled on Black Chickpea & Black Eyed Pea Ghassi with chapati.
The food arrived with the curry & one chapati.
It was delicious.
I hadn't realized that there's just the one chapati with the order & so delayed ordering two further chapatis at 2 dollars each.
Although the other nice lady who works there came with the chapatis without me having to wait too long, I must say I was salivating because I couldn't wait to start eating again - so good was the dish !
All in all I am glad I found Tula & I look forward to visiting again soon.
Merci !
Came in today for lunch-what a wonderful experience! Abhishek, the owner, was like a walking warm hug: so kind & thoughtful. Rajiv, also part of the team, was equally accommodating & a joy to chat with.
My friend & I ordered the lunch thali, mango lassi, & grandma's coconut curry. Delicious! You can tell the food is made with love-homey, satisfying, & great for your digestion (the herbs & spices were spot on).
Highly recommended. I'll be back-next up is their popular jackfruit biryani. Ugh, I'm already salivating! Looooove this place. Thanks for the wonderful meal & hospitality! Xx
