This place is nothing short of amazing. Far exceeded my already high expectations. Kathleen & the entire crew's knowledge & service were top notch. The wine pairings were exquisite & the food transcendent. A very special place!View more
Read reviews & it sounded great. Food was excellent- well prepared & seasoned. Goat ragu & sweetbreads were outstanding. It is quite pricey- we had 3 small dishes & one larger plus 2 cocktails & 2 glasses of wine for 2 was over 300 Canadian with tax & tip. Neighoirhood is funky. Would recommend for special occassions.View more
I've been wanting to try this restaurant for awhile. I actually got introduced to this restaurant from looking at Chef Vincent Gee (Sushi Nishinokaze)'s posts, & I decided to give it a try because of this. Upon further research, I found that this restaurant was very highly ranked in Canada's 100 Best Restaurants!
Beba is a small, intimate restaurant in the heart of Verdun serving food & drink inspired by the Spanish & Italian cultures that settled in Argentina?. Argentine-born brothers Ari (former chef de cuisine, Liverpool House) & Pablo Schor (former barman at Vancouver's Bao Bei) share sophisticated versions of their Italian- & Spanish-inflected childhood favourites.
The menu for this restaurant changes every week, so I wasn't able to look on Instagram for any inspirations to help me order.
My buddy & I tried:
•empanada
•bone marrow pan con tomate, anchovy
•strozzapreti lamb ragu, fava beans, mint
•pork chop kohlrabi, pancetta, white wine
My favourite order here is the bone marrow. It's so delicious & fatty, & it goes so well with the sourness of the anchovy, taste of tomato, crisp of bread.
The empanada was delicious too. The strozzapreti was a bit too salty in my opinion, & not that special. The pork chop was prepared pretty well; despite being a thick cut of pork chop, the meat was all nice & tender.View more
Beba was the single best meal on our yearly Montreal trip. Service was perfect. Atmosphere was intimate & fun. Wine suggestions were on point. The non-alcoholic coktail had the complexity of a real cocktail. Most importantly, the food was perfect & just incredible. They perfectly accomodated my gluten free (celiac) patner. The flavors are familiar but done in a novel way. Portions are generous for a restaurant in this price tier. The single best thing that I ate on the entire trip was the montadito - basically a reimagined version of bagel & lox. It's probably the best bite of food I've had this year. I've been thinking of it ever since. I'd return just for that. I would caution that the gluten free version (sans bagel) with cucumber is not really a good substitute. Even some gluten free toast would have made it really good if not the exact same as the real deal. I kinda wish that places would have some gluten free bread frozen but on hand for these kinds of substitutes. Sometimes, you just need bread/toast for texture; even if it's the inferior gluten free kind. Boulangerie Le Marquis is doing some pretty awesome stuff so maybe that could be a good partnership. Anywho, Beba is added to my list of places I have to hit when in Montreal. Bravo.
Only bad part was a SUPER loud dude behind us who didn't shut up for 2 hours but what can you do...View more
Incredibly creative food, nothing stuffy about the atmosphere, excellent service & attention, plus a very extensive wine list.View more
Food was amazing, the waiter Mikael was really nice & very informative. He helped us pick the right foods & pair it with the right wine. Would highly recommend.View more
Food is fabulous, wine by glass - very nice, match the goods well. Table was cleaned very dishes. Awesome experienceView more
While on a short stint in Montreal, I had the pleasure of dining at Restaurant Beba. This little gem seemed tucked away from our'Plateau' lodgings, but it was well worth the trip. We were greeted by an exceptionally warm staff & plate after plate left us in stunned silence. Aided by one of their delicious wines, we spent much of our evening doing our best barstool boogie to their near-perfect playlist. I want to give a special shoutout to Mel for treating us like old friends & honestly, I could eat the Maitake w Hollendaise dish until the end of time. Merci beaucoup!View more
Loved this place! Amazing food, lovely service & staff. Good wine. Great spot. Can't miss.View more
Everything was INSANE! Every ingredient used was thought & the quality was insane! Each dish was explained with details of the techniques used & where did the products come from. It was crazy! We had two from the classique: the KNISH ; the cured mackerel on a sesame bun I.N.S.A.N.E it was soooo good! Like each flavour was perfectly balanced & everything came through! Third was the beef tartare! CRAZY! So fresh, herby, lemon, with the perfect garlicky well toasted sourdough! With ANCHOVIES! In a really comforting way it satisfied my PIZZA CRAVING! & the last was QUEBEC LAMB two ways. The first was lamb belly sandwiched & seared with black trumpet & there was the T bone equivalent of the lamb all served with sautéed greens topped with a pine nut+raisin+capers gremlot & a red wine jus! This whole experience was amazing & I am SO GRATEFUL! It was truly a WORK OF ART!View more
Basically the best restaurant in Montreal. The food is always on point with amazing top quality ingredients. The service is friendly, the drinks & wine recs always hit the spot & the atmosphere is super cozy. We recommend this place to everyone we know.View more
Went here a while ago for a birthday. Sat at the bar. Some of the best service I've ever had. Not at all overbearing or pretentious, just very friendly with great recommendations. Awesome bar menu. Think we drank beer, wine, & liquor (& paid for it the next day...), but they had excellent choices for all, even some fancier import sharing bottles of beer. The food itself was excellent quality & well-made, but lacking a real "stand-out" flavor. Partner had an empanada to start which he said was one of the best he's had, but mentioned his chicken main dish was a bit one-note. I had a pasta myself which, again, was well-constructed, but a bit plain. Portions are quite good for a place of this price point, an app & a main each certainly sufficed. Pretty lacking on vegetarian options, but they were very accommodating upon request. Overall, though the food didn't blow my mind, I would 100% go back for the vibes & the staff.View more
Beba isn't so much a restaurant, but more an extension of the owners' own kitchen. Although this place takes its roots mainly from Italian, Spanish, & Argentinian cultures, I think they can claim a little French inspiration as the term "Bon Vivant" is exactly how I would describe the duo behind Beba. Ari & Pablo are exceptionally skilled in the art of hospitality & the rest of their team does not fall short on delivering the same. The definition of unpretentious yet highly attentive service. Super patient, knowledgeable, & willing to accommodate vegetarian diet without fuss (& certainly without serving just salad). The dishes are not overly complex, sometimes only 3-4 ingredients, but they are extremely precise & invoke wonderful emotions. The passion of Ari, Pablo, & their team is strongly conveyed in everything they put in front of you & their eyes would light up while discussing a specific ingredient or wine producer. Having tried a lot of restaurants in Montreal, this place is our new benchmark & even sits above some of the best restaurants we have visited abroad. Our only regret is not coming here sooner! Aside from cocktails, we let the chef & the bar decide what we ate & drank & I can't suggest this approach enough. Price tag on the experience is not low, but worth every penny & we honestly expected a way higher bill with what was brought out. This was a birthday dinner, & we didn't even let the staff know until the end. We forgot to mention it when we arrived but as the night went on, we were treated like royalty & didn't even think to mention it! Although, this seemed to be the normal level of service for all patrons. Thank you for the wonderful experience & until next time!View more
Thanks for having us, a Saturday to enjoy hard work in a hard working restaurant! The food, the wine & the view! 😎👍🍷View more
Totally delicious, modern, innovative food & great wineView more
Not sure food is the star here given extensive wine & cocktail menu. While small & Cozy, feels more like a bar than restaurant. Food ingredients were top notch, but presentation was "flat". Service, while efficient, lacked warmth & a certain degree of class given the prices.View more
5 star all around! Outstanding service, out of this world wine list & beautiful food. The restaurant offers cozy vibe & unique dishes created with top quality seasonal ingredients. One of the best restaurant Montreal has to offer!View more
Food was delicious & of high quality. Stands on its own alongside other greats in Montreal (like Vin Mon lapin for example, which we had just visited the night before Beba). We had tartare, mushrooms, ragu, & asparagus. Cocktails to start & a beautiful bottle of wine. Our server was sensational. A father who apparently lives down the street, he was kind, very engaging, providing all the rich detail tailored to the guests level of interest. The location & clean/crisp but warm/cozy interior makes it feel like a neighbourhood gem rather than a well trodden (or tired) institution. We had exactly the kind of fantastic dining experience that keeps us coming back to Montreal. Well done Beba!View more
Beba never fails to deliver an outstanding dining experience. The waitstaff are casual, but seriously know their wines & propose superb pairings with the unique dishes that are Beba's signature. Incredible value, highly recommended.View more
Amazing service, cocktails, wine & service. My wife with dietary allergies was easily accommodated. Heavily recommended.
Amazing dinner at Beba!! Everyone on the staff was smart, funny, relaxed, professional, & served us with an easygoing charm that made us feel right at home. We weren't pressured to order too many dishes (we shared everything), & the recommended wine was delish. We shared a salad (great), an empanada (even better), & the cotto with pickled asparagus (my late addition, couldn't resist, & an excellent choice, IMHO) to start. I had the rabbit for my main, only the 2nd time I've tried it, & it was so damn tender & perfectly (lightly) seasoned. But my wife's cavatelli with a beef ragu was to die for. One of the best pasta dishes I've sampled in a long, long time. Tender, flavorful, OMG. Run don't walk.View more
Hidden gem in the city. Everything is so different & delicious. FOOD: (menu changed) • Beef Tounge: crunchy but so tender. I'm impressed that it's appetizer but it's so big. Quite overly seasoned with salt. But overall this's my favorite. • Oysters mushrooms: they steamed it for a while before quickly stir fried it, that makes the mushroom keep it jucy, fresh flavor & crunchy. • Beef cheek: so tender & delicious. The fat flavor was balanced out with the acidic taste of red wine & slightly bitterness of the sausage. • Flan: not bad but could be better. It's quite sweet with both caramel sauce & caramel cream • Chocolate tart: very rich chocolate flavor. Not a big fan of chocolate tart but this's pretty good one. SERVICE: great service, very friendly & chatty waiter. VIBE: This place is tiny & not for big group. There're only about 5 small tables & some bar seats.View more
Overall a satisfying experience. Lived up to the hype food & atmosphere wise. The flan was really out of this world. Everything else was unique & delicious. Small & cozy joint with a very warm ambiance. Deducted one star because we felt like we were actually being kicked out once our 2 hr limit hit. Understand the popularity & limited seating space, but I had to basically gulp down my wine while getting up to leave because we were rushed with them handing us our coats at the table within seconds the receipts printed. Appreciate that the waitress took her time to go through the menu & brought us additional wine options after we already settled on a bottle, but looking back, I think we would've preferred to have that time back to not feel rushed & enjoy the experience at the end. Didn't feel like there was too much effort to explain or try to accommodate us & that took away from the experience at the end unfortunately.View more
Staff are attentive without being overbearing. The atmosphere is somehow welcoming, casual & sophisticated at the same time, not pretentious at all. Food is amazing!! I've been a few times & each time I've said "this might be the best.. pork... brisket... tagliatelle ... I've ever had in my life." The cocktails are delicious & well balanced + good wines, beers & other spirits by the glass (great selections of digestifs). Definitely $$$ but well worth the money for the impeccable service & food. It is definitely a first choice for me for special occasions!View more
Beba is like food Disneyland for me. I wish I lived in Montreal so I could make this my regular dinner place. The rabbit gnudi were amazing, as was the ginormous slab of seared sweetbreads. Wine pairing was a bit off this time & would've preferred a more gastronomic wine if that makes any sense, but the food was excellent enough that I'm not upset about it.View more
After the meal the girlfriend & I ranked this in our top 3 restaurents of montreal it reminded us of a restaurent in Madrid. It's small & cosy, our table wasn't ready which wasn't a big deal but they apologized & served us each a glass of wine while we waited. We sat in front of the kitchen & enjoyed watching every dish come out. When we ordered the waitress Bianca suggested to change the order of the dishes to truly appreciate the flavors. Then the barman Antoine suggested us some diggestives acording to our tastes. I'm Argentinian & I can vouch the empanadas were amazing. The dishes came out one after the other with enough time in between to appreciate each one & have a conversation.View more
Bravo! Everything was absolutely perfect, went for my birthday. The food was phenomenal – fresh, local, decadent & refined with happy little surprises along the way – great wine selection & cocktails, stellar service (shoutout to Evan especially), & a playlist whose mild & pleasant dissonance with the fine dining digs are the perfect final touch to create its charming, warm & laid back ambiance. An absolute must-go, not to be missed!View more
I was treated poorly by the hostess (glasses; dark brown hair) at Beba. I called Beba to tell them I was running late as they ask you to do on Resy & I was told about an hour before leaving for the restaurant that I no longer had my reservation.
I had made my reservation a month ago.. I do not appreciate being told the Day Of that my reservation has been cancelled. I had a friend from Winnipeg visiting so this was a major disappointment.
In comparison the reservation I made at Mon Lapin also a month ago on Resy there were no issues. I was not called/ emailed & asked to confirm in advance. When I got to Mon Lapin I got a table inside as I had expected. I didn't have the Rules changed on me.
Beba called & emailed the day of with no prior notice or indication of policy. I do not have a smartphone so I did not get any of these messages.
I was then offered over the phone as consolation seats at the bar with stools (with no backs). I am a senior so this is not ideal but I took it grudgingly.
Before I left I checked my email & saw that "after" my phone call with the hostess I got an email that my reservation was cancelled. This was disconcerting but I went anyways since I just spoke to the hostess.
When I got to Beba the hostess was not welcoming & certainly she gave me no apologies. In fact this hostess looked over at me several times during the evening with indifference or as if she was looking at a wall. When I saw there were tables available inside & out she said they were taken. So I guess I can be bumped but others can't.
I didn't enjoy sitting at the bar. The other servers spent their time behind the bar talking amongst themselves while one of them (hopefully the Sommelier) constantly drank wine. It was annoying to watch. Only the bartender Evan made an effort to engage.
As for the food the empanada was good & sweetbread also. I found the salad to be overly acidic which is not pleasant.
The sweetbread dish had a fair bit of sauce & this same hostess to add insult to injury offered me bread after I completed the whole dish. Too little too late...
It was so noisy in this tiny restaurant that I didn't have the strength or energy to shout out my complaints although I am pretty sure if I tried with this hostess it would have fallen on deaf ears.
When we were leaving my friend went to the washroom i sat outside at an empty table to wait (yes there were still empty tables) & various waitresses came out & stared at me. I had just been in this tiny restaurant for a couple of hours & paid my bill but I still got looks then they brought out the hostess to have a look at me too! That was unbelievable.
Bumping customers on the day of their reservation is not a good way to run a business. By doing this it feels like you are showing preference for certain customers over others. This is not fair & also insulting.
Beba owners should take some lessons from Mon Lapin on how to treat customers without prejudice or disdain & certainly with respect. Every single person I encountered at Mon Lapin (& there were about 5) was attentive; courteous; friendly & focused on making us happy from beginning to end. They treated every customer as if they were wanted. Most importantly they didn't unexpectedly & unfairly cancel our reservation.
The hostess in particular being snooty; rude & unfair reflects on the owners; the team as a whole & the reputation of the restaurant itself.
I read a few other reviewers who had a similar experience to mine. So in the era of being "woke" to prejudice whether it be race; age or class I just want to say if you have a feeling you are not being treated well at Beba you are right to feel this way & you are not alone.View more
Absolutely incredible meal at the bar! Great cocktails, unique wine list, & of course, the memorable food. The empanadas & knish were great, but the lamb ribs stole the show. Would return next time I’m in Montréal!View more
