The menu shines with seafood offerings like grilled octopus, turbo fish, sardines and cod croquettes, plus a flavorful seafood rice, all described as delicious and well prepared, and the house wine adds to the enjoyable dining experience. The ambiance blends charming decor with Portuguese music, quiet enough for conversation, and the location turns a visit into a memorable occasion whether for a casual night out or a special gathering; the service is consistently praised and patrons often say they will return.
Porto Mar is a true Old Montreal classic - an upscale yet cozy Portuguese seafood restaurant that has been around for over 20 years, & it still delivers the same quality & authenticity it's known for. It's the perfect spot for family dinners, after?work meals, or bringing someone you want to impress.
The atmosphere is warm & elegant, & the menu is a seafood lover's dream. They offer a vast selection of fresh options, including several catch?of?the?day dishes that highlight just how high?quality their ingredients are. The food has that refined, comforting feel that makes you instantly understand why this place has lasted so long.
The fish & seafood rice was exactly as I remembered it from years ago - rich, flavorful, & reminiscent of true homemade Portuguese cooking. Others at the table ordered the sardines, which were big, bold, & full of flavor, exactly the way proper Portuguese sardines should be.
We chose the table d'hôte, which is absolutely worth it. For just a little more, you get an appetizer & dessert. The chorizo & cod croquettes were delicious, & the desserts were a perfect finish. The lemon mousse surprised everyone - even someone who normally avoids lemon loved it - & the chocolate mousse was rich & satisfying.
They also offer a signature cocktail menu, adding a classy touch to the whole experience.
Overall, Porto Mar is a hidden gem in the Old Port that continues to impress after all these years. Authentic cuisine, fresh seafood, warm service, & a timeless atmosphere. I would 100% come back.

We had an amazing experience at Porto Mar. The the fish & rice dish felt like real home cooking & sardines were super flavorful (in the best, authentic way). We had a starter of chorizo was also a standout.
The table d'hôte is definitely worth it. For just a few dollars more you get a starter, a generous main meal, & dessert.
We tried the chocolate mousse & frozen lemon dessert (highly recommended). It was the perfect finish!
For a spot in Old Montreal, the prices are very fair, portions are big, & the atmosphere is relaxed-great for a date night or just a nice meal out.
The atmosphere is relaxed & inviting, making it a great spot for a date night, tourists exploring Old Montreal, or really anyone who loves Portuguese food, whether it's seafood or meat. The service was fantastic, & we even had the chance to meet the owners, who were some of the kindest & most welcoming people you could hope to meet.
We highly recommend this place! It's a gem.

5 little grilled shrimp around a stack of rice for $34 bucks, eh. The balsamic snails were good, but the grilled sardines were a little fishy & we left hungry. Nice ambiance & service though. From what I hear, family owned.
Buona alternativa ai posti canadesi, sempre difficili da inquadrare. Qui si bada alla sostanza e c'è anche una buona qualità. Menzione d'onore per le sardine grigliate, ed il merluzzo impanato.
We had a wonderful meal at Porto Mar! We got the lunch special which came with a choice of soup or salad. The entree was hearty (grilled chicken, vegetables & fries). It came with dessert. My husband enjoys the grilled sardines & my son got the beef sandwich with fries.

Beau restaurant.
So delicious. Especially sardines!! & steak was really good. Lemon sorbe is awesome. We loved this place. We will come again when we visit Montreal again.
I have tried a variety of dishes: calamari, shrimps, & grilled sardines. The sardines weren't fresh enough unfortunately. Which is a risk to take & I was informed that they do not arrive frozen. Small fish is hard to store fresh & taste good only of served on the first 2-3 days after caught. So this one is on me. Calamari was a bit rubbery too. I do need to speak highly of the service though: polite, attentive, & friendly.

Service was friendly. Decor was clean but unexceptional. Calamari was luke warm, bland & limited. Grilled sardines were very good. Cod was good but unexciting. White house wine was quite acceptable. The risk of having $20 charged per person in the event of not showing for a reservation was a bit intimidating & didn't seem to be the norm with the Montreal restaurants. It was also a bit surprising as on Saturday night there were still a log of tables not occupied.
We were three couples dining. The grilled chorizo, Portuguese soup & sardines starters were fabulous, The main courses were grilled chicken with a Piri seasoning, pork cutlets, & red sea bass were all very good. We were pleasantly surprised with the quality of the food. The servers were excellent. We will definitely return!
Decouverte superbe! Les sardines sont excellent en fait tout l'était! Mise à part le parking difficile a trouver & ou tres cher le resto vaut le détour! Nous avons pris le plat à partagé & cetait parfait !!! Service tres agréable aussj 😀

We've dined at Porto Mar twice while visiting our daughter in Montreal. Each time we were treated to outstanding service in a beautiful welcoming old world restaurant. We like to relax during dinner & go slow. We were not disappointed. The food was delicious ,my husband loved his sardines. The option of ordering a complete meal is unusual these days. This has become a special place for us!
I really like Porto Mar, especially for the grilled chicken. It is among the best in Montreal & does not come drowned in a sauce that most other restaurants use. The service is excellent & the salads are also. I had grilled sardines as an appetizer & while they were quite good, the one thing I did not like is that they arrived with their heads on. I'd come back here often as I really like the food & ambiance.
Friendly staff, nice atmosphere. We felt that the cooking was inconsistent since half of our meal was excellent (chorizo & catch of the day) but the other half was not good (sardines & salmon).
Highly recommend this restaurant, we booked because the places in the old town seemed very busy but Porto Mar was a haven of good food & excellent service. We had the set menus, lots of choice we chose fish... sardines, cod & creme brûlee to finish, all delicious & good value
