Review Summary

Pho Bang New York is widely regarded as a go-to pho spot in Montreal's Chinatown, a busy no-frills place where large portions and quick service keep the lines moving and the value high. The broth is often described as flavorful and comforting and the beef tender, though a few visits note lighter broth or less spice depending on the day. Cash is the only payment method, with an ATM inside and occasional currency exchange quirks. Experiences with service vary, with many customers praising fast, friendly service and others recounting rude staff or language barriers. Overall, the reviews point to a dependable, crowd-pleasing bowl of pho that draws regulars and newcomers alike, a staple for those seeking authentic Vietnamese in the city.

I used to come here often. In fact, Pho Bang New York (not in New York) was the one that first taught me to appreciate this Americanized northern Vietnam dish more than three decades ago even though there were many pho places in town. The first day when I revisited Montreal recently, I brought my grown daughter to Pho Bang New York. We returned to this place several times during our short stay.

Their noodles are less bouncy than I prefer. But their meat cuts are superb, & their soup has a different emphasis from what I often get now. After all these years, they still keep their prices low, although they seem to have adjusted portions somewhat understandably due to inflation. Surprisingly, they now have a weekend special with ox tail soup. That soup has hot spices, & they offer a special hot sauce. You don't want to miss it if you visit on Friday, Saturday, or Sunday!

I still remember the weekend evenings when diners quietly - nay, loudly wait to enter near the small doorway at the plain-looking storefront. Today, people do the same. Their interior used be plain, too. But now, they have quite a bit of decors that look loud but do not necessarily go together. General atmosphere here is cozy. Staff speak fluent French & English - many speak Vietnamese, too.

Space is tight in this restaurant. So, expect some inconvenience if you visit during winter. (They now have a coat rack in the back although not many people notice that.) & prepare to pay cash. (How do you suppose they can keep price so low?)

A rare restaurant where taxes are actually included in the prices. It's honest & transparent - I love that. The pho is also great & free tea is served at the table. The prices are quite a bit higher now than that were a few years ago though - gone are the days of getting a meal here for $10. It's more around $15-$20 today.

One of the Best Ph? Experiences in Montreal Chinatown

Pho Bang New York never disappoints. I ordered the ph? ??c bi?t (large), & it was outstanding from the first sip to the last bite.

The broth is crystal clear, deeply aromatic, & perfectly balanced-rich without being heavy. The bowl was generously loaded with a variety of tender beef cuts, silky rice noodles, & topped with fresh onions, cilantro, & green onions. Everything tasted fresh, authentic, & prepared with care. The large size is truly satisfying & great value for the price.

Served piping hot with a fresh plate of basil & bean sprouts, the ph? arrived quickly despite the restaurant being busy. Service was efficient & professional, exactly what you want when you're craving real Vietnamese comfort food.

If you're in Montreal's Chinatown & want authentic, no-frills, high-quality ph?, this is the place. The ph? ??c bi?t l?n here is a must-order.

Highly recommended.

I was really disappointed with my experience here. The staff were rude & unprofessional, & the food was totally overrated for the price. On top of that, they only accept cash, which is very inconvenient. Definitely not coming back.

We got into town late & went here because it was close to our hotel. They were busy so we decided to get an order to go. The wait staff took our order & it was ready in less than 10 minutes. The food was great. They only take cash. They do accept US dollars & even give you the going exchange rate. Prices were reasonable.

The food was super super delicious & healthy & light. Loved everything about the place. The coziness, the cleanliness, the deliciousness & the prices. Just make sure you have your money on you because they only take cash. Would definitely go back soon!

Food tastes good & fairly authentic, but portions are small for the price.

Service gets overwhelmed.

Walked in, held up fingers for how many in our party, & we were seated right away. Tables are two-tops pushed together depending on group size-efficient, no-nonsense setup.

The beef in the pho was excellent-tender, well-cooked-but the broth was forgettable. Not bad, just didn't stand out. My son's chicken & rice plate was clean & filling, but so neutral it could've come from half a dozen different places. No standout seasoning, no distinct flavor.

Cash only, but they did take U.S. dollars & even gave a small discount-so that was a pleasant surprise.

Fast service, decent prices, no big complaints-but nothing special either. If you're nearby & hungry, it'll do. But if you're chasing top-tier pho in Montréal, this isn't the destination.

Great pho, great price, good portions, fast service. Only reason it didn't receive 5 stars was because there was nothing extraordinarily unforgettable about the place, &, they only took cash which made things a bit annoying. Bottom line, great pho place, would come again without hesitation.

I have been coming here since they used to be a smaller spot a few doors away on the corner of St Laurent & Viger. The food hasn't changed. It's still delicious, fresh, & really well priced. It may be busy, & you may have to wait in line, but it's always reasuring to eat in a place with constant turnover. If you are in Chinatown in Montreal, you have to eat at the Schwartz's of Pho.

This is clearly a'favourite' spot for many Montrealers & the whole restaurant has made fast service of good Vietnamese food a science. Menus are extensively illustrated with numbered item, staff manages to be efficient without being rude, & food is delivered rapidly & not only looks appetizing but tastes good.

Prices are quite decent & while the place can get crowded & noisy, you still get a good table experience.

So far, the best Vietnamese food I had in Montreal! Their noodle grilled chicken 🍲 soup is 👌 👍. Their grilled beef + chicken +rice is a MUST try 🤪. Give it a try 👌.
Prices are fairly well.
All in all: Quality 👍, price 👍.
This is my spot & will be in my monthly to go list!

Just keep in mind: no credit card, no debit, only Cash!

Stopped by on a road trip to Montreal, felt like a popular spot in Chinatown. The service was friendly enough, I realize they were busy for dinner.

We got the chicken & minced pork vermicelli, chicken tonkinese soup/pho, & vegetable vermicelli. The portions & prices were reasonable. The pho broth was flavourful & rich!

Will definitely be coming back!

I love this Pho place. The price is right, the portions are big & the service is one of the fastest in town. The pho is delicious & the spicy weekend special pho is even better. I almost never have to wait for a table. One of the best spots in Chinatown imo. They have been accommodating of my food restrictions, which I appreciate a lot.

Please note they only take cash but they have an ATM next to the area where you go to pay.

This restaurant is very accessible to downtown as it is in... well, downtown Montreal. The service between the waiters & my family were superb, & the wait time varied between 6 minutes to 9 minutes. The food overall tasted amazing, not too heavy on the salt, & not too dull of a taste. The Vietnamese tang is inside the dishes, & prepared with a Western taste as well. The price for the dishes were overall fair (average of 17 dollars per dish), & there is a working bathroom.

If you're from Montreal, you know this is one of the top three pho spots-I'm talking about the broth, which is the most important part of a good pho.

They serve big portions for the price, & the food is fresh & flavorful. Just a heads-up: if you go during rush hour, expect a long lineup. But overall, the place is clean, service is fast, & the pho is definitely worth it

Went to the first Pho Bang in NYC which has been open for decades now. Now it's expanding to Montreal. Quality has decreased slightly but overall good. Priced has increased quite a bit.
