Modavie is a timeless place that brings us back to our roots, where ladies & gents gather and eat in a lively atmosphere caused by great conversation, live music and the wooden scents of a vintage room. Born in 1997, it quickly became popular among locals & visitors, and is now considered a Montreal institution.
Treat yourself to refined French fare in an antique & dimmed corner locale spawning two floors. From the classic beef tartare, to tasty sweetbread, to the famous ratatouille, your cravings will be easily satiated.
Reviews describe Modavie as a warm, lively Old Montreal bistro with a welcoming vibe and memorable live jazz that enhances the evening. The menu is praised for classic French bistro dishes like mussels and fries, duck confit, lamb chops, steak frites, and seafood, with generous portions and fresh ingredients. Attentive, friendly service and a knowledgeable staff are repeatedly highlighted, helping guests feel cared for in a vibrant setting enhanced by a diverse wine list and craft cocktails. Overall, the atmosphere, food, and music combine to create enjoyable dinners for dates, friends, and celebrations, making Modavie a reliable choice in Montreal.
We throughly enjoyed our experience at Modavie. Duck confit was to die for, also the mushroom risotto was great. The real show stopper was service. Our server Rad, was outstanding. Made us feel like family. Highly recommend to anyone in the area!

My girlfriend & I walked past Modavie & saw the menu outside & we were impressed. Buddy our server was very professional & attentive. He gave us a nice description of all the special items. We ordered the Snails & scallops to start & they were delicious. For the second course, we got Duck Confit & the Lamb rack & it was top tier. The cocktail Red Velvet is highly recommended. There was live music. Felt very romantic. If I ever get to go back to Montreal, I will be visiting Modavie every time I am in town. The pre fix menu is also good if you want to try different items on the menu.
We recently dined at Modavie & had an unforgettable experience. The lamb shank was absolutely amazing-tender, flavorful, & cooked to perfection. Our server, Alvin, went above & beyond to accommodate a gluten allergy, ensuring a safe & enjoyable meal. His attentiveness & support truly enhanced our dining experience. The atmosphere at Modavie is warm & inviting, with the added charm of live music that set the perfect tone for the evening. We felt welcomed & relaxed throughout our visit. Highly recommend Modavie for anyone looking for a delightful dining experience in Montreal!
My husband & I came here on the recommendation of our walking tour guide & we're so glad we did! I had the salad niçoise & my husband had the onion soup & a small Caesar salad. All our food was delicious - do NOT come here & skip the onion soup. It's unbelievable. The bread & butter they served before the meal was also fantastic. Highly recommend!
Made reservations for Friday night & was totally worth it. The live music was amazing & a nice add to the vibe without being too much. The staff were extremely friendly & great. The food was classic French bistro. Got the escargot, sweet bread, & beef tartare & all were excellent. They've always got a seasonal pasta, fish & butcher cut for some variety. Highly recommend coming with a reservation to catch the live music & food. Definitely a very cute date spot.

French restaurant. Server claims lamb is their specialty so I ordered the lamb chops & told the server I would have them however the chef recommends. I was with a big group & the lamb, while cooked medium, was room temperature. Tender, well seasoned. Service was good. Live jazz music was great. Would go back.
I do not recommend coming to this restaurant because it was a huge disappointment for us. We had a reso but the restaurant was not busy at all, with many empty tables inside. Our server greeted us & we placed both a drink & food order. My mom got her coffee right away but I think the server forgot my wine. I sat & waited for 30 minutes before I got impatient & tried to flag the server down. When we finally got our food, which also took a really long time, it was mediocre. We ordered the mussels & fries & when the guy who delivered it opened the cover of the bowl, a mussel fell onto my mom's foot. The fries were also cold & soggy. The grilled octopus was okay. It was also cold & for the price I thought it would be a bigger portion. In total we spent over $100 cdn & it was not worth the money to me.
My friends & I were celebrating my friend's Bachelor Party/Trip on labour day weekend in Montreal, & I insisted that we get authentic French cuisine seeing as how we came all the way from Toronto. Modavie exceeded every expectation everyone had. The Atmosphere was very pleasing, with low noise volumes that I found quite nice as loud environments tend to make me uncomfortable, along with the decor & lighting being very well done. The service by Quentin was absolutely exceptional, making us feel quite at home & being attentive to our needs. He suggested another establishment for an evening drink as our reservation ended & the resturaunt was full & we found our way there based on his description. The food itself was absolutely out of this dimension. Never before have I tasted anything as refined as the bone marrow, garlic snails & duck confit. The flavors of each dish were lovingly curated like a selection of the finest paintings at the Louvre. The creme brulee was the perfect dessert to finish with, with its thick, stain glass worthy shell & it's decadent, eye widening pudding. I will recommend this establishment to everyone I know is going to Montreal, & bragging about it to everyone else. Merci beaucoup, Modavie!

Amazing experience! We had a great time with a party of 6. Most of us had a dish with lamb, as we were told it was their specialty, & they certainly delivered! Several of us usually don't even like lamb, but Modavie converted us. Our waitress, Eman (sp?) was so lovely & made the night so enjoyable, giving us details about the wine we ordered & just being so personable & kind. We were in a room next to where the band was playing so the noise level was perfect. I would recommend asking for a table outside of the room the band is playing in if you are hoping for conversation because you can still hear, just not as loudly. It was so enjoyable to listen to!
I won't lie, when we walked in with two toddlers we got the look from the host. (Parents know the look.) So I was leery. But we were there by 4:15 so it felt like an ok time to bring them in. & things turned around quickly when we got a table & food. I can honestly say the best (mushroom) risotto I've ever had. Salmon tartare & cheese tray were a hit for the whole family, including the one year old. & appreciated the effort put into the mocktaiks. Really fun. The lamb - which the waitress said they were known for - was probably our least favorite item. That's not to say it wasn't good. But i think we should have sent it back to get it to medium. Rare was...just too rare. One other fun note - the music playlist. This isn't something I really ever notice but we kept commenting how great it was & it set the right vibe. Definitely would recommend this place if you're looking for an elevated meal in old Montreal.
The food was AMAZING, as were the vibes. The live music was great, & not too loud. I had the lamb cavatelli which I can't recommend highly enough. Truly enjoyed my time there!
I had the pleasure of dining at this delightful establishment this summer. I commenced my meal with a delectable beef tartare appetizer, followed by a succulent lamb main course. The ambiance was further enhanced by the presence of a live jazz band. I highly recommend this establishment to anyone seeking an exceptional dining experience.

Good evening. My name is Olena & I would like to express my deepest gratitude to Tyler, who patiently waited for our order as my friends were looking for parking on a very busy evening. He was very pleasant to talk to & it also turned out that he was from the neighboring town from which we came. It was very nice to meet him. I would also like to pay special attention to the food, as it was simply amazing. The dishes were prepared & served very quickly, everything was tasty & satisfying. I was very pleased to get into this restaurant as a guest! I highly recommend this establishment, it is just a godsend.
Classic French cuisine with a wonderful atmosphere. The staff is extremely professional & will happily guide you through the menu. We started with the escargot & moved on to the poutine with braised lamb & duck confit for our main course. Highly recommend all 3! There was live music & overall a great atmosphere.
Reservation highly recommended. It's a popular restaurant in Montreal old town & they have live music every night. However we were a little disappointed to find that it was not jazz/blues music on the day of our visit. Food is not tasty but portions are large. Northing to complain nor be impressed.
We booked a last minute reservation, & were very glad we did. There was lovely live music in the next room. The atmosphere was festive, with nice moody lighting, a gorgeous old building & great bistro-type decor. There are hundreds of wine choices & the server was knowledgable about all the wines we asked about. I had the risotto, & my husband had an off-menu steak. We had tuna tartare as an appetizer. We were so impressed with the service (see the photo of him posing) & the food, & with the beautiful ambiance. Highly recommended!
