Review Summary

Diners describe Chez Jean Paul as a tiny, intimate setting where a tasting menu with wine pairings leads to a refined, inventive dining experience. Staff are praised for attentiveness and knowledge, with a sommelier guiding pairings and explanations that elevate many courses, even as a few nights are noted for slower service and a dessert structure that can feel confusing. The ambience is warm and relaxed with a subtle jazz backdrop, though some visits are described as noisy due to the room size and ceiling height. Dishes and presentations receive frequent applause for freshness, balance and texture, with standout items such as sea urchin, abats, crispy char skin, and elegant desserts mentioned. Value is seen by many as strong for the quality, while others note the price level is high and the size of the dining room can limit seats. Overall, Chez Jean Paul is regarded as a must try for adventurous eaters in Montreal, a small kitchen delivering a memorable culinary journey.

Possibly my biggest disappointment of the year in Montreal. I honestly do not understand the other reviews.

First, the restaurant is very far from downtown - at least a 30-minute drive, & frankly it's not worth the trip. Out of five dishes, we only liked two. Two were such a huge disappointment that we couldn't even finish them, including dessert - something that never happens to us.

The service was also extremely slow. Finally, the restaurant is extremely noisy, This is especially surprising given the very high ceilings. Clearly, no investment was made in proper acoustics.

We have ordered a set manual including 7 courses at a cost of 100 dollars per person. The food were great. The appetizers were sea urchin, the beans, the razor clams, duck heart with foie gra, main dishes were the arctic cha & sweetbreads, then a dessert . All the foods were fresh & tasty, accompanying side dishes were great , the sauce can bring out the flavour of the food without covering it. The Arctic cha got a crispy skin & tender meat texture. The sea urchin got a very sweet taste due to the chicken broth. The bread accompanying the duck heart was just baked before serving & it was fuming when we ate it . The bean was crunchy. The razor clam was a bit small in portions. The sweetbread was very tender & juicy & unlike other restaurants which just deep fried it . The weakest dish was the dessert , it was a deep fried bread with chocolate inside accompanying by some plum bits. It could be further improved but I accepted it . In all I tried more than ten restaurants in Quebec city & Montreal in the past seven days, Chez Jean Paul was the best. Not to mention the waitress was very nice introducing us all the different dishes with candid recommendations. Also, they changed plates & utensils for every dishes which other restaurants lacking. I would return to try again & also making recommendations to my friends.

10/10 food, drink parings, experience

For such a small team the quality being sent out is impressive. The dishes are fun, balanced, & well thought out. All the wine pairings complemented the dish in their own way while still standing out alone. Service went smoothly.

The only criticism is that I wish the dessert menu was more robust. There were good fresh & palate cleansing dishes but for me, it was missing something more rich or decadent to end the meal.

It was an absolute pleasure to dine here & I can't wait to be back & see what new things the team does.

What a truly great restaurant. I tried it at a friend's recommendation; or else I would have not known about it, which is such a shame, more food lovers should know of this place. - Easy to book (not the 2 month waiting list other known restaurants have) - Such simple but yet tasteful decor, the big windows make a difference - Good service, on point, attentionate, not over the top either - Absolutely delicious dishes: sea urchin mousse & chicken bouillon, eggplant caviar, duck heart with griottes & radish, ris de veau, couteaux - We took the entire service of 7-9 dishes, & I can tell we the portions are quite generous. I was happy & full at the end. & I do have to highlight this because having been to Mastard only a month earlier, where I ate the same number of dishes & I was still hungry at the end, dish size is important Thank you!!! We will be back. I wish you the best.
